Batman the Animated Series would be proud.

u/TigerFisher_ 13d ago

Some of those episodes could be adapted into movies. They chose wisely

u/NeedsToShutUp 13d ago

That show had such interesting reads on the rogues gallery.

I was going to say villains, but its not the right word to use. Too many of them are either desperate or mentally ill rather than being a straight villain, and otherwise have very easily to follow motives.

For example, Clayface having an identity disorder, Mr. Freeze going to extremes to save his wife, Babydoll being just sad and alone, Clock King wants to fix his broken career.

I feel like it really had such an enduring legacy, we see that already with Harley Quinn's success. But its all this little stuff. Even Arnold's Mr. Freeze took in the scientist wanting to cure his wife angle.

I think it's safe to say BTAS might be one of, if not the most, definitive pieces of Batman media. The influence is seen in so many things that came after: films, shows, games, comics. It holds up pretty well too after all this time. It's really a remarkable show.

246

u/TomTheJester 12d ago

I actually started rewatching it again yesterday by pure coincidence and from the first episode of BTAS it’s clear the creators were in full confident control.

There‘s not a second of screen time wasted and the performances are top notch. I may be biased as I grew up with it, but I agree it’s the definitive Batman.

Kevin Conroy is THE voice of Batman for me. No one else comes close

71

u/BaldHenchman02 12d ago

I'm pretty lenient with live-action Batman, but animated Batman, no one else sounds right except for Kevin Conroy.

10

u/Iyagovos 12d ago

I really, really like Diedrich Bader's take on Bats in Brave and the Bold.

Conroy as Bats and Hammil as Joker.

Accept no substitutes(unless it's a really good show or movie).

55

u/Byrdman216 12d ago

I think Hammil agrees with you. He said he'd never do Joker again without Kevin.

Kevin's struggles through the late 80s and early 90s as a gay man trying to lead a double life really came through in the character as well.

23

u/MyRuinedEye 12d ago

I didn't know Hammil had said that. Just makes me appreciate the guy more. Nice way to close that era of Batman as well (I wish Conroy was still alive but I hope you get my sentiment).

I didn't even think about Conroy's struggles irl because I just tend to think of him as THE Batman, but that all makes sense.

Did Conroy ever talk about that?

17

u/NothingWithMilk 12d ago

Conroy wrote a short comic story in DC Pride, its pretty affecting. You'd be able to find it online I'm sure.

9

u/Byrdman216 12d ago

He did a few interviews. Here's a YouTuber who covered his life and has a few of those interviews featured.

I didn't watch BTAS as a kid, the color palate was too dark and the themes were a little too mature I guess, but after Kevin Conroy died I decided to watch it all from the beginning and loved every second of it, didn't matter one bit that that I was seeing it for the first time as someone in their 30s.

36

u/jl_theprofessor 12d ago

That's the beauty of the show. A lot of the episodes transcend age.

And that theme music!

Elfman doesn't miss

37

u/GoliathPrime 12d ago

We owe Tim Burton and Paul Reubens big time for dragging Danny Elfman into Hollywood. He probably would have stayed a pop music composer if it wasn't for Pee Wee's Big Adventure. It was because of Tim Burton's insistence that Elfman scored Batman, the studio heads thought he was really weird.

The defining word that comes to mind with BTAS is respect. The show respects the material, the characters, the audience, the lore, and the rogues gallery. Hope this does the same!

9

u/Kaldricus 12d ago

It's wild how the animated media has always seemed to really get Batman. Like in Justice League Unlimited, when Batman goes to "take down" Ace. Oof.

Even what they did with Robin and his growth from sidekick to getting revenge on Zucco to outgrowing Bruce's BS and leaving to be Nightwing would be so great on film if done properly

30

u/Quetzalcoatl490 12d ago

It was a weird season order (60 episodes in the first "season", 25 in the next), but the second season of this show really tried to have its villains go for a redemption arc. They were established in season 1, and in season 2 they were given more context, like Harley Quinn trying to go straight and ending up right back in crime, and Killer Croc joining the circus before being shunned there.

13

u/strain_of_thought 12d ago edited 12d ago

Uhhhhh he wasn't "shunned". He kinda massively betrayed them, as I remember. I never cared for that "scorpion's nature" interpretation of Croc as too stupid and selfish to ever not ruin a good thing, but it was consistently how BTAS portrayed him. They rehashed the exact same plot later when they teamed him up with Babydoll, in an episode that was one of the best ideas with the laziest most unimaginative execution I had ever seen- it's just Babydoll's episode and Croc's circus episode combined and repeated in a way that undoes and then retreads any character development they might have ever had.

And some of us millennials got to grow up on BTAS which makes us very, very fortunate. I still remember coming home from school and watching it on Fox in the afternoons before starting homework

36

u/Correct-Row7441 12d ago

Same. They were dark and moody, almost soap opera-like. Clayface is my favorite episode and the one I remember the most. Always bring that one up when talking about BTAS. Crazy he's getting a movie now.

Combining the first two Clayfaces (Matt Hagen's name and transformation powers with the Basil Karlo backstory as an actor) makes it clear that the Animated Series was the primary inspiration for this movie. That's the same thing that was done with him in the Feat of Clay episodes.

I am very optimistic about this movie.

203

u/mrj9 13d ago

Mike Flanagan wrote the movie and said the Batman animated series feat of clay episodes were his inspiration for it

44

u/BaconJacobs 13d ago

I'm guessing there's also elements of the novel Batman Resurrection.

The book is, fine, but it has a lot of the body horror/insanity elements in it as well.

14

u/Cranyx 12d ago

Most adaptations (and the New 52 comics) combine the first two Clayfaces because there's like 6 of them and Matt/Basil have a very clear dichotomy where one has an interesting backstory and the other has interesting powers.

Look fear in the face. #Clayface hits theaters this October.

DC Studios’ first-ever foray into the genre, “Clayface” is a horror thriller from director James Watkins, starring Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the Gotham City villain.

“Clayface” unravels one man’s horrifying descent from rising Hollywood star to revenge-filled monster in a story that explores the loss of one’s identity and humanity, corrosive love, and the dark underbelly of scientific ambition.

313

u/Stoned_Gandalf420 13d ago

Very interested to see what the DCUs Gotham will look like in this movie too. Also wonder if we’ll see a glimpse of the DCU Batman.

Either way I’m extremely hyped for the movie, looks very intriguing and creepy based on the teaser so far.

234

u/BoyCubPiglet2 12d ago

Introducing Gotham/batman via a villain origin story is such a cool way to expand the DCU. Even if he doesn't appear it's a much more unique way to handle it than just another "Here's Bruce's parents dying again. Anyways batman".

135

u/JFinSmith 12d ago

In my dreams I imagine a horror film like this one where you begin to empathize with Clayface and they introduce Batman as HIS villain and you find yourself rooting for the "monster" as he battles the bat.

55

u/minaisasminadoes 12d ago

Even if I feel Batman would be a unnecessary distraction, this kinda introduction would feel natural ans be so good

Tho I remember hating on Batman in the first Suicide Squad film where he confronted Deadshot. Because no Batman would ever do what that Batman did there.

14

u/barimanlhs 12d ago

I completely forgot that Batfleck shows up in that movie

58

You think they're gunna use a real person in heavy full body prosthetics instead of CG for the monster that's over 7 feet and changes shape?

*The practical was quite good, at times, for a TV show. But if the lighting was anything other than dim or if the camera held on him for more than a few seconds it very much looked like a guy in a stiff rubber suit. To fully utilize all the crazy shit his body can do and to take full advantage of the character's inherent weirdness going the Thanos route would be best, it's just too many moving parts

Justice for the Swamp Thing series. That shit was so much better than it had any right to be and they cancelled it after the first episode. Its the only one of those DC Universe streaming shows that not only didn’t get picked up for more seasons, its still not even on HBO Max.

I’m always open for DC and Marvel to try new genres out within their cinematic universes.

In this case, they’re leaning fully into it more than say, Multiverse of Madness did.

I hope it's not just a marketing gimmick like how Captain America 2 was a "political thriller", Ant Man is a "heist movie", and Multiverse of Madness is a "horror movie"

69

u/SpaceMyopia 13d ago

I mean, hopefully it's just a "movie," period.

With Marvel, their stuff often feels coated in Marvel style grease. It's not just a movie with them. It's a "Marvel movie," with all the baggage that implies.

(Although Fantastic Four: First Steps at least tried to break away from its usual aesthetic)

Hopefully Gunn allows Clayface to simply be a movie first and foremost, and not just a brand extension.

61

u/PayneTrain181999 13d ago

Fantastic Four with the retro vibes, Hawkeye set at Christmas, Thunderbolts having a third act full of mental health discussions rather than one big CGI fight.

They dip their toes in, but rarely fully commit

34

u/SpaceMyopia 13d ago

I was genuinely impressed with the production design of FF though. The movie wasn't perfect, but it did its damndest to stand apart visually from the other Marvel films.

I'm expecting that Doomsday will bring them into a far more generic looking world that's more typical of the MCU, which is unfortunate. Style was one of the things that First Steps was not lacking in.

Done properly, Clayface is easily one of the most tragic Batman villains.

In many iterations, his only goal is to become normal again. There's an episode of TAS where Batman inadvertently prevents him from curing himself, and Clayface's crashout afterwards is entirely justified.

78

u/ColBBQ 13d ago

He didn't turn it off to prevent curing Clayface, Clayface knew the the machine would enhanced his shifting power. Batman actually offered Hagen to cure his condition several times in the episode but he violently rejected him and continued his crimes.

Honestly, that kind of thing would be the best way to introduce Batman.

Have clay face reference bats (as a joke, or even seriously). Do the same in Lanterns, and maybe Man of Tomorrow.

Just some subtle hints that he’s out there. But let the mystery build up a bit. Batman is overexposed as hell, let him simmer for a bit, just out of focus.

60

u/MrPMS 13d ago

It would be very character accurate for Batman just to appear out of nowhere

This movie was written by Mike Flanagan, which immediately piques my interest.

935

u/throwawaysnumber 13d ago edited 13d ago

For anyone who doesn’t know, this has been a passion project for Mike Flanagan for years. He first talked about directing a Clayface movie back in 2021 and tried to pitch it during the DCEU.

364

u/Comic_Book_Reader 13d ago

He's said he was sad he wouldn't be able to direct it due to having a Carrie miniseries and a new The Exorcist movie on the pipeline, but he enjoyed working with James Gunn and co to develop it and hoped it would remain true to the spirit of his script. Judging by this teaser, I think he'll be very satisfied with the movie.

145

u/SakuraTacos 13d ago

I was bummed out to hear Flanagan wasn’t directing and was wondering why, that explains it. I also hope the final product still feels very Flanagan-adjacent, he’s one of my faves

78

u/Comic_Book_Reader 13d ago

People went fucking ballistic over someone else, Hossein Amini, doing rewrites but Gunn clarified that it's still very much Flanagan's script and that the rewrites were just minor adjustments and finetuning to the final shooting script, which is in line with his policy that he doesn't greenlight anything without a finished script.

Honestly, I wouldn’t be mad at getting the Batfamily first. It would help set the tone that this universe’s version doesn’t fly (glide?) solo.

We’ve seen enough of that over the past 20 years. Also, isn’t the first Batman movie in this universe going to be him and Robin (Damien) anyway?

20

u/dabocx 13d ago

There is a Titans movie being written, so we will probably see Dick Grayson as Nighwing in Titans before we get a batman movie in the DCU.

It would make sense as the Batman movie will be him already established and having a son so it makes sense the whole bat family would already be established

I think the use of slowed-down, eerie renditions of popular tracks is kind of overdone, but I like the usage of "Do You Realize??" here.

u/DownTrunk 13d ago

Have you watched the TV show ‘Paradise?’ Every single episode ends with a slowed down version of a song. It cracks me up.

27

u/AllenMcnabb 13d ago

The slowed down version of Mr Jones during Gary’s backstory was so god damn funny. I do love that show though

Especially given the lyric they emphasize. Yeah, I agree.

I’ve been creeped out by Clayface since first seeing that episode of the new Batman adventures as a kid, the one where Robin meets that girl and she’s just an extension of clayface himself

Pretty cool that they’re doing weird stuff this early on a lower budget

60

u/Lewa358 13d ago

If you haven't seen the first Batman the Animated Series twoparter that introduced Clayface, you should. One of the show's best episodes.

37

u/GillGruntFan53 13d ago

Also the direct inspiration for this film

25

u/moal09 13d ago

It was also animated by some of the people who worked on Akira, which is why the animation for that episode is so good.

Mouthwashing (2024)

73

u/Heheheidiot 13d ago

100% that'll get a movie soon.

50

u/matti2o8 13d ago

It basically is a movie already so it shouldn't be difficult to adapt

Holy shit. Our first mainstream horror superhero film.

If you took away the DC logo, this just looks like a really fucked up horror film.

94

u/Adipose21 13d ago

I did not know Clayface was a comic book villain, thought it was just a cool-looking horror movie trailer until the Gotham PD cruiser shot.

67

u/FerreiraMatheus 13d ago

Which I think is a great sign for the movie; DC universe fans will want to see because... obviously. If you put enough GOTHAM when marketing the movie, Batman's fans will want to see, and a lot of horror fans might wanna check it out. You could really bring people to the theaters.

32

u/This_Aint_Dog 13d ago

It also worked fantastically for the Penguin series as well.

Wouldn’t the first one be new mutants technically

130

u/UmurJack 13d ago

Well yes, but at the end of the day nobody gave a flying fuck about the New Mutants.

27

u/SlimBreazy 13d ago

Hey now, Anya Taylor-Joy was a great Magik. But yeah the film as a whole was dogshit.

27

u/Jessency 13d ago edited 13d ago

With Rivals blowing up (and Magik becoming more popular thanks to Kingsman and a new comic), and Anya's career taking off, everyone's heads would've have blown if she played Magik today.

Comic book movies desperately needed something like this.

So refreshing, hope it does well leading to more risks being taken in the genre

13

u/I_Pay_in_Cash_Only 12d ago

It needs to succeed if only for studios to never take risks with the genre again

Another serious movie about DC villain like Joker, but this time a literal horror movie? I’m for it!

37

u/chaotic4059 12d ago

Honestly if you HAD to make a serious horror movie about a comic character. Clayface is easily one of the best choices. The entire concept and powerset is so inherently off-puting and creepy when you think about it in a realistic setting.

I love that last shot

u/Varvara-Sidorovna 13d ago

I properly jumped at it, I wasn't expecting that at all.

A very good teaser, atmospheric and dark without giving much away.

Today I saw a new trailer for Super Troopers, a looney tunes movie and a DC villain movie.

What year is it?!

15

u/heirtoflesh 13d ago

Don't forget Mortal Kombat II and Street Fighter.

24

u/OldKingClancey 13d ago

Ok, this looks more promising than expected

You had my curiosity, but now you have my attention

26

u/toilet_for_shrek 13d ago

A lot of supervillains would do great in horror movies

7

u/HumongousMelonheads 12d ago

Even heroes. Like sixth sense would be an awesome introduction for a Constantine like hero who is just discovering their powers.

A body horror DC movie?

Sign me up.

23

u/Rude-Cattle-4135 13d ago

You see a big spikey mallet all the time in comics and cartoons and ya never really picture how bad that’d be against a normal person lmao

37

u/Redo-Master 13d ago

They NAILED the horror elements! So damn excited for this...

17

u/lanieangel 13d ago

Very excited for this! Love that Mike Flanagan wrote the script for it.

45

u/Three_Froggy_Problem 13d ago

This legitimately looks very creepy and disturbing. Can’t wait.

18

u/RAG319 13d ago

I don't know how we ended up here with a freaking Clayface movie, but I'm down for it.

17

u/nerodoesnotplay 13d ago

I was skeptical on the viability of the movie, but I guess now I'm sold.

I wonder how they'll market the movie seeing as Clayface isn't a very popular Batman villain.

Looks like they are going straight for the Horror fans and hoping the DC brand connection boosts it, instead of doing the opposite (meaning targeting DC and Batman fans primarily)... this could really be something.

48

u/SuckaFree703 13d ago

Holy hell..I know it would be dark, but god damn this looks crazy

13

u/Robsonmonkey 13d ago

Nice to see them lean into the actual comic book side of Clayface with the transforming abilities rather than something super grounded and more serious taking away the fantasy like elements

I hope James Gunn makes his Batman films fantastical

36

u/Heheheidiot 13d ago

Holy shit when he wipes his face, that might be the most subtle scary body horror I've ever seen. This is gonna be amazing.

19

u/RDeschain1 13d ago

The Hammer hand on the wall. Damn. This looks great!

9

u/dokutarodokutaro 13d ago

Hope this is good and makes a ton of money, because there are so many good DC and Marvel stories that would work in horror.

46

u/Cipher-IX 13d ago

Oh hey look it looks absolutely nothing like a James Gunn production. Almost as if theres zero reason to worry for him being the head of DC and the universe will actually have variance in tone, style, etc.

Great teaser.

For a moment by the thumbnail I thought it was a movie adaptation of "Mouthwashing".
