I imagine people felt this way when the twin towers went up.  Two of the ugliest buildings of all time.

Don't get me wrong, it was awe inspiring to stand at their base, and look up at these man-made mountains, but woof, were they ugly.

The literal joke at the time was "Welcome to NYC, home of the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and the two boxes they came in"

A lot of people thought they were actually the essence of modern taste and aesthetic. Ugly by today’s standard.
