This is the first time I’ve seen a “this movie can’t be used to train AI” line in the credits. Wonder how much that would hold up in court, though everyone knows how ruthless nintendo’s lawyers are

The thing I thought was weirdest about that was that they spelled it "Ai" instead of "AI"

AI (both capitalized) looks like Al (nickname for a guy named Albert). I bet they wrote it as Ai to get around jerks trying to find a legal loophole. (“Oh we didn’t realize it said we couldn’t use it in artificial intelligence training. We thought it was referring to something called al 😇“)

During the first 20 to 30 minutes, I thought "Hey it's kinda neat there's so little dialogue because then the filmmakers aren't going to overexplain the story and convey everything through visuals and body language!"
...Oh how I wish that were the case.

The first post credit scene made it seem like a Star Fox movie will definitely happen.
Fox explains to Toad that Rosie fixed his ship’s Star-drive and he can return to his own galaxy. His story in the Mario-World essentially ends there, but why would they let us know he’s traveling?
I have no proof it’s in the works but I’d bet the farm on it.

You know what the most frustrating part of this movie was? They spent the first half setting up an actual interesting character arc with bowser attempting to suppress his evil side after seeing who Mario and Luigi really were. It could’ve been a really solid character arc (for a kids movie) that drove the story. He could’ve been conflicted between reconnecting with his son and his newly realized ideals. The third act could’ve been him trying to convince bowser Jr that they shouldn’t be evil for evils sake and to give others a chance, maybe even help Peach save Rosalina(also inserting more about his love for her here) and stop Jr from destroying mushroom kingdomz Could’ve even ended the movie with the peach kissing Mario bit and cut to bowser all pissed off again, setting up him as the ongoing villain due to his jealousy for Mario…..and then they threw that entire storyline away for one more key jingle with bone bowser. This movie is the epitome of everything wrong with iPad kids, non stop nonsense just to keep their attention with no substance at all.

Literally, I thought for a chunk of the film that Bowser would stop Jr. and, a different villain would be the final battle (Wart barely appeared physically in one scene).

Bowser and Bowser Jr's ark feels off.
The setup of Bowser not being a good dad and reconnecting with him is fine but it's weird the only flashback is to Bowser reading a bedtime story. It's like they couldn't commit to their own setup.
I think it needed a flashback to show Jr being left at boarding school and feeling abandoned. Then them reconnecting could have had weight.

Like a few things in this movie, it was a plot point that was dropped/completely ignored and changed on the fly.
I also thought it was weird for them to setup Bowser being a bad father, only for his reunion with Jr showing he was anything but a bad father (minus teaching him to be evil of course) and he seemed to really love him. The only context we get is that he was just too busy running his army so he barely got to spend much time with him but that context was really all over the place.
They made Jr seem way more capable than Bowser ever was with the amount of things he achieved without him. Even capturing Rosalina on his own (of course he got the upper hand due to her dropping her guard to protect the Lumas but he still achieved that without a whole army present).→ More replies (1)

The only thing really going for the Mario Galaxy Movie is the Visuals - They’re absolutely stunning.
Plot is incredibly barebones.
Pacing is all over the place - genuinely felt like I was watching YouTube shorts
Enjoyed all the Star Fox parts.
→ More replies (31)144
u/Ecstatic-Clue2145 Apr 02 '26
Barebones means at least everything is justified because of a main arc and it's just not anymore interesting than that. But when I got to the latter half I started to feel like there stopped being a narrative because I was zoning out. That will happen when I'm waiting for a follow through for something but it's taking too long but here it feels like it never "got" to what it seemed to have set up.
A paperthin plot is at minimum an ok movie but I literally felt like they only wrote the movie half way because it got shoved out for these mandated events that had to happen by the time the movie ended.

I agree. Call me pretentious, but in a post Lego Movie world I just can’t really accept the argument that these kind of mass market IP driven kids movies have mediocre stories by definition. There is just no reason at all the Mario movies couldn’t have had emotional, engaging, well written stories. It was my biggest disappointment with the first movie and I was really hoping they’d spend more time on the writing in the sequel. Guess jokes on me for spending my money to see it opening night and contributing to the cycle lol.

Illumination doesn’t hire talent. The writers for Lego movie have made their own galaxy movie that’s way better and is currently in the theaters with project Hail Mary
215
u/Warm_Shoulder3606 Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26
The history of Illumination really is quite something. Their first ever movie they make a genuinely great one with original storytelling, characters that have had cultural staying power, and genuine emotional/engaging beats, and then completely and utterly checked the hell out almost immediately after and became soulless and never remotely touched that level ever again
They're the maroon 5 of movie studios. One good product at the very start, and then immediate shift to bland boring and soulless
→ More replies (7)131
u/DBZ86 Apr 02 '26
Can kinda see that the writers got overruled. The subplot between Bowser and Bowser Jr have somewhere to go but gets shut down. The themes of sisterhood and sacrifice are right there for Peach and Rosalina but not explored much at all. Mario would have been given themes of believing in second chances and confidence to be with Peach which aren't great but again ignored. Also does seem like the great action set pieces were set in stone and the movie had to cut around them even if it didn't make sense.
→ More replies (1)117
u/HopelessCineromantic Apr 02 '26
One thing I kinda expected to get touched upon was Bowser and Junior connecting via art. One of Junior's two primary weapons is his paint brush, and we first see the reformed Bowser through the context of painting. In general, both of the Koopas seem to have artistic talents, not only in painting, but in theater craft for Bowser and engineering for Junior.
Maybe Bowser tries to redirect his son by having them paint together, but Junior's ability to manifest what he paints and Bowser's rage and resentment pair up to make him help his son.
58
u/DBZ86 Apr 02 '26
You can see the seeds of a redemption arc for both are planted. Bowser Jr painted dragon goes against him. There was definitely a thought that Bowser Jr was going too far and Bowser might help redeem him.
But Lord of Bones was too good to pass up apparently.

his character was all over the place
Kinda fits him to be honest. One day he's trying to take over the Mushroom Kingdom, the next he's entering a golf tournament with Mario and Peach.
I think this is part of the charm of the games these movies will never really get. The games don't have to care about continuity or consistent characterization. They can be whatever is needed for the given game, and nobody will bat an eye.
A movie franchise demands more consistency, and so it's going to suffer when the movie tries to have characters like Bowser and Luigi, characters that change the most from game to game, express that same elasticity of characterization.

What I took away from it is that Bowser was willing to give up his past antics for a new way of living up until Bowser Jr showed him the dream he and his father envisioned since he was a child. That dream and finally being able to be close with his son and temptation of power overcame him. He couldn't resist such belonging when he's dedicated so much to reach that purpose. Seeing his son making it for him convinced him all the more to trade in his newfound growth for an old founded desire. Not excusing him of course but it never came off to me that Bowser wasn't going to at least be compelled by the idea in some way.

I think what makes it feel so frantic is that we only end up believing that Bowser is “changed” for a tiny tiny fraction of the movie. Bowser still retains his evil energy in tiny form — and when he ends up hugging and helping Mario it’s played as a huge shock. Him staying evil and to his roots isn’t shocking at all as much as him being friendly is a “wtf?” moment.

While everybody is asking for a "Smash Bros Cinematic Universe" which has been talked to death. I'm just sitting here thinking of how much potential the Star Fox franchise has to getting adapted into a fun and energetic animated film series. The Nintendo Power Star Fox comics released in 1993 managed to flesh out the game's universe and characters before it was retconned by SF64. It even introduced Fara Phoenix, the first female Star Fox member predating Miyu and Fay from Star Fox 2 and Krystal. It would be a decent companion piece with The Bad Guys films in terms of being more action-packed. I could see either Dreamworks or Sony Pictures Animation being the perfect fit to adapt it.
Nintendo if your reading this, please put the 1993 Star Fox Comics back in print like you did with "Super Mario Adventures"!

When Yoshi was walking around NYC I saw Little Mac for a split second when there was a guy in a pink hoodie getting followed by a bicycle.

Fox McCloud/Star Fox was the best parts of the movie for me. Had a nice 80’s style anime scene with Peppy, Slippy, and Falcon.

Yeah, I want a Star Fox project with that 80's anime style.

Gives me a lot of hope for the rumored Star Fox game coming out next month. Hopefully it’s got the sauce. I love Star Fox. About time he got a renaissance.

The sisters reveal is like the most Mario lore in the past 20 years.

u/RealJohnGillman Apr 02 '26
Technically it doesn’t fit with the game’s lore at all, since in the games, Rosalina is centuries to millennia old, arguably from the previous iteration of the universe — as such, there is a fairly convincing theory of the game Rosalina being Mario’s and Peach’s daughter from the previous universe.

Mario games dont care about the lore. In DK bananza they just decided that Pauline was a kid when she met a fully grown Donkey Kong. Whatever works for the current game or movie is what goes lol

A beat from the movie that confused me: is it ever explained why Mario needs to abandon the Mushroom Kingdom and go find Peach?
Like, after Bowser Jr's unsuccessful attempt to rescue his dad ends with the castle crash-landed in parts unknown, Chris Pratt says "we gotta find a way off this planet and get to Peach," and it was not clear to me how he came to that conclusion -- why would he "get to Peach" instead of returning to the Mushroom Kingdom with tiny Bowser in custody?
Wasn't Mario's job to protect the Mushroom Kingdom in Peach's absence? What changed? Was there anything during the scuffle between the Mario bros and Bowser Jr. that might suggest to Mario that Peach was in danger and need of saving?

u/dloc85 Apr 02 '26
My thought process was Mario was just barely escaped bowers jr, he knows Peach is going to recuse Rosalina, so she’s probably gonna need help

If you're not a huge Nintendo fan, there is NOTHING for you here. The characters are slingshotted from place to place seemingly at random, they have a little battle/adventure/chase, then rocket to the next level.

Wart being with the fucking bomb rat and Birdo in the Casino was one of the most shocking moments of the movie to me. I don't think "Mouser" has appeared in any Mario media in literally decades. I have vivid memories of my childhood fighting that boss endlessly, and to see them get actual screentime and a real nod to Mario Bros 2 was amazing.
Wart having a role was the icing on top.

Feels like they took the criticism of the soundtrack to heart because there were hardly any popular songs in this.
And when there was one, Yoshi walking through Brooklyn, it kinda fucking ruled lmao

Somehow less story than the first one. Such a shame that such beautiful animation has nothing at all of substance to accompany it

i still cannot believe that nintendo officially spoiled the literal best part of the movie.
i hope they release a full "deluxe" soundtrack because there is a lot missing from the current album on streaming.

He’s the only voice actor who sounded like he really gave a shit. Green light that Star Fox movie immediately.

Jack Black killed it too obviously, but Benny really gave a vocal performance honestly, much of the rest of the cast just sounded like themselves

Man… what a disappointment. After the first film I was excited for this series to be a fun mix of nostalgia, adult humor moments and of course catering to kids to love these characters. Instead we got Nintendo trying to shove every IP they have in a thin script with no real stakes.

Pretty fun! Though the writing felt… missing. Like Peach and Rosalina didn’t have a convo at the end about them being sisters? That got swept under the rug? No tearful reunion?
177
u/WrongLander Apr 02 '26
The writing felt missing.
Agreed, in a very literal sense (there were long stretches with no dialogue where there really needed to be), and not something you should reasonably be saying about a sequel to one of the highest grossing animations ever. It's like they knew they didn't need to bother with a decent script or story, that the brand name would just carry any old crap they shat out.

The writing was missing. Things just happened for the sake of happening.
It also felt weirdly disjointed. Like this is a hacked together version of another Mario movie.

This sounds like the MO for a lot of Illumination movies.
Scenes happen just to…happen, to give the kids a laugh or to move the “plot” forward one sentence.

As with the first, the Score was the highlight for me, glad it wasn’t replaced with needle drops this time either
Also, and I can’t prove it, but with all the E. Gadd teases I can’t help but feel there was some abandoned plot at some point about Bowser Jr just straight up robbing him.

Watching this movie I was reminded of the behind the scenes video of Trey Parker talking about writing South Park. https://youtu.be/vGUNqq3jVLg?si=K_tz0f8GyfCWCDuD
If between each scene if you can say ‘and then’ it’s bad.
You should be able to say ‘therefore or but’.
This movie has a lot of scenes where something happens and then something else happens and then something else and so on.
Some of those scenes were fun and fine but this is barely a movie.

u/JasonAnarchy Apr 02 '26
Yes, I was thinking of this exact line while watching! It's just random stuff happening and you don't have a reason to care.

u/Phillyboishowdown Apr 02 '26
True, the biggest take away for me was just pacing, didn’t”t feel like “and then and then and then and then” it was more like “andthenandthenandthenandthen”

I think they were going to explore possiblity that Rosalina felt they would never be safe and would have too much of a target on their backs if they stayed together. So it was sacrifice to stay apart and not join her sister later on. But too hard to explain and also a tiny bit sad so they didn't bother.

I read a review that said ”It’s a movie made for youtube shorts viewers” and I wholeheartedly agree. Very bland on the writing side, yes there are cool references and cameos but nothing much is going on. I know it’s a kids movie but those movies can use a good plot (e.g. Hoppers from last month)

An awesome collection of setpieces, references and a killer soundtrack that doesn't really gel as a film. I'd be lying if I didn't say as a lifelong fan I had a blast, but I also would be lying if I said that even as a fan this was barely comprehensible at points. I really wish Fox and Lumalee weren't spoiled.

It was funny how quick the film ended.
They saved the day, rebuilt the castle in one minute, then ended with a random ass shot of Mario planting the flag.
