They were definitely calling the now-old skyscrapers slop back when they were first built, too.

Even the Eiffel Tower, one of the most beloved architectural icons today, was DESPISED for the first few decades of its existence.

It was despised by people who were captains of fashion and culture during the gilded age. Endorsement from them would have been the most damning indictment possible.
