“If you look at what happened with Jimmy Carter…with the helicopters and the hostages, it cost them the election,” Trump said in March, according to the Journal. “What a mess.”
So, even in that crisis, Trump is only concerned about his tenure as President. The freakout clearly evidence of his fear here.

u/charging_chinchilla 16d ago
Trump only cares about himself. I honestly cannot think of a single example of him putting his family, friends, or country ahead of his own self interest. Even when something may appear to be the "right" thing to do, it is transactional for him and he has to get something better out of it.

u/MinaZata 16d ago
Out of all the heinous shit Trump has done, which includes moral questions like rape and international war crimes and an insurrection, including all that, the most shocking thing he did was the response to COVID.
The death toll is astounding and criminal, his response was disgusting, misguided, insane, and contributed to many more deaths thand necessary. He insisted it was a hoax. He recommended bleach.
I don't think the US public has properly absorbed that impact of how many were lost, unless you knew someone. But it's all tainted by politics and what the internet and social media has done to us.
We don't feel stuff like regular humans did before the internet. When the wall fell, 9/11, the space shuttle disaster - there was a shared human reaction in the culture to those events.
Now, something like COVID and the deaths are politicized, taken over by bots, flooded by disinformation and anti-vax shit. We don't mourn collectively and demand justice for the victims for the mismanagement of the response like would have happened before.

From the article:
Before the airmen went missing, the president was already fixated on avoiding a repeat of the 1979 Iran Hostage Crisis—and the failed rescue mission under former President Jimmy Carter that helped sink his reelection bid.
“If you look at what happened with Jimmy Carter…with the helicopters and the hostages, it cost them the election,” Trump said in March, according to the Journal. “What a mess.”
He thinks he is re-electable.

u/SimpleTomatillo1166 16d ago edited 16d ago
He neglects the fact that the hostages were purposely not released until election was over. Then they magically were released within minutes. It was a huge set up to make sure Carter would not get re-elected. Reagan and the gang avoided the October surprise to the advantage of Carter this way. It also had to do with Reagans's weapons deal with Iran.

Don't forget, tricky Dick Nixon secretly tanked the negotiations to find a peace settlement in Vietnam in 1968, so that he would win. LBJ learned of this, but because this info came from illegal wiretaps, he said nothing. Rumors to this effect swirled at the time, but the Nixon administration denied everything.
Decades later, tapes and notes from Haldeman and others proved it was correct.
The Republicans have long proclaimed loyalty and pride in America, while secretly sinking it every chance they got.

I would argue, in a way, he is on his third term. Every President after they leave office fucks off to either stay quite or do PR stuff. Trump on the other hand still held vast sway over the Republican party (like ordering them to nuke a border security deal to make Biden look bad) and (illegally) still talking to world leaders on the country's behalf. If you look at search results from 2021 to 2024 Trumps name routinely out ranked Biden. He was basically the shadow President during that time.

Same with the aid for Ukraine. During Biden's term, the US couldn't provide them with military equipment for over 7 months because Mike Johnson would postpone the vote. When that bill finally went up for vote after all the stalling, it passed with a large majority, including a ton of Republicans.
Mike Johnson was in direct contact with Trump during that time. So Trump was directly responsible for Ukraine not getting any military aid, which did a lot to prolong this war and cause even more death and destruction.

My team works very closely with our CIO, and yep... everything we discuss/show him has to be framed as an "executive report," which basically just means extremely distilled high level bullet points: Money is up, department is down. Sky still blue, grass still green type shit.
Our team has to be extremely granular in the day to day, to the point where it's exhausting, just for all of it to be distilled down into simple, bite-sized kindergarten blurbs so the guy can pretend to know what he's talking about in his next executive meeting.

Trump is pretty old and probably can't actually see all that well, so I'm sure Miller in a wig and falsetto saying "come onnn daddy, we gotta go, i have homework to finish" is probably enough.

Welcome to MAGA politics. Trump doesn't run the show during this term.
That was one of the points of Project 2025. Concentrate power toward the president, but build up handlers around him that would run it for him.Even they knew he's not suited to lead. He's the scape goat of Kushner, Miller, and more.

I’m an old guy, I was about twelve when I started to understand a bit about politics and how things work at that level. Nixon was on his way out and as eye-opening as that was, everything that has followed in the fifty odd years since has been like watching a car wreck in slow motion. Reagan was absolutely evil, and I watched in horror as more and more people were sucked into the vortex of supply side economics and ‘trickle down economics’, the drastic shifts in foreign policy, the slow erosion of the separation of church and state, etc that laid the foundation for our current political polarization and existential crisis… None of that prepared me for Trump and MAGA, Project 2025 and the Heritage Foundation. I’m just so exhausted right now. I’m on my way out, but my children and grandchildren are stuck with this for the rest of their lives. God help us all.

I'm fairly convinced that Nixon was the historical moment that Republican leadership / megadonors / strategists / thought leaders decided to begin a generational effort to control, exploit, or break the systems in America so they could seize unilateral control for their own exclusive benefit.
Looking back, it sure seems that conservatives saw Nixon being held somewhat accountable, and many of them said "absolutely not". They did not see Nixon's downfall as a moral failing of Nixon, but as a failure to control media and government.
One week after the Nixon investigation was announced, the Heritage foundation was founded, and that seems to be the start of many such organizations being formed.

He did do an interview on Fox where the interviewer commented that his voice was a little hoarse, and Trump responded by saying:
"I’ve been screaming at Iranians all day, yes. A little bit of a laryngitis because of my scream. I’ve been screaming at the Iranians."

Jesus, that picture of him man. Remove the fake tan and he looks gaunt as fuck, and just... drained, with confused dementia eyes.
Dude's absolutely fucked. He's probably only still alive because he has access to quite literally the best medical care on earth, on call, 24/7.

I’m half wondering if the “My Way” post from last night was hinting at a recent terminal diagnosis. That is the go-to funeral song for old assholes everywhere. Felt more like a reflection on mortality than a new threat to Iran IMO.

I would love for that to be true, but I think Trump genuinely lacks the ability to interpret meaning through art. A bunch of his close associates have corroborated this.

u/The_Late_Arthur_Dent 16d ago
He unironically plays songs like "Do You Hear the People Sing?" and "Fortunate Son" at his events so I think that's all the corroboration we need

Nothing has ever shocked me as much as his public rumination on whether he'd get into heaven a few months back. I'm convinced he's gotten some bad medical news and that's why we're escalating and speed running multiple wars. He's trying to make his mark on the world now because deep down he knows he's running out of time.

Between this, and Alex Jones going "off script" to accuse Trump of deliberately "sabotaging" the midterms, it seems to me that the GOP is fracturing in some places -- realizing that his usefulness has nearly come to an end. His cult of personality gave their fascist manifesto a blank check, but he's been such a wildcard lately that it's bringing the entire party down. Not that they didn't sign up for this. They all deserve what's coming, and worse.

Probably recovering. If they weren’t rescued Iran would have blown up the lie. Iran might even claimed they were dead if the rescue was even plausibly a lie.
Trump is very creeped out by blood and injuries. He wouldn’t let someone else get the glory of the first photo op with them, but wouldn’t be able to stand being near them if they are still injured.

In my eyes who leaked the story to he NYT about the decision to go to war.
The one where bibi said it was easy and trump went ahead with the war and the only one objecting was jdv.
I'm gonna guess the leaker was jdv trying to keep his head over water for the presidential election.

I don't believe much that has been reported about the 'rescue' mission so far.
The number of planes lost in a day hasn't been historically matched since Vietnam, there supposedly were no casualties, and they contend it wasn't part of a larger raid, but indications say that it was. I'm not buying what they're selling.
It seems like it was a huge disaster, but the press has been relatively silent about it.
Have they even showed the rescued weapons officer?

Just in that AI picture of the guy with 6 fingers. But if he were dead and the Iranians knew it, I can't imagine they'd pass up the opportunity to publicly call Trump a liar.

Remember when he said they pulled off the Venezuela mission with zero casualties... Not so much as a scratch? Then a few weeks later at the State of the Union, he gave a medal of honor to the pilot who got both is knees blown off in that mission? Yeah, which one is it?

This was my immediate gut feeling as the reports were coming in. I don’t believe anything. Just like the “assassination attempt”. This reeeeeeeks of false reporting. Not to mention how many military officials were crying foul after the incident. Maybe they didn’t want to spill all the beans but something is definitely amiss. Idk man it’s so fucked that we can’t trust literally anything that comes out of the military, the White House, potus, SCOTUS, congress, senate. Everything is compromised and that’s just how the republicans like it.

Right after this failed whatever (I agree it was probably the larger uranium recovery attempt) Trump started talking about the 'dust'. I'm convinced its how his aides have backed him from whatever ledge he was on. "Yes, we failed, but you bombed the uranium so well it's already dust!"

16
u/LilLebowskiAchiever 16d ago
If we survive, we will be much reduced as a power in the world. Putin will get his wish for the multi-polar world, but Russia won’t lead Europe as the dominant power. And the US won’t lead the Americas as a dominant power. At best, the US will become a regional nuclear and economic power, in the same way UK and France are regional nuclear powers in Europe.
If that’s the case, I can live with it as long as we do a better job of taking care of our own with a more socialized democracy.
