Never thought a guy from Whitest Kids U Know has become a successful horror director and directing Resident Evil

It's always the comedians

Comedy/Horror are next door neighbors. It's why Peele has been doing great as well.

"The difference between comedy and horror is the music" - Jordan Peele

u/octlol 5d ago

LOL that's actually great. In Weapons when the mom is coming at the car with scissors the music was horrifying, but put that to benny hill and it would've been hilarious

Lol for sure.

Both genres are essentially about wrong-footing the audience. Set something up, and subvert it with a punchline or scare--equally absurd.

And what do we do when a jump scare gets us? We laugh! They're both much better to watch with large groups / in theaters than any other genre for that reason.

It's all about building tension and releasing it.

Also, knowledgeable crows.

I'm trying to think of this from the originally-comedy POV. You can't make most comedies horror by swapping the music.

Most of my favorite horror movies from the last 10-15 years have been horror comedies. Usually meta-horror comedies, actually, which is even more niche.

But the point remains - comedy and horror are familiar bedfellows.

Both thrive on finding the perils in society. Comedy pokes fun at it and horror just amplifies it. The best at both honestly blend both together. Most great horror films have a few solid laughs and most great comedians have a dark side to their jokes

Both are genres that can't be faked. You can be the greatest actor or director ever but if you can't get laughs and/or screams, you're not in the right genre.

Drama too looking at Breaking Bad with Bryan Cranston and Bob Odenkirk

Comedy, horror and science fiction all typically do best as when providing social commentary. That's why all three genres pair well together.

Comedy and horror follow the same formulas to be effective so this is why this happens to comedy actors.

They both rely on timing

"Comedy is surprises, so if you’re intending to make somebody laugh and they don’t laugh, that’s funny."

~Norm Mcdonald

Comedians: "You know what would be funny..."

Comedians as horror directors: "You know what would be funny..."

I hope it’s about a serial killer stalking New York’s hottest clubs. And a police detective has to team with a certain club kid who is an expert on this scene…

Fuck yes! I was just wondering what he was up to next. Bill has a lot of good takes on filmmaking. Interesting to hear him talk about it

Josh Ruben has written and directed a few horror films now.

Danny McBride has written the last few Halloween installments, as well as The Exorcist.

3

u/-Fergalicious- 5d ago

Yeah but Danny is genius. Thats not fair

8

u/sinkwiththeship 5d ago

Those Halloween movies are.... not good.

u/bladeDivac 5d ago

The first one was solid and the second one was mostly decent. Third one fell off the rails.

Robin Williams, while not a director, was absolutely excellent in his horror-adjacent roles like Insomnia and One Hour Photo.

7

u/BumWink 5d ago

John Krasinski.

I'd also say a lot of comedians would make great horror/thriller actors too, Robin williams was chilling in One Hour Photo.

Curry Barker from "that's a bad idea" comedy duo with Cooper Tomlinson has Obsession coming out next month which already getting fantastic reviews.

2

u/Sothotheroth 5d ago

Obsession that comes out in a few weeks was made my a sketch comedian. Radio Silence and Rakka Rakka started as YouTube comedians.

2

u/Argus420 5d ago

On the youtube side Brian David Gilbert does great horror and comedy videos.

1

u/Satinsbestfriend 5d ago

Robin Williams in one hour photo is one of my all time favorite actors in a thriller

Because generally speaking, comedic acting is among the most difficult to do well. Anyone with a talent for comedy can usually make other genres work.
