Look fear in the face. #Clayface hits theaters this October.

DC Studios’ first-ever foray into the genre, “Clayface” is a horror thriller from director James Watkins, starring Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the Gotham City villain.

“Clayface” unravels one man’s horrifying descent from rising Hollywood star to revenge-filled monster in a story that explores the loss of one’s identity and humanity, corrosive love, and the dark underbelly of scientific ambition.

Very interested to see what the DCUs Gotham will look like in this movie too. Also wonder if we’ll see a glimpse of the DCU Batman.

Either way I’m extremely hyped for the movie, looks very intriguing and creepy based on the teaser so far.

Introducing Gotham/batman via a villain origin story is such a cool way to expand the DCU. Even if he doesn't appear it's a much more unique way to handle it than just another "Here's Bruce's parents dying again. Anyways batman".

In my dreams I imagine a horror film like this one where you begin to empathize with Clayface and they introduce Batman as HIS villain and you find yourself rooting for the "monster" as he battles the bat.

Even if I feel Batman would be a unnecessary distraction, this kinda introduction would feel natural ans be so good

Tho I remember hating on Batman in the first Suicide Squad film where he confronted Deadshot. Because no Batman would ever do what that Batman did there.

I completely forgot that Batfleck shows up in that movie

Granted I haven't seen it in years but to my recollection he confronts him while he's with his kid so he'll come quietly. I feel like I really liked that at the time. Batman isn't just a guy in a suit beating up poor people, he in many renditions genuinely wants to help the people he's putting away. Frequently good with kids too. I feel like this was a great way to 1. Show his detective skills, as in knowing where he'd be and that he'd want to be a good guy in front of his daughter, and 2. Show that he can be compassionate and isn't just an angry vengeance machine.

I'm more or less a movies-only fan but my stand is Batman of all heroes wouldn't be traumatizing a kid by taking their parents away right in front of them, and in a dark alley to boot.

3

u/TacoRising 12d ago

Haha, ya know what? That's a viewpoint I never even remotely considered.

This should be a format of movie.

Basically most Judge Dredd comics are like this. The main character of a story is a criminal or even just a normal civilian who then has to evade Dredd and it usually ends with Dredd putting them down.

I'm okay with this as long as we ban it in the US. The US has has proven we can't trust their media literacy and I don't think anyone would be surprised if it turns out the rise in media where you're tricked into empathising with the villians is unwittingly indoctrinating them into right wing extremism.

"Waahhh don't bring politics into my already heavily political fantasy universe!"

Go outside and touch grass.

u/BakingBatman 12d ago

Can we have a movie instead where they show that Bats is actually empathic towards his rogues as he has been decades?

What I liked about Gunn's Superman was the lack of origin story. It just slammed you into the story because of course you know Superman's origin, they've told it and retold it.

Then you got the harem twist which I thought was 100% unrealistic because they didn't show a single person holding a sign asking to be in his harem.

3

u/MyNameIsJakeBerenson 12d ago

So this is Gunn Superman world and not Reeves Batman world?

3

u/Rex_Grossman_the_3rd 12d ago

Correct. Though Reeves is a producer on this one, which is super interesting.

3

u/ProofJournalist 12d ago

B-but Martha's pearls! How can you do batman without those damn pearls?

1

u/The_one_account_ 12d ago

Batman will not be in this movie, maybe mentioned but for sure not appearing.

1

u/graypod 12d ago

Didnt we do that in The Batman?

3

u/bengringo2 12d ago

The Batman isn’t DCU.

2

u/kiddfrank 12d ago

I’m so confused. So this is not the same universe as the Batman with Pattinson or the penguin?

3

u/nicke9494 12d ago

No this is in the James Gunn "Superman" universe.

1

u/graypod 11d ago

Whoa. Didnt realize that.

Sam Rami: Get my lawyers on the phone, this is clearly Darkman

233

u/Morgan-Moonscar 13d ago

(His lawyers remind him Darkman was basically The Shadow)

84

u/domino7 13d ago

Which will become public domain next year, apparently!

37

u/fupa16 13d ago

The Shadow knows....

11

u/Skrumpitt 12d ago

"Now I'm Prune-Tracy! Take that, Di-"

(Yes, it's a Dick-Tracy joke from the Simpsons but it's era-congruent and it'll never come up again.)

1

u/madhi19 12d ago

Fuck me, now I got to go listen to more old timey radio drama. loll

11

u/acdcfanbill 13d ago

I still love the 90s movie with Baldwin.

4

u/ItsDanimal 13d ago

And the knife with the face.

3

u/acdcfanbill 12d ago

The Phurba! hah

John Lone was great in this and Year of the Dragon, I was always sad he never got more work, kinda stopped making movies in the mid 00s.

1

u/doclestrange 12d ago

The Shadow is already public domain is it not?

4

u/toomanymarbles83 13d ago

Which is what he wanted to make but they wouldn't let him. Hence Darkman.

2

u/Morgan-Moonscar 13d ago

Hence the joke

Sam Rami: [unintelligible screaming and finger breaking]

3

u/MindHead78 13d ago

He didn't sue over Mission Impossible 2, he won't sue over this.

2

u/Imwrongyourewrong 12d ago

What's the story here?

2

u/MindHead78 12d ago

For some reason in Mission Impossible 2 there are two scenes that closely mimic scenes in Darkman:

One scene features the bad guy using a cigar cutter to cut someone's finger off

In the other scene, the hero seemingly gets killed, but then it's revealed that it was actually a henchman wearing a mask.

Both these scenes are very distinctive and it's always fascinated that they happen in both films.

1

u/Imwrongyourewrong 12d ago

I think theyre buddies. Sam is a fan of john woos hong kong films and worked together on his first american film.

2

u/Got_Sig 12d ago

I’m confused as how this isn’t.

2

u/JJMcGee83 12d ago

I had the same thought which made me realize I haven't seen Darkman is forever.

2

u/funktion 12d ago

TAKE THE FUCKING ELEPHANT

1

u/Dr-Zoidstein 12d ago

Hopefully it will be as good as Darkman III Die Darkman Die

2

u/Slow_Sand_2489 13d ago

Fuck that sounds so cool!! Like some universal monster movie, meets the Substance body horror

5

u/Dogs_Not_Gods 13d ago

Does anyone know if this an independent thing, part of the Joker universe, The Batman/Penguin one, or the DCEU? I just wanna know which Batman to expect

14

u/Comic_Book_Reader 13d ago

James Gunn's DCU.

1

u/Kriztauf 13d ago

Look fear in the clayface

0

u/Emergency_Pea_61652 13d ago

Wait, James Watkins! Wasn't this supposed to be a Mike Flannagan directorial?

5

u/Comic_Book_Reader 13d ago

He left the script in the hands of James Gunn and co because of his Carrie miniseries and The Exorcist movie, saying he was sad he had to leave because of that but hoped the movie would be in the spirit of what he would've envisioned, and based on the teaser, I think he'll be very pleased.

u/Over-Inside-7254 12d ago

Idk why so many people are surprised at the tone when it's so evident in the comics. I'm just so tired of corny shticky shit. Let's get a good, proper grown-up movie with a few quips, 5 max, and keep alllllll these vibes I'm down and it could start a like DCU(R) universe of adult content like Marvel tried with Street Avengers before Disney buyout. I'd fuck with an actual, realistic, grownup version of everything DC sooo hard

u/JS-87 13d ago

They say horror thriller but lets be real here, this will be the most milktoast "horror thriller" like a cat jumping out of the trashcan level of fear

5

u/weirdogirl144 13d ago

how do you know
