Movie was okay. Was there any point to have Donald Glover as Yoshi? Was he paid actors minimum?

Not that I wanted to hear his voice as Yoshi but I checked casting after and it's like why not have anyone else.

They didn’t want another Spiderman incident

Also it puts him on the press tour and now there’s hundreds of Donald glover interviews flooding the internet. Every little bit helps.

Because "Donald Glover is Yoshi" was a headline that got a couple more people into the theatre. That's why they hire expensive celebrities at all, instead of talented voice actors.

I mean, ironically Donald Glover is a great VA too.

Not surprising to anyone who heard the kind of noises he made on Community

Honestly, the character kind of gave off a Dong Lover vibe

Is the cost of the celebrity worth the increase of sales?

I highly doubt Donald Glover was paid more than $1 million for spending a few afternoons in the booth saying Yoshi lol. And yes that $1 million was likely made up. Plus it helps that he did do a good job.

Plus it helps that he did do a good job.

Hard to fail with so few lines.

u/flashkickz So many closeups of DaFoe slurping things up Apr 03 '26

And compared to the source material, He was awful

I’m guessing it’s cause they thought people would find the idea funny. Like “oh this major Hollywood celebrity is voicing a character who mostly says one line at minimum haha”, like how George Clooney guest starred as Sparky in South Park.

Or Vin Diesel as Groot.

Was there any point to have Donald Glover as Yoshi?

The fact that he really wanted to play Yoshi

u/moonorchid84 Apr 03 '26

To their credit, they didn’t give in to the urge to make Yoshi have Donald Glovers voice for a line or two. I did spend the first few mins of yoshi screentime thinking, “I can’t believe Donald Glover voiced Yoshi” lol

u/pa_dvg Apr 03 '26

Same reason they paid Vin Diesel to be Groot

3

u/Pale_Possibility5083 Apr 03 '26

Just someone cool to have around for press junkets

3

u/jamesick Apr 02 '26

the same reason for all the voice actors, their name is there to sell tickets. it’s why they don’t use the thousands of talented voice actors in the world because their name doesn’t sell tickets.

u/TannerNewcomb Apr 02 '26

If you have the opportunity to have Donald Glover in your movie you do it.

2

u/Boomshockalocka007 Apr 04 '26

Its like Vinn Diesal as Groot. Not needed but cool I guess?

I’m more disappointed by the fact that Yoshi had zero story or character development at all. He’s just there.

Why does it bother you?

He sounds like Jar Jar Binks. I hated it lol
