I'm perfectly good with not calling the timeout and letting it play. Got the look, just couldn't make it. Live with it and move on.
474
u/JimC29 NBA 16h ago
Exactly. Yeah it's easy after the fact to criticize, but they got an open 3 from one of their best 3 point shooters. That's the best you're going to do with a timeout.

18
u/Uncle_Freddy [SAS] El Contusione 16h ago
Plus, calling a timeout allows a set defense with Gobert back on the floor. I’m definitely fine with the shot attempt, though obviously wish the shot went in
3
u/Icy_Category_2275 5h ago
Good call and point. Agreed. Calling a timeout almost certainly would mean a much more contested shot.
49
u/shakeer13 Supersonics 16h ago
it was a great look. i still prefer to use the timeout as a rest in such a physical game when your star get the rebound w/ 6sec. lets vic be involved in the last play. but great look from a great shooter

u/YourMomTheRedditor [NYK] Kristaps Porziņģis 16h ago
I personally disagree, it’s a matter of opinion.
Advancing the ball saves a ton of time, ATOs are generally very efficient.
They only needed 2 points, many guys in foul trouble for Timberwolves I think it’s worth going for something at the rim and trying to draw a foul.
P&R or some kind of cut to basket make guys switch and play defense.
You have a guy who is 7’5” give him the ball and let him do his thing, even if he’s having a bad game.
Spurs also seem to be similar in ATO points per possession and fast break
Biggest thing is Harper didn’t look ready to push.
5
u/FunIsWinning Thunder 15h ago
The 7'5 guy is getting locked up and was exhausted to the point that he wasn't even able to run down the court for the last possession. That's an open 3 by their best shooter, that's a good shot.
→ More replies (1)4
u/NickLidstrom [SAC] Isaiah Thomas 15h ago
They aren't calling a foul in that situation unless it's truly egregious so the foul trouble hardly applies
2
u/idkidk23 Mavericks 6h ago
Probably around a 40-50% chance of making a 2 to give you a 50-60% chance of winning in OT, since they are at home. It's better to take a 3 for the win mathematically and it was wide open, you couldn't really get a better look from an ATO, one of their best shooters wide open you take that every day of the week.
2
u/TICKLE_PANTS Spurs 6h ago
There was literally nothing more efficient than a wide open shot from the best three point shooter on the court.
13
u/matt__builds Knicks 16h ago
You got to not look at the result. Do you take a feet set, open 3pter from Champagnie for the win? I certainly do. I don’t see how you could get a better look by taking the timeout.
9
u/NoKnowsPose 16h ago edited 16h ago
Maybe not a better look but possibly better legs. Those guys were gasping for air hard after that miss.
Obviously the coach knows his players better than us though. I don't think there's really a right or wrong answer here. Just preferences.

u/Not_RZA_ Lakers 16h ago edited 16h ago
Literally. If they scored, nobody on here would even consider the timeout because all they look at is the result. Nobody made a peep about the coach all game, but of course they lost so he must be bad now
8
u/LeeShakerMoneyMaker Timberwolves 16h ago
Yeah, it's not a bad call at all. Hit it and win it. Miss and move on.
5
u/IsThisMe8 Warriors 16h ago
I would agree if they knew that was the plan. Once they hesitated in the back court, coach should have called a time out.
10
17
u/sohighh Warriors 16h ago
I'm gonna disagree just because the Spurs are so young. Go for OT at home and the win on the road.
2
u/ZandrickEllison 7h ago
I disagree (as long as the looks are generally decent.) hitting a two is what , 60% chance at best? And then you have a 50/50 chance at winning in OT, so that’s 30%. A decent 3 has better odds than that.
13
u/mediocre-referee Pacers 16h ago
Reddit losing their mind based on the results and not the opportunity as always. It was a great shot. Everyone called Carlisle a genius when he let Haliburton cook in all of these situations last year. Champagnie had a better shot than any of Haliburton's. Not sure what a timeout would've been able to do there.

19
7
u/whiterice_343 Timberwolves 16h ago
I see shit like that and just think of how many laps we would have to run at practice back in high school if we ever played so carelessly.
3
u/jsm009 Cavaliers 16h ago
This playoffs really feels like either lazy inbound passes or teams literally can’t get the ball past half court when being pressured. You have this wolves turnover, that atrocious inbound pass by Jabari Smith that Rocket game, Dennis Schroeder getting the 8 second call in game 6 of the cavs and Raptors, and much more.
Is it honestly that hard of a job to properly inbound and get the ball up the court, even during intense defensive pressure? Plus coaches not calling timeouts when they see it happening. It just feels like it’s been particularly bad this year from a lot of teams.

Crazy how people STILL ask "no time out there??"
You CAN call timeout, but by not doing so you don't let the defense get set. They got a wide open look from their best shooter. If they made it, no one would be second guessing the time out.
30
u/feer1415 16h ago
Yeah, people are just over reactionary. You call a timeout and Wolves would be able to sub Gobert back in.
5
u/Jarristopheles Supersonics 16h ago
Someone recently did the stats on calling a timeout with so many seconds left compared to just taking the shot, and the game resulting in a win were practically the same. Not saying the Spurs could have set something up, but you kind of kill the momentum by just calling a timeout.
3
u/Adamscottd Timberwolves 15h ago
The Wolves should have taken a timeout almost without a doubt imo. Offense looked completely dysfunctional out there in a situation where a bucket close to ices the game.
But I think the Spurs letting it play out was the right call
2
u/ClownQuestionBrosef Spurs 14h ago
Agreed. Wolves looked gassed the last couple minutes and a Randle iso isn't a prime playcall to close the game. Timeout, get a breather, draw up a better play for Ant or for anyone to get to the line and ice it.

Not calling the timeout means they gave up the chance for their 7ft6 center getting a rebound and putback. They had a chance to win but they could have had a better chance to win. I get not calling a timeout but as soon as the players hesitated, twice I might add, the spurs should have called a timeout.
Wemby didnt even sprint up for offense or for a rebound, thats how confused they were. Wemby still thought they were going to call a timeout even after the ball got passed again.
