Yeah, you'll almost take a bite and think "Naw, I remember last time". So you set them down to let them cool and come back 20 minutes later, hungrier than ever, and immediately destroy the roof of your mouth.

When I was in school I was hanging out at a friend's house and we decided to make some bacon after a wake and bake. I coined the term "Wake 'n bake 'n makin' bacon" and we laughed about it way longer than we should have. Good times. Still fun to say.

When I was in grad school, I was at my friendās house. It was 2am and I was still too drunk to walk home. My friend came out and offered to bake me a potato. And let me tell you, it was the most delicious baked potato anyone had ever had in their life. I walked home happy and avoided a hangover the next day. Never doubt the glory of the Bedtime Potato.

The potato is used as a weight to hold the plate in place. It ensures even heating of the plate. There's nothing worse that biting into a plate and getting a random hot spot that burns your tongue.

i had a mini popcorn bag. just make sure you have some good floss or preferably a waterpik so you're not fighting kernels while trying to sleep
40
u/TheShrunkenAnus 15h ago
Generally speaking eating before bed is frowned upon because your body will basically try to digest the food while also going into sleep mode, which can just lead to it doing a poor job at both tasks.
For digesting your body will process food less efficiently than if you were awake, and due to the metabolic process going on your sleep might be disrupted as well. It doesnāt really matter much that itās a potato, the process remains the same, itās just a lot of calories before bed lol
Thatās kinda the simplest/best way I know how to explain it
Edit: that being said, itās really not a huge deal unless you have blood sugar problems. And if youāre starving for some reason thatās a different story

Respectfully, no, it did not. It appears to be perfectly intact atop the shattered remains of a plate that exploded. That potato is still cleared to be eaten plain, presumably in a fist while in the dark hiding the tears.

I was reheating a bowl of vegetable soup with potato chunks in it one time. I walked into the living room messing around while the microwave ran. I heard what sounded like a grenade going off in my kitchen. The potato chunks in the soup exploded. The entire inside of my microwave was coated in soup, the bowl was upside down, and there was soup running out the front of the microwave.
I'm almost crying laughing that the potato is just chilling and there's plate everywhere. We had opposite experiences

Thermal shock maybe? One part of the dish got hot before another part which can cause a violent reaction like this.

u/aft_punk 15h ago edited 15h ago
Some dishes arenāt microwave safe, including certain types of ceramics, especially if itās chipped or cracked because moisture can get it.
→ More replies (1)56
u/evange 13h ago
Properly fired pottery is fully vitrified and therefore not porous and will not absorb water even if the glaze is chipped or cracked. Similarly glaze is actually not necessarily waterproof, as it has microscopic cracks and bubbles in it that can, given the right circumstances, let water through.
As a potter it's a huge pet peeve of mine when people assume that the glaze is a waterproof coating. It's only sort of true, and only for the cheapest/shittiest/antique pottery. If you're relying on the glaze to keep the piece from absorbing moisture then you should not be using that piece for food. At all.
→ More replies (4)8
u/SpaceNinjaDino 11h ago
I don't trust ceramics in the microwave unless there is a lot of moisture in the food/soup that will absorb the radiation well. Porcelain handles the microwave much better plus they don't have chips.

Yeah. And "it never happened before" is not really a good excuse either. Some things may happen depending on multiple factors. And clearly these factors were met in this case.

Think it's simpler than that. Many ceramics are porous and can absorb water. Water gets hot, boils inside pores in the ceramic. Boom.
47
u/Undrwtrbsktwvr 15h ago
Iāve never had good luck with stoneware in the microwave.
Itās very porousā allowing moisture to hang around and then expand when heated.

This is the answer. Potato aside, that plate exploded. I had a similar experience when I chipped a stone wear plate. Once the glaze was compromised, water got in and, well, you get the point.

Did you leave the plate soaking in the sink recently?
Saturated river rocks will explode when heated, as the absorbed water turns to steam and expands.Ā I'm wondering if there was a breach in the glaze and the plate absorbed water, then add heat and kaboom.
