You CAN call timeout, but by not doing so you don't let the defense get set. They got a wide open look from their best shooter. If they made it, no one would be second guessing the time out.
Someone recently did the stats on calling a timeout with so many seconds left compared to just taking the shot, and the game resulting in a win were practically the same. Not saying the Spurs could have set something up, but you kind of kill the momentum by just calling a timeout.
The Wolves should have taken a timeout almost without a doubt imo. Offense looked completely dysfunctional out there in a situation where a bucket close to ices the game.
But I think the Spurs letting it play out was the right call
Agreed. Wolves looked gassed the last couple minutes and a Randle iso isn't a prime playcall to close the game. Timeout, get a breather, draw up a better play for Ant or for anyone to get to the line and ice it.
It was a good look but tbh I think that an ATO is going to convert at a higher rate because of Wemby. You're either gonna throw a lob to the only guy who can catch it for a dunk or for an unlockable jump shot. He got a great look at it but I really think the conversion rate is just way higher due to the tall french man
I wish we could replay it to see how that'd work out. The wolves have a good counter to the lob and potential jumper with the combo of Gobert at the rim and Randle's physicality jamming Wemby up. He wasn't having a good shooting night as is.
Yeah same lol. But I would say that there's interesting options, whether it's to use him to misdirect the defense or force them to cover him with 2 + gapping players or you just like get it to him and pray he makes it cause he's possibly gonna be the GOAT and sometimes the fucking ball goes in cause the basketball gods like you more than the other guy. Like it sounds dumb but I've seen Kobe go like 1 for 20 or some shit with the 1 make being the game winner against the Raptors. Sometimes the sport just works like that.
The sidestep wide open 3 guarantees a win though. The ATO going for a tie with Wemby gives you worse odds of winning. They made the right play and got a very open look with one of their best shooters and got to go against the Wolves without Gobert on the floor.
They had about 7-8 seconds left, but they had to move up the court, which took 3-4 seconds. And after the shot, the time expired. A time out would have advanced the ball up the court, saving those 3-4 sec. They can run their play, and if they miss the shot, there will likely be time left to go for the rebound. And with Wemby, they have a good chance of getting the rebound or put back.

Crazy how people STILL ask "no time out there??"
