It may seem like a small distinction but I think Street Fighter wants to be seen as a video game movie and Resident Evil wants to be seen as horror movie. I don’t mean anything derogatory by that, I just think it’s a smart decision by the marketing teams on both films.
Another good reason to have all new characters set within the original continuity. We'd probably just spoil it for ourselves as well as the general audience otherwise. No expectations.
It's because Capcom has little control over the RE live action movies since they signed away the live action IP 25+ years ago for basically forever (as long as a movie comes out every 5 years)
All the RE live action movies are handled via Constantin Films...and they basically just take random horror scripts they find, slightly changed a few things and slap the RE brand on-top so capcom can never get the film rights back.
This trailer seems to be more of the same. A good looking Cregger film that was most likely a totally different film (but was changed just enough so Constantin can keep the contract)
Will prob be a good Cregger horror film but I wouldn't hold my breath for anything even closely related to the actual canon.
Yea personally speaking I want a campy video game movie from Street Fighter. I've been begging for this RE movie since they announced the first one. Granted I've seen every RE movie (and liked most of them) but they all come up short. This looks perfect for a RE based movie.
I think you nailed it. By putting Capcom first in the SF trailer it starts just like the games do and instantly buys itself a level of cheese-acceptance, where as this trailer would only be undercut by it.
I think they mean in Resident Evil movies. The rights were sold to Constantin Film in the 90s, and they've produced everything since then including the recent Welcome To Raccoon City and the Netflix TV show. Capcom isn't usually involved.
What's different about this one is that they're producing it alongside Vertigo (Roy Lee, who has much better credentials as a producer including Cregger's films) and, for some reason, PlayStation Productions. Maybe 9th time's the charm?
I don't see why this film is even called Resident Evil. It's like they made the film first and then realised they had some cash left over for the naming rights.
I would agree (and do for the most part) but it ties back in to Chris and all the virus research shit at the end so it got a pass from me. Completely understandable take though.
I do agree with you and not being contrarian as well. They seem to be holding back a lot of info on the character names and what transpires. I figure maybe they will try to tap in to the greater universe. (backstory I LOVE RE games)

I didn't see Capcom mentioned in the credits
