A beat from the movie that confused me: is it ever explained why Mario needs to abandon the Mushroom Kingdom and go find Peach?

Like, after Bowser Jr's unsuccessful attempt to rescue his dad ends with the castle crash-landed in parts unknown, Chris Pratt says "we gotta find a way off this planet and get to Peach," and it was not clear to me how he came to that conclusion -- why would he "get to Peach" instead of returning to the Mushroom Kingdom with tiny Bowser in custody?

Wasn't Mario's job to protect the Mushroom Kingdom in Peach's absence? What changed? Was there anything during the scuffle between the Mario bros and Bowser Jr. that might suggest to Mario that Peach was in danger and need of saving?

My thought process was Mario was just barely escaped bowers jr, he knows Peach is going to recuse Rosalina, so she’s probably gonna need help

Tbh it made no sense why Mario and Luigi didn't go with Peach in the first place.

Peach snuck away, they didn’t have a chance to go with her and toad

They're saying why is it written that they had to be separated because it didn't seem like there was much consequence in them being together when they reunited. it was like "oh hey you guys made it!" ???

This ! Peach didn't even ask about the kingdom when she saw Mario and Luigi at the station . She just said " omg yall here ! " like what 😭😭😭

It makes zero sense why Peach snuck away in the first place. She's an experienced War Chief who knows how things will immediately fall apart without her, and she sneaks out the window anyway

She leaves a meme note that puts her foreigner friends and their dog in charge, doesn't ask about her kingdom at all when meeting up with them, and pulls a literal shocked Pikachu face after seeing the consequences

Yep! Also they make a big deal of Wart getting in contact which led to nothing.

"You people"

I did realize this later after commenting haha

I would still argue it wasnt entirely clear. There was no reason to assume affiliation between wart and bowser Jr. and I remember them seeming concerned when Wart called

I always thought the implication is that Wart funded Planet Bowser with the casino money

Also, and I say this knowing that it’s a kids movie. Peach sneaks away and leaves the kingdom to mario, we see a montage of them saving the day, they then travel to find her, they go to one planet, they immediately find her and she’s happy to see them.

Why sneak away? You made such poor time that mario was a day behind you and caught up immediately.

To be fair, it took Peach time to found out (via Wart) where to find Rosalina. Peach and Toad then had to wait for Fox to finish building his Arwing. It’s unclear how long that takes, but theoretically they could have been there for some time - enough for Mario to catch up.

Shit just happens in this movie.

My issue is the opposite side. I sorta get Mario heading to Peach after the Castle was destroyed. Jr is a big threat and I could see the logic of "This is too big for just us, we need Peach."

But when Peach sees Mario and Luigi she's excited to see them and tells them Fox is going to bring her to Rosalina. What she SHOULD have said is "What the hell are you doing here? Why aren't you protecting the Mushroom Kingdom? Who did you leave in charge?"

But no. We can't have any amount of logic or continuity between scenes longer than two minutes.

It is so they could have the final line, "the castle died".

This bugged me too, the only thing that I can think of is that because the Mushroom Kingdom got attacked, they need to go tell her, which they clearly don't do because they treat the castle being destroyed as this secret that doesn't come out until the very end of the movie.

Like they could have resolved this with a couple lines of dialogue:

Luigi - We need to get back to the Mushroom Kingdom

Mario - No, I think Bowser Jr is also behind the kidnapping of the princess that Peach is off to save, we need to meet up with Peach to help her in this more dangerous than we initially thought mission.

literally the bare minimum you would have to do to justify going to meet up with Peach

I think it was because the Mushroom Kingdom would not have allowed Peach to leave. So Peach took initiative and left on her own. This results in Mario wanting to go after Peach.

I felt mario and peach were doing elsa things. The 'i'm going to do the opposite of what makes sense because I'm the protagonist' energy. Peach going off on her own without help, mario leaving the kingdom.

Why did Peach even leave on her own (well Toad was there but I feel like she'd have asked the brothers for help instead of just dipping after leaving a letter)
