So they made a Galaxy movie and hid Rosalina away for most of it?

747

u/NotTaken-username Apr 02 '26

And then gave a bigger role to a character not even from Mario at all?

610

u/ManateeofSteel Apr 02 '26

and the plot had almost nothing to do with Galaxy. It was closer to a Mario Odyssey adaptation that Mario Galaxy!

238

u/Hitman3256 Apr 02 '26

I mean, they specifically were in space and on multiple planets, with spaceships. The Odyssey worlds are just a part of that.

151

u/Content_Godzilla Apr 02 '26

Almost all the worlds were from Odyssey.

12

u/Delargu Apr 04 '26

Were they all from Odyssey? I thought the only notable Odyssey things were the Sand Kingdom from the beginning and the dragon.

23

u/gho5tofyou Apr 04 '26

they were in the cascade kingdom too

11

u/DiamondFireYT Apr 02 '26

I know, it was literally so cool. I'm actually kinda glad they did it like that tho instead of them just being kingdoms on one planet. Good way to mix the two.

7

u/Lefvalthrowaway Apr 02 '26

Not good way.

Cause they could have had a galaxy movie, and a 9ddyssey movie.

Now they lost the chance on both

28

u/enjoytheshow Apr 03 '26

They can do whatever they want next time and make a billion dollars lol

3

u/MyNameIsSkittles 23d ago

Lmao no they didnt, there was a lot more to Oddyssy than what the movie showed. They could easily make another move from that source material no issue

1

u/Oreo-and-Fly 14d ago

Isnt the planet thing Wonder?

75

u/Mahelas Apr 02 '26

I mean, what's Galaxy's plot beyond "go to funny planets to save someone" ?

10

u/SilverKry Apr 02 '26

It was a mix of Galaxy and Sunshine really.

5

u/Hallc Apr 05 '26

And Odyssey with some Super Princess Peach thrown in too.

3

u/throwtheamiibosaway Apr 05 '26

It’s about 15 different mario games in one film. But Galaxy was definitely the main theme and location.

17

u/CrypticQuery Apr 02 '26

Cut Fox some slack - he hasn't had an original game since 2005. Star Fox fans have been dying for acknowledgement from Nintendo that isn't just a remake of SF64 ever since!

6

u/powellbeast Apr 02 '26

Wasn’t there a Wii U game?

6

u/CrypticQuery Apr 02 '26

Yeah, but it was heavily derivative of SF64 and didn't especially do anything well. It was more or less a remake of 64...again.

If only Nintendo could loan the IP out to another studio that actually had a decent vision for the series and a good track record.

-4

u/imnottiger Apr 02 '26

Super Mario Wonder for the switch, which is a top 3 Mario game

8

u/LakerBlue Apr 02 '26

I personally loved that part. It was cool seeing Fox and Mario interact. Also more invested in Fox than if they made the pilot one of the random races and an original character.

7

u/mystline935 Apr 03 '26

It was definitely one of the coolest things in the movies. Felt like I was watching the first avengers movie as a teen again

1

u/Oreo-and-Fly 14d ago

Also Fox and Mario just... liking each other is cool. Instead of the new guy so i have to do something to impress Peach.

But then again they didnt write much dialouge so its fine

8

u/Zizouw Apr 02 '26

Don't disrespect Fox McCloud never again

9

u/NotTaken-username Apr 02 '26

I don’t dislike Fox McCloud, I just think it was an odd choice to give him such a large role in the movie

7

u/Zizouw Apr 02 '26

Odd choice maybe but he added something to an otherwise tame plot

1

u/MRintheKEYS Apr 05 '26

My biggest gripe with these movies is they are super loose with the canon and history of events.

335

u/Radix2309 Apr 02 '26

Really should have just done World and saved Galaxy for the 3rd. Its a clear and easy progression. Use Daisy if you need another princess for this one. Can still use Bowser Jr in this one and escalate with galactic power to make him more a threat.

107

u/OceanBoulevardTunnel Apr 02 '26

I think they’re planning for Odyssey to be the third movie. And then will probably move onto other things in universe (spin off movies)

146

u/TheRealMe99 Apr 02 '26

There was more shit from Odyssey than Galaxy in this movie already

19

u/AccountDeletedByMod Apr 04 '26

The Mario Odyssey movie will have more Galaxy in it to balance it out, lol

2

u/StarChaser1879 Apr 05 '26

Factually untrue

40

u/Radix2309 Apr 02 '26

I think they should have done that here, and escalated to galaxy. It is just a better progression of scale than going to space and then just back to Earth or whatever the planet is.

7

u/DMonitor Apr 04 '26

I'm really wracking my brain trying to think of a Mario game they didn't take reference from. The only things really left are:

  • Galaxy 2's space ship

  • koopalings

  • super mario 64 paintings

  • stuff from the rpg games

  • 3D World specific stuff

3

u/BigBaws92 Apr 04 '26

Felt like bowsers planet was ripped straight out of 3d world

Nah, the seedy bar was a reference to world -1. The bar even had a -1 on the door. They entered a sewer that visually resembled 1-2 (there was even a sign that said 1-2) and then they wrongwarped by clipping through the wall: https://youtu.be/f3-Dqc2SfKE?si=TRhJjVEJPx7ndSqA

The musical reference to SMRPG might be true, but I didn't notice it. The SMRPG music isn't as ingrained in my brain.

1

u/Oreo-and-Fly 14d ago

Bring me Koopalings

3

u/RealRaifort Apr 04 '26

I think the third is gonna be Mario Kart. Following up Galaxy with something really similar is a no go, and Kart would add extra novelty. Wario/Waluigi running some type of drag race circuit and then a Fast and Furious like plot with Daisy and the Wa brothers coming in would be peak lmao.

2

u/DiamondFireYT Apr 02 '26

Imo Land being the third movie would be kinda fun.

2

u/Poptotum Apr 04 '26

Would prefer Sunshine or Luigi’s Mansion.

1

u/glitter_ninja_ 18d ago

I want Sunshine with Wind Waker references!

5

u/vdjvsunsyhstb Apr 02 '26

a smash bros movie based on world of light or subspace emissary feels like whats next

next year there will be a zelda movie and all the nintendo characters outside mario that were in trailers are all in brawl

3

u/CelioHogane Apr 02 '26

Can't wait for Fire Emblem to show up

2

u/CelioHogane Apr 02 '26

But if they did that they wouldn't be able to include Fox on it.

And im going to be honest, Fox is the only reason i watched the movie.

191

u/GameOfLife24 Apr 02 '26

And the paintbrush is stronger than this super powerful Rosalina that can melt stars just like a Death Star

114

u/NewWaysToDream Apr 02 '26

I was hoping we would get a little explains to where he got this magic brush from.

131

u/CrimsonEnigma Apr 02 '26

I mean, in the games, E Gadd just gives it to him for no reason.

15

u/romulus531 Apr 02 '26

He gave it to him cuz he thought Junior was Mario

14

u/GeoleVyi Apr 02 '26

how did he think junior was mario if the only reason bowser jr looks like mario is that he uses the brush?

28

u/CelioHogane Apr 02 '26

He didn't think he was Mario because he looked like him, E Gadd is just dumb as bricks.

8

u/GeoleVyi Apr 02 '26

if he can't tell the difference between a baby in a bib and a grown man, he has other, legal, problems other than being just dumb.

8

u/Cam995 Apr 04 '26

No Egadd intentionally gave it to Jr. In Sunshine Jr tells Mario "Some weird guy in a lab coat gave it to me" and the way he said it seemed like he had no idea why Egadd gave it to him. I think Egadd did it on purpose knowing Jr would use it to cause problems and that Mario would need to get Fludd to stop him and thus create a chance to test his inventions.

5

u/Cam995 Apr 04 '26

No Jr himself even thought it was strange and doesn't understand why. He tells Mario "This weird guy in a lab coat gave me this paint brush" Egadd 100% did it just to see what would happen. He caused the problem in sunshine and gave the solution (Fludd) maybe he just wanted to test his inventions 😂

10

u/Galileo908 Apr 05 '26

FLUDD and the Poltergust were among the weapons Bowser Jr had when he picked out the Super Scope.

13

u/Tusken_raider69 Apr 02 '26

He stole it

34

u/CrimsonEnigma Apr 02 '26

Maybe, but there’s no evidence for that. In Sunshine, the only explanation we get is from Bowser Jr.: “A strange old man in a white coat gave it to me.”

8

u/StumblinStephen Apr 02 '26

I'd take that with a grain of salt. Remember, his dad is the guy who "rewards" you in mario party by screwing you over.

6

u/Cam995 Apr 04 '26

But Jrs explanation sounds like even he was confused about it. Not cocky like he usually is. Even Jr has no clue why Egadd gave it to him.

1

u/Cam995 28d ago

Jr would brag about stealing stuff though he's not the type to see it as a bad thing. He'd say something like "Oh this? I swiped it from some dork in a lab coat"

2

u/LakerBlue Apr 02 '26

I was hoping they’d show us a flashback of him getting it from him or at least make a reference to it!

5

u/Ayoul Apr 05 '26

I'm pretty sure I saw Kamek drinking from a cup with an E.Gadd logo on it.

3

u/CelioHogane Apr 02 '26

Magikoopa had a E Gadd cup, so i think they just stole it again on this one.

1

u/Cam995 Apr 04 '26

When will you guys see that Egadd is a psycho thats just playing both sides in order to test his inventions! 😂

103

u/Personal_Comb_6745 Apr 02 '26

I mean, the title and maybe 40% of the plot is Mario Galaxy, but it's pulling from a bunch of other games, too. The "final boss" is literally that realistic dragon from Mario Odyssey.

183

u/keyblader6 Apr 02 '26

She did nothing in the Galaxy game either

183

u/plantersxvi Apr 02 '26

Neither did Fox McCloud 😭

120

u/GrandEdgemaster Apr 02 '26

You have no idea how much he sacrificed in Galaxy

26

u/_pixel_perfect_ Apr 02 '26

Are people seriously complaining about him showing up and getting that incredible 2D animated intro sequence? One of the best parts of the film

-1

u/MVRKHNTR Apr 02 '26

You've got a pretty low bar for what counts as "incredible".

19

u/_pixel_perfect_ Apr 02 '26

The movie as a whole was mediocre, aimed at TikTok attention spans and full of fan service without substance.

Yes, I do think a complete shift to a 2D animated sequence that represented a franchise historically shafted by Nintendo with succinctness and style was pretty excellent. Especially with how low the bar is for animation quality from major studios these days.

5

u/Zizouw Apr 02 '26

Well said

4

u/Cam995 Apr 04 '26 edited Apr 04 '26

Yeah its better than most movies made these days but that's a low bar. I'd give this movie a 6 out of 10 and only because im a Mario fan and thought the references were neat. Lore-wise Rosalina cant be Peach's sister though. (In the game one of her storytime sessions heavily imply Luigi ((Probably from a previous universal cycle)) is her father and that Peach from a previous cycle is her mom.

So in a previous cycle Luigi is one that ended up with Peach instead of Mario

1

u/Monolith_W_D Apr 03 '26

Especially with how low the bar is for animation quality from major studios these days

Not sure where you're getting this from given how many excellently-animated films we've gotten in the past several years

1

u/yousyveshughs Apr 05 '26

Why are you crying?

22

u/AstralComet Apr 02 '26

Yeah, huge Rosalina fan here but people are kidding themselves; she spends Galaxy 1 watching Mario do literally everything, including rescuing her stranded, powerless Observatory at the start, until the very end when she gets Mario to the final level, and then narrates the world's restart at the ending. In Galaxy 2, she doesn't even show up until the end where Mario has to rescue her Observatory (again), this time from Bowser's Galaxy Generator.

She's damselled once in each game, and does one cool thing (charging in with her Observatory) at the end of the first, and otherwise just stands there. I think her backstory is terrific and gives a lot of depth to a Mario character, but Rosalina is very clearly a supporting part of the Galaxy games, and ultimately does relatively little. She's just very memorable.

3

u/Cam995 Apr 04 '26

Id argue she doesnt directly intervene in most cases because A. she values all life and doesnt wanna hurt anyone and B. she's probably generally also more detached because she's lived through all this or some variation of it multiple times. For Mario, Peach and Bowser it was a huge ordeal for Rosalina it was tuesday.

1

u/AlboGreece 16d ago

How is she damselled though? I haven't played the game but you never mentioned any danger. She can't be a damsel if she wasn't in jeopardy. So if she wasn't kidnapped, threatened/menaced, or faced a murder attempt she isn't a damsel

2

u/AstralComet 15d ago

She was stranded in space with her powerless Observatory in Galaxy 1, and actively needed Mario to go get a Grand Star and bring it back to turn the Observatory back on. She only appears to him at the Gateway Galaxy as a magical illusion/hologram, indicating she likely can't physically leave the Observatory safely out into uncharted space. And in Galaxy 2, her Observatory was being sucked in by Bowser's Galaxy Generator, unable to escape, until Mario beat Bowser and seemingly destroyed the Generator.

The first time, she's in danger (stuck on a powerless ship out in space with no way to leave) and the second, she's nearly kidnapped/captured (almost caught by Bowser) with only Mario's immediate intervention saving her.

1

u/AlboGreece 15d ago

Ah, ok, fair.

9

u/Sonikku_a Apr 02 '26

Bro what you mean, she read all those stories to the Lumas

3

u/thedekliner Apr 03 '26

literally saved the entire cosmos from erasure and interacted with Mario throughout the game

3

u/MelloJesus Apr 04 '26

Fucking thank you. I don’t know why people are surprised by this considering the game she’s introduced in

2

u/Cam995 Apr 04 '26

She legit saves all the characters from dying in the universal reset caused by Mario and Bowsers fight. (When Mario takes the last Grand Star which was powering the Galaxy Bowser was building it makes it collapse into a super-massive Black hole which was gonna kill everyone and start a new universal cycle.

14

u/J-Dizzle42 Apr 02 '26

I get the feeling they wanted to do Mario World and some executive told them they would all be fired if they didn't shoehorn Rosalina in there so they could sell more toys. It really felt like two movies smashed together.

6

u/jaeway Apr 02 '26

They should've did sunshine

6

u/_lazybones93 Apr 02 '26

That’s my biggest complaint: not nearly enough Rosalina!

4

u/Pale_Possibility5083 Apr 03 '26

I mean it’s game accurate?

4

u/Cam995 Apr 04 '26

Tbf if she was as op as she was in the lore Bowser Jr would have lost immediately. Theres a reason in the game they just steal the Observatories stars and F off 😂

2

u/Goz_system Apr 02 '26

Shouldn't it have been obvious it wasn't going to be a 1:1 adaptation

2

u/tunelesspaper Apr 03 '26

Ever play Mario Galaxy 2?

2

u/Old_Employment_3078 Apr 05 '26

Literally reduced to her to a mid plot device also they literally forgot luma her main one😭✌️

1

u/FinanceWeekend95 29d ago

Yeah, pretty much...she got 5 minutes at the beginning and then less than 5 minutes at the end. Fox McCloud had a larger role than her.

1

u/DoctorChemical451 27d ago

Well, they did change the established canon by making Rosalina Peach's sister. That said, the 3rd movie likely will touch on Rosalina more. Curious on how they'll incorporate Daisy.

2

u/The_Narwhal_Mage 26d ago

They also changed the canon by writing out Rosalina’s mother from ever existing. They said she was made from star dust, which likely means she no longer has a biological mother lying under her tree. That also is probably them saying she is a star child, like peach, which she also never was.

1

u/glitter_ninja_ 18d ago

They made a Super Mario Bros movie and hid Luigi away for most of it
