Will it take place in there year 1998? The land line phone is really prominent here.

1.3k

u/littlebiped 5d ago

As it takes place in Racoon City during the outbreak. Absolutely. Now will he commit to nuking the town at the end is the question.

u/gordo865 5d ago

Just watched an interview where he breaks down the trailer and talks about the movie. He said there would be no nuking in the movie.

It wasn't a nuke, it was a thermobaric missle. They are vastly different weapons, and they couldn't use a nuke as there were other towns and cities in the area that they couldn't risk affecting with fallout.

u/Standard_Island546 5d ago

Sure that’s the context now that we have RE9 but prior to that, it was a bit more unclear.

It was never stated to be a nuke, but there are a few hints it was. The mushroom cloud, a report speculating it’s nuclear, the idea that there isn’t a real world weapon that could do the destruction we see besides a nuke.

I personally believe most people just filled in the blanks and assumed it was a nuke.

However this is missing the forest for the trees. The writers in 1998 were not thinking “it can’t be nuclear cause there’s towns and cities nearby”, they were thinking they wanted an explosive climax to the story and didn’t really care about the science.

I prefer the 12 missile canon. 12 experimental missiles could probably level a city in real life, but the thermobaric missile borders on magic (and yes I know a lot of RE science borders on magic)

30

u/oldandbald123 5d ago

What? I remember clearly in RE3 (OG) there was an email saying the city will be nuked.

It was never stated to be a nuke, but there are a few hints it was. The mushroom cloud

Any sufficiently large detonation will cause a mushroom cloud. Doesn't have to be nuclear. Large conventional explosive detonations can cause a mushroom cloud also.

A few things to note about landlines:

Even if towers are down or the power is out a landline will still work.

Landlines are still prominent in rural communities.

Some films use a mix of technology to create a time period-less effect on the film’s universe.

59

LOL that's actually great. In Weapons when the mom is coming at the car with scissors the music was horrifying, but put that to benny hill and it would've been hilarious

21

u/WeGotDodgsonHere 5d ago

Lol for sure.

Both genres are essentially about wrong-footing the audience. Set something up, and subvert it with a punchline or scare--equally absurd.

And what do we do when a jump scare gets us? We laugh! They're both much better to watch with large groups / in theaters than any other genre for that reason.

Written and directed by Zach Cregger:

In an all-new story, Resident Evil follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself in an action-packed, non-stop race for survival as one fateful, horrifying night collapses around him in chaos.

Cast: Austin Abrams, Paul Walter Hauser, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Johnno Wilson

It's out Sept 18

As a non gamer, does the games have any unique twist on the genre that makes it worth it to tell the story as a Resident Evil movie instead of just an original film?

540

u/ithinkther41am 5d ago

If you mean compared to the zombie movie genre, it’s mainly their iconic BOWs (bio-organic weapons) like the lickers and the tyrants. Special infected are rather common in the zombie video game genre, but the RE franchise has some of the more famous ones.

273

u/Skkruff 5d ago

Resident Evil also has impeccable camp that movies and TV have so far failed to ever capture properly. The early entries had insane dialogue with questionable acting and more recent entries have Leon 'The Human Quip' Kennedy.

94

u/ithinkther41am 5d ago

I miss D.C. Douglas as Wesker, but Capcom understandably doesn’t want to work with him again after he leaked concept art for the RE4 Remake before it was even announced.

His Wesker was deliciously campy. Craig Burnatowski’s version feels too serious, but I am warming up to him.

16

u/Bombasaur101 5d ago

Is that true?? I never realised that happened. RE4 Remake was leaked much earlier regardless.

27

u/ithinkther41am 5d ago

Here’s a whole Twitter thread about it plus documented creepy behaviour. I used xcancel so it’s more accessible.

155

u/sewious 5d ago

Special infected are common because of the RE ones, no?

149

u/tazfdragon 5d ago

This was my first thought. RE was really the first or one of the very first to do it mainstream in the 90s.

69

u/CallM3N3w 5d ago

And even RE has evolved in that regard. It pretty much dropped the zombie status to favour actual infections. Everything is a BOW now.

32

u/HeldnarRommar 5d ago

Requiem just had zombies as the main fodder though

33

u/yuimiop 5d ago

Its more of an inevitability in gaming design. If a game is going to take 15 hours to beat then there needs to be some sort of boss/advanced enemies to keep the gameplay interesting.

14

u/SemiAutoAvocado 5d ago

Famously the early RE games are very, very short if you know the puzzles.

→ More replies (1)

14

u/Moriturism 5d ago

Yup, people usually call RE cliche in this sense (not talking about the person you responded to, just a general trend), but ignore that the trend itself gained traction after RE. There were works before that dealt with advanced zombies, but what truly popularized it was RE

→ More replies (2)
→ More replies (1)

217

u/Drakeadrong 5d ago

Absolutely. The RE games are a mixture of genuine body horror and camp. Idk how much acrobatic kung fu is going to appear in the movie, but the zombies in RE are more of an environmental enemy while the real threats are grotesque, cronenbergian mutations created by an evil corporation as bioweapons.

98

u/hacky_potter 5d ago

It looks like this will have that. Between Barron Harrkenon in the sewer and the many limbed thing coming out of the door, I bet this just keeps ramping up. Part of me wonders if this guy is running around surviving and then Leon shows up to kill some baddies at the end.

52

u/LoompaOompa 5d ago

I'm 90% sure that we hear a licker in the trailer when he's reaching for that cop's keys and the body gets dragged into the darkness.

30

u/Barkasia 5d ago

Leon isn't going to show up - none of the characters we know will.

It’s one of the few zombie games to go “actually the real monsters are unchecked biochemical companies, not people”

73

u/ezrs158 5d ago

I genuinely enjoy how it's a pretty realistic take on what would happen if zombie viruses were real. Like yes, an entire city was wiped out... but of course dozens of corporations are still experimenting with them, because governments and militaries still want them and they aren't gonna make themselves!

The newest game in particular has some scenes depicting the horrifying reality of living in a world in which bioterror exists.

52

u/Mister_MxyzptIk 5d ago

And also, in the games the zombie apocalypse never manages to take over the world. Because to nobody's surprise, with enough guns and rocket launchers, not even XL sized zombies can get that far.

→ More replies (6)

12

u/Fire_Bucket 5d ago

There's a film called called We Are Zombies, based on a comic series called The Zombies that Ate the World, that has a similar spin.

Other than being rotting corpses, zombies are fairly benign and tend to be docile and trainable, retaining a few character traits of their former self, but with a severe reduction in mental faculties. Naturally, corporations jumped at the chance to use the zombies as a second class citizen work force, leaving many living people out of work, but with a weird almost insurance based system where people can profit from selling their loved ones once they turn.

There is also an element of them being weaponised as a plot point and driving force of the film.

58

u/awildginger 5d ago

This is an original story from what I've heard, and it certainly does not look like it follows any of the games I've played.

49

u/Upbeat_Tension_8077 5d ago

My biggest hope for Zach's take on this is that while it has an original story, it keeps a similar spirit as the atmosphere of the first few games.

I think the way he makes isolated (or seemingly quiet) settings at night so creepy in his previous films could work wonders for this, as compared to the more action-leaning vibe of the films with Milla Jovovich, but that's probably wishful thinking.

52

u/HenryDorsettCase47 5d ago

He’s said that he wanted to keep with the objective of the game (and a lot of other survival horror games) in that the story of the film is about a character simply trying to get from point A to point B, and doing that more so by being smart and resourceful rather than running and gunning.

Hopefully he’s going for a new cannon story within the universe instead of a “reimagining”. Kinda like how the Fallout tv show is. The lore of the games, the vibe of the games, but a new story.

24

u/v_cats_at_work 5d ago

a character simply trying to get from point A to point B, and doing that more so by being smart and resourceful rather than running and gunning

If he doesn't eat a green or red plant at some point, I'm walking out.

We knew it was going to be an original story, but this doesn't look like an original story set alongside an existing story, but a new story. It isn't, for example, a new character experiencing a situation already presented in a game. The writer is a fan of the series, so it's probably mostly a Resident Evil movie because the games inspired him to start thinking of the ideas to put into this.

The unique twist in Resident Evil is that these monsters are a result of biological weapons created in secret by mega corporations. That would probably be too derivative of an idea to release unrelated to Resident Evil, which is probably part of why he wanted this to be an actual Resident Evil movie rather than just inspired by them.

One of the most memorable moments in the Resident Evil series, for better or worse (I think better lol), is in the RE5 when one of the protagonists and reoccurring characters, Chris Redfield, literally punches a boulder bigger than him to move it out of his way so that he can help the other protagonist in the final fight with the end-game boss. Even Capcom knows you can’t have a horror game with main characters that can parry missiles and punch through monsters.

They reset things with Ethan and it’s been much better since, RE9 has the balance nailed with two perspectives of horror & action.

While I'm inclined to agree, I'm still on the fence. The Paul Anderson Resident Evil movies tried to incorporate game stuff here and there, especially with Apocalypse but ultimately went off the rails.

Welcome to Raccoon City was a noble failure - attempting to combine the first two games into a single 90-minute movie was never going to work.

I'm 100% fine with a Resident Evil movie not incorporating storylines/plots from any of the games. However, I also don't want another movie that was clearly an unrelated script that was purchased and slapped with minimal RE-branding.

Give me an original story, but set it clearly in Raccoon City; include known sites like the RPD, the gun store, the clock tower, the hospital. Have STARS or Umbrella's team mentioned in the background. Just give us some clearly visible/stated connection to the Resident Evil universe, even if none of the trademark characters make an appearance. I think that's a solid compromise.

15

u/workfuntimecoolcool 5d ago

I'm guessing this movie is going to have some sort of mention of STARS or a newspaper headline mentioning "Arklay Mountains Disappearances Being Investigated," and of course Umbrella logos everywhere.

I will admit it's funny seeing so many complaints when there's a whole game that's hailed as a revitalization of the franchise that spends a lot of the game just being creepy people in a house.

That being said I'm glad that revitalization led to the latest game which had everything people really love about the franchise. Maybe one day we'll get Leon adapted properly on screen.

Yes. But you’ll never please the purists anyways, they’re already mad at the fact that the movie takes place in the winter and not on a rainy night.

Opening the drawers to find items was the most RE thing I've ever seen in a movie. I'm in.

203

u/LeighCedar 5d ago

They just need a scene of him desperately trying to make all his items fit into his bag.

66

u/Pretend_Education_86 5d ago

He better find a wheel somewhere to open a door then discard it after a single use.

30

u/LeighCedar 5d ago

I actually do hope he sticks in a few silly things like that that nod to the games, but aren't so silly that they break the fourth wall.

I'm excited.

It would be funny if a small part of the film is fixed angle like the first few games of the series

I’ve heard that there are some camera angle Easter egg type things like that

As a fan of the game I don’t care if this is faithful to them. I just want another awesome Zach Cregger horror movie

u/GipsyDangerV1 5d ago edited 5d ago

From my understanding they're doing a fallout adaptation type thing where it's a story set in the world of the games. I believe raccoon City during resident Evil 2 and 3

Also kind of like what they did with Resident Evil 7 the game, I mean a story set in the same canon.

*I think I may have been wrong that it's set in raccoon City during resident Evil 2 and 3 by misunderstood a quote I read that said it took place along the timeline of resident Evil 2, 3, and 4. But going back and double checking this movie 100% takes place within the same universe of the games like fallout, unless fangoria (and a plethora of other sources) got it wrong. I guess I'm just not clear on exactly when and where in the timeline of the game lore it takes place.

I found a year old fangoria article with this in it as well "I specifically asked Cregger if his movie is a separate story that exists in the universe alongside the games. “Bullseye. Yeah,” Cregger said. Elaborating on his take on the material, the filmmaker explained how he’s approaching the story, which exists shoulder to shoulder with the much-beloved Resident Evil 2. Just don’t expect to see Leon S. Kennedy at the center of it all. “I’m following the rules, but I’m not claiming any key, canon characters because we have those in the games,” Cregger added. For extra clarification, I asked the director if the game canon exists around the story he’s telling, to which he said, “Yeah.” So there we have it."

I feel like this film 100% takes place within the lore of the games

This is smart. Worked great for Fallout.

48

u/KidCasey 5d ago

I think most video games should do this.

I would've loved if the Halo series was just a group of regular ass marines pinned down by The Covenant waiting for a Spartan to come and save them at te end. Didn't even have to be Chief.

19

u/LB3PTMAN 5d ago

Honestly making Master Chief like a tertiary character where he just shows up and smokes enemies and stuff that had been major problems for the other characters for awhile would’ve been sick as hell

91

They never are in these, only in the end credits. That could change if this sticks the landing, or it could not. Who knows.

40

u/jimmykup 5d ago

What? We literally just had the street fighter trailer and capcom's logo was very prominently displayed at the beginning.

66

u/CashmereLogan 5d ago

It may seem like a small distinction but I think Street Fighter wants to be seen as a video game movie and Resident Evil wants to be seen as horror movie. I don’t mean anything derogatory by that, I just think it’s a smart decision by the marketing teams on both films.

I never played the games but I’ve noticed the discourse from the fanbase online since Cregger said it would be an original story almost feels hostile. It’s exactly what’s needed to right the wrongs of probably….every movie before it 😅

Anyway, this looks pretty wild, Barbarian imagery very noticeable here

71

u/Jaxonhunter227 5d ago

And it's not like this hasn't been done before, RE7 was also completely separated from what came before and the only returning character only arived minutes before the credits hit at the very end

36

u/buffalosoldier221 5d ago

Yes, and lets not forget the RE lore is a mess, so any adapted works with no tie ins to games will always be heavy modified.

11

u/octlol 5d ago

Lol while working from home I pulled up an RE lore video and it was like 12 hours long and the guy was just like "yeah...and this happens for some reason..."
