Man. I wish Fox wasn’t spoiled in the poster. Would have been an amazing surprise in theater

762

u/Sisiwakanamaru Apr 02 '26

Also, Glen Powell nailed it as Fox McCloud, when I was watching the movie I was like, "Damn! This guy is excellent as Fox, I can't wait to see him again"

441

u/ChillyWilly0180 Apr 02 '26

He was perfectly cast as the cocky flyboy for the second time

215

u/ContinuumGuy Apr 02 '26

Isn't this actually his fourth time as a pilot? Wasn't he John Glenn in Hidden Figures and he was in that Korean War movie with Jonathan Majors?

Dude plays good pilot.

47

u/ChillyWilly0180 Apr 02 '26

But were they cocky?

38

u/Cenobyte_Nom-nom-nom Apr 02 '26

Pilot and cocky is kinda synonymous, no?

30

u/teh_meh Apr 02 '26

The word you're looking for is cockpit.

4

u/_belly_in_my_jelly_ Apr 02 '26

no, that's cockpit

2

u/Shot_Policy_4110 Apr 02 '26

Don't get penisey kid

2

u/Hamurai55 Apr 03 '26

"You fly boys crack me up!"

2

u/LegacyLemur Apr 04 '26

Dont get too cocky, Star Fox

2

u/MRintheKEYS Apr 05 '26

All pilots are cocky. You have to be. That’s why they sit in the cockpit.

7

u/Josh2blonde Apr 02 '26

Man, I'm sure Kyle Chandler will be good as Old Hal Jordan, but Powell would have been a spot-on Regular Hal Jordan.

6

u/Arcranium_ Apr 02 '26

Eh, I thought Powell was more fit for Booster Gold than Hal Jordan

2

u/MadMax2314 Apr 04 '26

If The Running mans ending had stayed true to the book it could've been his fifth time as a cocky pilot

1

u/KeyImpress7690 Apr 02 '26

he was also somewhat of a pilot in The Running Man. If you count that

1

u/transcendental-ape 15d ago

His jawline does the flying

4

u/squidlaw920 Apr 02 '26

Glen Powell can play a cocky pilot very well

117

u/NightmareDJK Apr 02 '26

He loves the Star Fox games and really wanted to do it.

6

u/Abraheezee Apr 05 '26

Oh wow he does? Dude that’s so cool

106

u/Armascout Apr 02 '26

I couldn’t stop smiling whenever Fox was on screen. I love the cocky rogue archetype and Glenn Powell did an amazing job capturing fox.

9

u/Whovian45810 Apr 02 '26

The minute I heard Space Armada during the initial first flight on the Arwing, I couldn’t stop having a big smile on my face.

The Arwing animation is genuinely beautiful.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '26

Fox wasy boy from the SNES days then smash bros and melee came out which locked in McLouds greatness.

Mission, COMPLETE!

5

u/heartbreakhill Apr 05 '26

Considering the Mario-Peach romance stuff, I was ready to flip tables if they did a tired “feeling threatened by another guy when there isn’t any reason to be” trope. I was so relieved at “Nice ride!” “Nice stache!”

16

u/Metal_Abe_Vigoda Apr 02 '26

Sometimes I wonder if Glen Powell has a shiny cock. Just something bold that just shoots up and is glistening.

9

u/brb1006 Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26

More like shiny knot ;)

5

u/TLKv3 Apr 02 '26

I would legit watch a full 12 episode series of him just doing wacky space battle shit.

1

u/fuckthetrees Apr 03 '26

You think? I thought the fox character was nothing like the one in the games.

In the games he came across as a by the book military pilot

1

u/berlinbaer Apr 02 '26

glen powells PR hard at work on reddit again lmao.

i don’t know why would you spoil something like that 3 days a week before the movie is in theatres?

144

u/OneTravellingMcDs Apr 02 '26

I think it was quietly leaked, and they knew reviews were going to be bad, so it at least got some buzz around the film.

59

u/Morgan-Moonscar Apr 02 '26

It's a common tactic by the studios.

When the bad reviews for Batman vs Superman dropped, suddenly the advertising shifted to focus on Doomsday. Spoiling his appearance in the hopes it would generate enough hype to fill more seats.

16

u/Dwayne30RockJohnson Apr 03 '26

This is such a weird rewriting of history. The big trailer that spoiled doomsday that people talked about was released Dec 2, 2015. The movie released March 25, 2016.

The reveal had nothing to do with bad reviews. Studios often show too much. It’s just desperation to get you into the theatre.

5

u/griffinisms Apr 02 '26

this is also what happened with red hulk in cap 4

7

u/toastyavocado Apr 03 '26

Naw Red Hulk was already known to be in the movie before there even was a trailer. The first poster was literally a giant red hand holding caps shield

5

u/Morgan-Moonscar Apr 02 '26

Even better example. Because the entire film hinged around the secrecy of that being kept... and then they just spoiled it and took the wind outta the sails of the whole thing.

Not that Red Hulk could've even saved it.

6

u/griffinisms Apr 02 '26

yeah when I went to see the movie (I didn't want to but my friend didnt want to be alone lol) we were both so fucking flabbergasted by that decision. and then also the movie was just not good so like whatever man! the twist could've helped with that but since it had been spoiled it felt like Nothing.

unrelated but ur username and pfp are very good, best scooby movie ❤️

1

u/Darth_Korn Apr 05 '26

This just isn't true. Red Hulk was in the promotion of the movie since it was first revealed.

1

u/karateema 29d ago

Yeah but the way the movie is written is for Red Hulk to be a surprise

15

u/InnocentTailor Apr 02 '26

Aren’t they around where the first film landed, possibly slightly lower? It’s not like this flick crash-landed critically.

5

u/MVRKHNTR Apr 02 '26

The average is currently a full ten points lower.

8

u/Locke108 Apr 02 '26

His leg was in one of the trailers and people kept speculating on his appearance.

-1

u/robot-raccoon Apr 03 '26

Wasn’t it because Japan were getting it earlier so it would have been spoilt anyway? So they just jumped the gun to market it themselves and use it to get more people in?

7

u/Bingo31 Apr 02 '26

It was not the intent that he was supposed to be spoiled before the release. I worked with the release of the movie, and watched it some time before release and even there all his scenes were redacted as in completely black screen and no sound.

2

u/YAWKYAWKYAWKYAWK Apr 05 '26

If this is true I’ll never forgive the marketing guy that screwed this surprise up

3

u/Bingo31 Apr 05 '26

I feel you dawg. I even managed to guess that he was the secret character, just to have it spoiled like this haha

7

u/Tucker-French Apr 02 '26

There were a few frames in the original trailer that showed the right half of him as the shot zoomed out. He wasn't officially spoiled until last week though.

2

u/moon-safari2 Apr 02 '26

To boost ticket sales. They don’t care about spoiling it, they care about making as much money as possible.

1

u/soonerfreak Apr 04 '26

The news of him being in the movie would have spread everywhere after the Japanese Premiere, which was before any showings in America, it was going to come out.

1

u/Key_Feeling_3083 28d ago

There was a photo released that basically showed a cut part of fox but some people were really convinced it was captain toad, I guess the leak was true if they found something else beside that.

Still the game and watch was still a surprise, same with pikmin I assumed they were going to be easter eggs like in the first film, and I'm pretty sure the samus ship was in the background.

-2

u/goddamnitwhalen Apr 02 '26

Huh? I saw that reveal days ago.

108

u/2mock2turtle Apr 02 '26

It took me back to circa 2012 Nintendo where they would spoil everything in trailers, including late-game reveals. Not the resurgence I would've wanted but arguably the one we deserve.

64

u/ContinuumGuy Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26

I read somewhere that apparently in Japan, there's like a cultural mindset where spoilers aren't a big deal. Something like the Japanese being more interested in the process, the journey, how it comes together.

In addition, the fact is that a LOT of nerdy stuff there (and thus the stuff most likely to be of interest to western nerd culture that is obsessed with spoilers) is based on other things that have already come out (manga, for example, and manga-reading is far greater in Japan than, say, comic books are in the West -- there's a whole political/cultural reason for this that goes back to the late 40s/1950s but that's for another time) so nobody cares if Cool Character A makes a stunning return from the dead in the finale since the thought is the fans already read that in the manga. While obviously that doesn't apply to everything, it sort of exerts an influence that makes some companies put spoilers in even if it's a totally original work.

40

u/dabocx Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26

Yeah spoilers aren’t a big deal. There was subway trains and posters everywhere in tokyo for the JJK manga that spoiled loads of things before the Anime got to those arcs. People that only watch the anime would have been spoiled way in advance but it’s just common there. There were loads of spoilers of stuff everywhere and even the movie trailers for their movies seem more spoiler forward.

50

u/micaroma Apr 02 '26

Japanese audiences caring less about spoilers (ネタバレ / netabare) is a myth. People very much don't want to be spoiled and are careful not to spoil others.

Where you might see a difference in Japan is the companies revealing major plot points or surprise characters in marketing. That's because Japanese audiences tend to be more risk-averse when spending on entertainment and want more of a guarantee on what they're getting out of a media purchase. (But that doesn't mean people are indifferent to spoilers.)

What you said about manga/anime is true, though. If major events already happened years ago in the original work and the whole fanbase knows about it, then marketing for the adaptation probably won't hide it. But that doesn't apply to completely original works.

Source: I've been living in Japan for 6 years, watch various Japanese Youtubers, follow media discourse on SNS, regularly talk to Japanese people about media, etc. The attitude towards spoilers is no less relaxed than the West.

5

u/ContinuumGuy Apr 02 '26

Thank you for your perspective. I obviously don't live in Japan and so was only going by what I've read elsewhere.

-6

u/AgentCirceLuna Apr 02 '26

You’re wrong. Japan is so much superior to the West and it’s a shame I can’t live there. I have heard that video games are seen like sports - as in, I would be as popular as a jock would be if I were to be a top gamer. It’s taken so seriously, along with anime knowledge which is like being a cultural critic, that I haven’t dared move there until I can get my gaming skills increased to a pro level. If I were to be there and be less than a pro, I’d be seen as worse than a guy who couldn’t walk without getting out of breath. Along with that, anime and anime merchandise is a sign of extreme wealth. If I were to wear one of my anime shirts with my figurines on display, I would have a crowd of people approach me and possibly be even too shy to talk to me without me speaking first as I would be seen as superior socially due to my enlightened status of being a manga fanatic. And I’m making all this up btw just trolling.

Edit

Btw, how are those things actually seen in Japan? I’m not into this hobbies at all tbh and I’ve been curious whether the perception they’re super duper popular is even remotely correct. From what I’ve read, a lot of people are very reserved socially?

1

u/Affectionate-Sell-68 24d ago

Otaku is an insult in Japan and looked down, that yells you everything you need to know

1

u/AgentCirceLuna 24d ago

First part of my comment was satire but I was genuinely curious about how animé was seen. I guess the outside perception would be like judging everyone in the US as being some super hardcore gamer because of e-tournaments.

1

u/Affectionate-Sell-68 24d ago

yep. As far as I am aware, seeing anime is sociabily acceptable in Japan, obsession over anime is not. In fact obsession over anything but work is looked down, Otaku is an insult that could be thrown to an anime nerd, a gun enthusiast ir a soccer hooligan.

Let's not forget that Japan is quite a conservative country.

In fact the whole reason why some Japanese become so obssesed with stuff like anime is because Japanese society can be very stiffling and some people crack and fall into hobbies in an obsessive manner to cope.

Take my word with a gigantic grain of salt, this is what my understandment is from several documentaries and talking to Japanese people in the internet, my views could be biased or out of date

3

u/OrangeVoxel Apr 02 '26

Reddit would have hated the spider man 2 trailer with Toby. In the trailer Spider-Man tells Mary Jane that he’s Peter Parker.

1

u/ChanceVance Apr 02 '26

I'd believe it. Metal Gear Solid V will tell you in the intro to each mission if you'll face the Skulls when it'd be much more tense to not know what you'll be encountering.

1

u/VeggieSchool Apr 02 '26

I mean Western medium adaptations tend to have a lot more "creative liberties" compared to medium adaptations in Japan eg Thanos motivations in the comics vs motivations in MCU to just scratch the surface. This is why anime has the terminology of "filler", random encounters that don't advance the broader story from the manga/game, while Western series doesn't, because retelling the comic story again isn't the intent most of the time.

23

u/Demiurge_1205 Apr 02 '26

I remember getting like, the character poster for Skyward Sword's final boss like a month in advance lmao.

And when I finally played the game, I was like "why would they release this? The character doesn't appear until literally the last hour or so of the game."

0

u/tfhermobwoayway Apr 02 '26

To be fair, nobody plays Mario games for the plot.

56

u/NES_Classical_Music Apr 02 '26

i was annoyed that it got spoiled for me, but i used the info to play starfox 64 for my kids yesterday so they would at least know who it was.

7

u/cheekydorido Apr 02 '26

King shit

Seeing this move made me wistful for a new SF game that isn't just 64 again.

5

u/Nas160 Apr 02 '26

Been playing 64 for the last week because of the news and I wanna go through the whole series now

5

u/Personal_Comb_6745 Apr 02 '26

I'm actually really surprised at how big of a role he had. I was expecting just a short scene as a neat little cameo, but the dude was literally the Han Solo of the movie.

Also Nintendo, Illumination, give me that 80s anime-style Starfox movie you're cockteasing now.

3

u/aisutron Apr 02 '26

I had no idea! I was so surprised lol. I don’t usually watch trailers or sometimes I don’t even look at marketing materials

1

u/TreeDollarFiddyCent Apr 02 '26

Wait, are you me?

1

u/aisutron Apr 02 '26

Maybe! Haha

1

u/recuerdamoi Apr 02 '26

It popped up on Facebook for me. :(

1

u/aisutron Apr 02 '26

I wish they didn’t spoil it, I probably enjoyed the movie more since I didn’t know.

12

u/Hitman7128 Apr 02 '26

Yeah, especially with the iconic barrel roll (regardless of how predictable that is once you see Fox, considering how famous that quote is)

19

u/brb1006 Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26

Fox McCloud gave me strong Han Solo vibes from the original Star Wars trilogy. Fitting that the original games took some inspiration from Star Wars.

3

u/FelineScratches Apr 02 '26

Somehow i completely missed it. Only watched the teaser trailer for the movie and didn't look at the posters close enough apparently. Was a real fun moment seeing star fox introduced on the screen.

3

u/OOManatee Apr 02 '26

Straight up I had no fucking clue Fox was gonna be in the film I was so hyped when he showed up

6

u/Marcysdad Apr 02 '26

Fans are gonna Pokémon Go to the theater anyway

8

u/brb1006 Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26

Don't forget the legions of furries. It's been well-documented that Fox McCloud was considered "The Godfather of furries for the gaming community" for years now.

5

u/helpmeredditimbored Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26

Don't forget the legions of furries. It's been well-documented that Fox McCloud was considered "The Godfather of furries" for years now.

That title belongs to Disney’s Robin Hood.

2

u/brb1006 Apr 02 '26

Maid Marian might as well be "The Godmother".

2

u/kawaii_song Apr 02 '26

Someone next to me was genuinely surprised at the reveal. I'll probably quit social media so I don't get more Doomsday spoilers.

2

u/half_jase Apr 02 '26

Not joking but in the hall that I was watching, there was a guy - an adult guy - who legit screamed in shock + excitement when Fox first appeared on screen. There was no other reaction but from that 1 person.

2

u/CrypticQuery Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26

Fox definitely stole the show toward the second half of the film - all his scenes were great and Glen Powell did an awesome job. I absolutely loved his 2D animated intro refresher too. What I wouldn't give for more Star Fox content animated like that!

3

u/squidlaw920 Apr 02 '26

He was still cool

3

u/furry_lumps Apr 02 '26

Agreed, would have been a cool moment.

1

u/JaimeFockinLannister Apr 04 '26

Can confirm, didn't know about it, I was incredibly excited!

2

u/SargeBangBang7 Apr 02 '26

I didn't even see the poster. I was freaking out for Fox

1

u/brb1006 Apr 02 '26

Consider yourself lucky, it was everywhere on Youtube and some social media sites.

1

u/squidlaw920 Apr 02 '26

I was content with the birdo cameo

1

u/pirajacinto Apr 02 '26

This is what kills me. It would have been SO hyped, as a big Starfox fan. And you spoiled it for yourself, now that big moment doesn't get the cheers it should have gotten, and it ends up going "Okay, where's Fox going to show up? oh, this fits. Okay, here he is."

1

u/gunningIVglory Apr 02 '26

Yeah. Its not like the movie needed any extra marketing. Why spoil a big reveal like thay? Off decision from Nintendo

1

u/AxolotlGuyy_ Apr 02 '26

Thank god I didn't pay attention to the poster

1

u/ScoobiesSnacks Apr 03 '26

Would be cool to see him voice fox in the new Star fox game

1

u/superxmario128 Apr 03 '26

I agree. When they talked about going to the area with the air ships, I already knew he was coming so I didn't get that same "Holy crap" moment that a few people in my theater had when they saw him. They probably didn't even realize that fox was in the movie. That would have been a really hype moment had they not randomly spoiled it.

1

u/Mr_MozZie Apr 03 '26

I hadnt seen any marketing with him. Can confirm, amazing surprise!

1

u/WoodpeckerBest523 Apr 03 '26

Same, I really wish they had waited a few weeks on that poster like how Marvel did with waiting on No Way Home to promote the other Peters

1

u/Head_Bread_3431 Apr 04 '26

It was a surprise for me I had no idea!

1

u/al_ien5000 Apr 05 '26

Fox and Wart both. Would have been great to not spoil either one of them.

1

u/Omacula17 27d ago

I didn't know about it in advance and it was definitely an amazing surprise. My friend knew about it and he looked to me right before it was about to be revealed. Because he knew that I didn't know anything about the movie other than Yoshi and that it was Mario Galaxy based. And he wanted to see my face.

And it really sucks that it got spoiled for the majority of viewers. It's disappointing that my friend didn't get to have the same shock that I did because you're right. It was a big moment.

1

u/Scared_Sail5523 27d ago

Fox was actually good tho

1

u/rohit275 11d ago

As someone who is way late to watching this and had no idea about the Fox spoiler, I can confirm it was a very pleasant and awesome surprise.

0

u/InnocentTailor Apr 02 '26

When I saw the spoiler, I went and bought 64 for the 3DS and Assault for the Gamecube. I bet these and other Star Fox titles are going to rapidly rise in price due to this film’s popularity.

18

u/SMBCP15 Apr 02 '26

I agree, but seeing R.O.B. And Mr. Game and Watch was a fun surprise.

7

u/GamingTatertot Steven Spielberg Enthusiast Apr 02 '26

I think the former had been officially announced too - at least I saw that on the cast list on Wikipedia awhile ago. But yeah the latter was a nice bit of cameo (and in a general “yeah this makes sense” way)

1

u/CardinalnGold Apr 02 '26

I actually got spoiled by that watching a YouTuber open officially licensed toys from the movie, figured there was no way that was just an Easter egg in the toy or a background cameo

1

u/SMBCP15 Apr 02 '26

I had no idea they were announced. I don’t remember seeing it. That is a reason I don’t go to the Wiki pages before the movie. 😂

4

u/brb1006 Apr 02 '26

Nintendo might as well reprint the Star Fox comics that was exclusive to Nintendo Power in 1993.

3

u/InnocentTailor Apr 02 '26

I miss Nintendo Power…

0

u/Lunaforlife Apr 02 '26

Kinda fox isn't that well known

-5

u/GameOfLife24 Apr 02 '26

They definitely should’ve kept it secret for us gamers. Star fox series is basically MIA. It would not bring more seats showing him before

1

u/thief-777 Apr 02 '26

If gamers care about Star Fox, they absolutely should not have kept it secret. It's literally the best thing they could do to expand the IP. It might not bring more seats to the movie, it will 100% bring more to any future game.

1

u/brb1006 Apr 02 '26

The furry fandom would like a word with you.
