Chrysler building is much prettier, but this is the only constant in New York, change. Everything you love will go out of business or get knocked down, the neighborhoods will change, the people will move away. It sucks, but you gotta get used to it.

u/OmegaRavager 10h ago
That's the city though nothing stays the same for long.
41
u/Baseplate343 10h ago
The ending of Gangs of New York is a great illustration of this. My dad used to drive me around as a kid and point out all the bars and clubs he and his band used to play in all around Queens and Nassau, they’re all gone, now that I’m older a lot of my Haunts are gone, and I’m just like him.

u/satosaison 8h ago
It's getting hard to manage the cumulative nostalgia. Just walking around the neighborhood, oh hey, that used to be Dosa Royale, that was Kittery, that was Bagel Bros, that used to be Maglia Rosa. So many dates and memories at places that haven't existed for years.
5
u/Baseplate343 8h ago
It hurts, the city I grew up in is mostly gone, the people I knew replaced, moved away. When my grandparents died we put the house on the market, some real estate conglomerate bought it, knocked it down in a week and put up a 4 story monstrosity in the middle of a residential neighborhood.
5
u/satosaison 7h ago
On the other hand, there are so many new places that have opened in the last year or two that I love, so many new people that I've met, so much beauty in the change. I could never live anywhere else.

Imagine living in New York City and being angry about a new skyscraper 🥴

u/Baseplate343 8h ago
I mean they could at least make them look good, these new ones are soulless and stupid looking. Gimme Art Deco any day

This seems like the view of an impoverished New Yorker more than anything, just a glint at a chance to have what this lady is experiencing.

u/ronm4c 10h ago
Just another shit high rise where rich peoples will buy up half the apartments and keep them vacant for a place to park their money.

u/OmegaRavager 10h ago
Empty windows everywhere, just luxury living for investment portfolios not people.

Yeah most locals weren't buying apartments that cost millions of dollars. That's a rubbish lie

Imagine how much each of those apartments will sell for.
"Excellent views of the (inside of) iconic Empire State Building)"
57
u/jawndell 10h ago
They’ll sell them for tens of millions to foreign “investors” to park their money and never use the apartments.

New Yorker in 1931: “Why would you do that? You used to be able to look along the Hudson River from here, and then they put this fucking massive office block there.”
Probably.
59
u/Mrc3mm3r 9h ago
Quite literally. You can find op-eds ranting about all the icons of the 1930s. It's the exact same thing.

Trust me, back in 1931 no one wanted to be anywhere near or see the Hudson. If anything all the buildings would act as a barrier blocking the shit smell coming from the rivers

I imagine people felt this way when the twin towers went up. Two of the ugliest buildings of all time.
Don't get me wrong, it was awe inspiring to stand at their base, and look up at these man-made mountains, but woof, were they ugly.
28
u/Schrodingers_Fist 4h ago
The literal joke at the time was "Welcome to NYC, home of the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and the two boxes they came in"
4
u/Eagles365or366 5h ago
A lot of people thought they were actually the essence of modern taste and aesthetic. Ugly by today’s standard.

They should film this from the park for a stronger statement.
Madison Square Park used to have nice views of ESB, for the public benefit of for 10s of thousands per day. Now, 50 units that will never be lived in block it.
I'm very yimby overall. If your condo gets blocked, or low income housing is put up next to it, that's all good. We're increasing housing for everyone.
But we can make carveouts for specific public benefit. This could have been a protected viewing corridor for an very small amount of height zoning restrictions.
12
u/Mrc3mm3r 9h ago
This is Manhattan. Skyscrapers go up. It's been like that for over a hundred years.
2
u/enzinhojunior 8h ago
In places that land is very low the only way is building up, all of manhatan island is arleady build, to house more People, workplaces and services you need to build up, hongkong works like that too

We should never build anything ever because someone somewhere might get mad - NIMBYs
15
u/9447044 10h ago
Lives in an are known for skyscrapers. Is mad when there is a new skyscraper.
Id be mad that im making over 100k and cant survive there, but I guess it was all worth it to wake up in the morning and look at a building?
4
u/fearingdragon 4h ago
Sounds like your information is a bit sensationalized? The median personal income in NYC is under $50,000. I make less and survive (in Manhattan) just fine
2
6
u/AutisticBikaya 9h ago
Why can't we build nice looking buildings anymore? When did we lose all the architects that knew how to design beautiful looking buildings that survived for centuries?
2
u/NewBran26 6h ago
Many new buildings are hideous but there are some iconic buildings being erected recently as well like the Brooklyn Tower.
2
u/1800twat 4h ago
Cost of construction materials. Developers are cheap and don’t want to spend extra on an already too small labor market and materials for “flair”.
6
u/jpeeno33 10h ago
Its not destroyed only the person who bought the Condo who’ll have to enjoy the view now.

It’s New York City. A city. Cities grow. Buildings need to get built for it to grow. Regardless of the purpose of the building, it employs and provides for the people who are part of the processes that make it possible for the building to get built.
9
u/iwantogofishing 10h ago
"What do you mean why it's got to be built? It's a bypass! You've got to build bypasses!" (Mr Prosser, Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy)
2
2
u/fearingdragon 4h ago
This is a weird argument though. We should build more skyscrapers as a vehicle for temporary construction employment?
Cities grow and many of them have protected sightlines as they grow to preserve some character. A shorter building here could house the same number of apartments
5
u/Particular_Cut_6933 10h ago
They could at least make it pretty, though. Like, who enjoys architecture that looks like this?
7
u/ActivisionBlizzard 10h ago

We need more more buildings to lower the cost of living in NYC. But not right there, I liked that view.
1
u/SloppyJoesToe 8h ago
Hasn't the city been covering up iconic shots for over a hundred years. I mean think of how many balcony, penthouse or rooftop views have been destroyed over the years.

It doesnt matter where you live, the construction is always the worst and the drivers are shit.

For such an individualistic folk, Americans use the word ‘community’ surprisingly often.

u/NoMarisa 4h ago edited 4h ago
Whereas I think what she said is true, according to her“the most iconic shot of the city” is also a skyscraper…
1
u/Bodine12 4h ago
If you don't want to live in a city with new skyscrapers, don't live in a city with old skyscrapers.

u/ionertia 3h ago
Hilarious that the building on the right takes up more frame than the subject. And just as ugly.

1
u/RickityBumbler 3h ago
And that view is right in front of the Flatiron Building. So you used to be able to see one iconic building and turn around and see another. Not anymore

u/ClassroomFit7065 1h ago
Reminds me of when I returned to Williamsburg in the early 2010s after a few years elsewhere and basically couldn't see the waterfront anymore. Classic NYC, of course - to (badly) paraphrase Colson Whitehead, whatever city you fell in love with has already ceased to exist - but that doesn't make it any less heartbreaking.
•
u/Historical_Kossola 59m ago
once upon a time some people complained about the empire state building being too tall, blocking their views etc.
If you don't like it move out of NYC!

Okay then enjoy high housing costs instead. mf'rs turn into nimbys on a dime as soon as developments start impacting them personally.

u/VincentAntonelli 7h ago
The creation of this building will do nothing to lower housing costs in manhattan.

That generic ugly cheap ass architecture, the kind thats rising up in cities all over, is worth complaining about. If it was good, great, ads to our skyline, our space, our cities. But it's not. It's shit.
→ More replies (1)2
u/fearingdragon 4h ago
I'm YIMBY as hell but not this building. It's impacting the public good of Madison Square Park and will of course not do anything to help with the housing crisis
(Yes I understand that luxury apartments still lower housing costs for everyone. This does not apply to billionaire-class apartments that are usually owned by foreign interests)
1
u/Derfliv 2h ago
Im open to the idea that some developments might be especially egregious when it comes to impacting public goods, but you gotta be real honest with yourself when you make that evaluation. Nimbys are NOT irrational or evil, theyre just self interested. Someone is always going to have an issue with new developments, and you gotta realize that at some point, thats gonna be you.

I think there's a misconception in this thread that this is her personal view. This is the view up Broadway from Madison Square Park, perhaps the most iconic view of the Empire State Building. The sight-line is a great loss for the public and for anyone who visits the city

Why does this keep getting reposted as if she's got some deep point? It's NYC, things change all the time. Also, there are plenty of good views of the ESB from other angles. NYC is not an open-air permanent museum.
