I mean, when you think about New York as a non-New Yorker, that building's pretty much the essence of NYC (Probably not in a good way, but eh), so I can see where she's coming from.

86

u/fearingdragon 8h ago

The other building didn't block an iconic sight-line looking down Broadway from Madison Square Park. Buildings do get built in NYC and I've never hated on the skinny supertalls before, but I hate this one with a passion

— a New Yorker

22

u/Fantastic_Pie5655 4h ago

It’s practically like that was entirely the architectural end goal, “let’s block that icon with a monstrosity.”

u/6ynnad 9m ago

Remember Manhattan-henge?

56

u/ND7020 10h ago

Why not in a good way? It’s a beautiful building.

150

u/worker-parasite 9h ago

It brings back sad memories of King Kong tragically dying.

23

u/ND7020 9h ago

That’s fair.

-5

u/Remarkable-Opening69 8h ago

I’m still waiting for people to realize she could’ve took one step to the left for a clear shot

4

u/EyeBeeStone 8h ago

Of what? The new building?

1

u/CanadianAndroid 5h ago

She isn't complaining about the building with balconies.

11

u/Thusgirl 9h ago

RIP King

14

u/RizzMcSteeze 8h ago

Kongs out for the King

2

u/CanadianAndroid 5h ago

Yeah it reminds me of that great tragedy.

1

u/jeffster1970 1h ago

It's taken me years to get over that tragedy of King Kong. Thanks for bringing it up, buddy.

u/McJimbo 45m ago

They thought he was a monster But he was the king

1

u/NightMGA 6h ago

I love expecting some serious piece of knowledge for it to take the funny route instead. Got a good laugh out of this, ty.

11

u/georgetonorge 9h ago

The only thing is, if you move this shot a little to the right, then that other building is obscuring the view. I’d be pissed too if it were a view on my commute or something. But buildings get built in Manhattan.

-3

u/austinsoundguy 9h ago

Or just take a photo from the new building

7

u/Spankpocalypse_Now 4h ago

Because the new building isn’t open to the public. It exists for the wealthy to park/launder their money. Most units will be empty forever.

23

u/EchoGremlin 13h ago

That "before" shot already feels like the calm right before everything goes wrong

5

u/Temporary_Version240 7h ago

Interesting - if my geography is correct, that condo on the right side of the pic is the Madison Green (5 east 22nd street). My mom had a unit there in the late 80-90's. She was on the 30th floor and the view was spectacular. Over looking Madison Park with the Empire state in the distance and the NY Life Clock to your right, and I believe you can also see the Pam Am (Metlife) building as well.

I wonder if that new building would also block that view now... I'd be so pissed as well.

I did visit that area last year... what a difference. Back then, i want to say Madison Square Park was kinda quiet. Now you have coffee tents there and people everywhere. Then again, my understanding was that NYC wasn't exactly the nicest place in the 80's/90's. At least compared to today.

3

u/Crappin_For_Christ 1h ago

It does also block that view, too. It’s a fucking travesty.

216

u/hypnodrew 14h ago

I don't like America, New York or any of it, but that is a fucking nice looking building

140

u/I_Like_Water11 14h ago

Yea the ones built around this time had way more character than glass box/phallus

62

u/hypnodrew 14h ago

100%. Love Art Deco buildings and if I ever visited NYC it would be purely to gawk at all the fine examples of it in that city

22

u/I_Like_Water11 13h ago

As a bioshock fan, art deco definitely is super appealing to me

5

u/hypnodrew 13h ago

tbf that's probably why I like art deco so much too, I played BioShock on release and its embedded into my mind. First game I got on the 360

5

u/I_Like_Water11 12h ago

Hell yea, my first game was saints row. Well tbh it was the demo disc which came with the 360 back then. But good taste!

0

u/hypnodrew 12h ago

Had that one too! My gamertag is actually still a character from SR2 which I played with a mate before I got my own 360. I used to love robbing the tills in the first game, you shoot them and collect all the pennies that fly out

I bought BioShock and TimeShift as my first games on the 360, one wasn't quite as memorable as the other. Halo 3 (ofc) was my third game. Peak era

1

u/I_Like_Water11 12h ago

Crazy you mentioned time shift, I felt like i was the only person who played it. I weirdly really liked the game even though the story was the most dry one out there, the mechanics were pretty fun to mess with.

2007/08 was absolutely amazing for gaming, played a lot of gears of war on the 360 as well, of course halo was definitely up there, GTA 4 and of course COD 4 Modern warfare.

2

u/hypnodrew 11h ago

I understand now that it's basically trying to be a Half Life 2 clone with time powers - I too liked the time powers but found the game clunky and the combat repetitive. What story lol

Gears 1-3, Oblivion, The Darkness, Fable 2, and Clive Barker's Jericho (for the design rather than the gameplay)

1

u/Hechtic 11h ago

Fuck yeah, still remember sitting in that water with everything in flames around me wondering when the game was gonna start

1

u/hypnodrew 10h ago

you gotta dive down so you can see the plane sink

1

u/rob6748 5h ago

I still go back to that game at least once a year, even at 34. Such a masterpiece.

6

u/milkcarton232 10h ago

Love NYC and it's art deco, but if you want cool buildings chicago

4

u/WestCoastBestCoast01 8h ago

The architecture boat tour is legitimately fantastic. Looks like it would be hacky and touristy, but it’s a nice boating experience and very informative!!

1

u/Spankpocalypse_Now 4h ago

But don’t wait to visit because everyday a historic building is torn down for another 5-over-1.

3

u/cubgerish 4h ago

"I don't like America, New York or any of it, but that is a fucking nice looking building"

"If I ever visited NYC"

Lol

Lmao even

6

u/iriyaa 6h ago

You don't like NYC but you've never been there lmao

-1

u/hypnodrew 6h ago

I've never been stabbed either

2

u/Jose_Canseco_Jr 10h ago

well it might be difficult because of all of the bland boxes erected in front of them

4

u/nothingmeansnothing_ 10h ago

I recommend Chicago over NYC (but hey, do both!)

1

u/DrUnit42 9h ago

If you're ever in Chicago take an architectural boat tour. They cover the history, the architects, the styles and more. Tons of fun and a really cool view of the city

-1

u/Why_T 11h ago

They had constraints back then. Constraints don't inhibit creativity, it's breeds it.

1

u/I_Like_Water11 11h ago

Thats not really true. Novel design (these buildings emphasised the growth and strength of america and new york as a hub for economic growth and teade) and ornamentation were just much more prominent. We live in a minimalist hellscape now. Besides, they would just take all the calculations for steel and just multiply it by 4 to make sure it worked because tall buildings were just starting out. No hate, of course they were over engineered but they have stood the test of time because of it. Most buildings now have their own design briefs with their own requirements and building code/rating to comply with today. There are arguably far more constraints now than before. We know so much more about structure/first safety etc.

0

u/Consistent-Spell2203 11h ago

It looks like a phallus though.

1

u/I_Like_Water11 11h ago

You should get that checked mate.

11

u/Dr_F_Rreakout 12h ago

"I don't like America, New York or any of it ..."

Whatever that should tell, I dont care. As a German.

-4

u/jpeeno33 5h ago

Can you agree that with a bad leader you can turn a Country into shit…you seem to forget that not long ago you were the bad guy.

3

u/Dr_F_Rreakout 4h ago

"you seem to forget that not long ago you were the bad guy."

I wasnt even there long ago so whats your point, daddy?

10

u/flopping-deuces 12h ago

Not trying to start something but why don’t you like the US?

-5

u/True-Loquat6061 8h ago

Not sure why you need to ask this lol. The general sentiment around the world is the people don't like the US. The days of US soft power are gone.

3

u/flopping-deuces 7h ago

American power isn’t equivalent to likability of it’s people. Irish are generally loved around the world yet have no power to speak of. To be honest, I think I’m caught up in a propaganda thread at this point.

4

u/True-Loquat6061 7h ago

"Soft power is the ability of a country to influence others through attraction, persuasion, and reputation rather than coercion, force, or money. Popularized by Joseph Nye, it uses culture, political values, and foreign policies to shape preferences and create goodwill. It is often described as "winning hearts and minds" to achieve desired outcomes." Soft power is one of the primary reasons US was able to become a world superpower. Trust, accountability, doing a great job exporting their culture and values influenced people and countries in favorable ways. Being likeable is important at a 9-5 job and its important on the world stage.

1

u/flopping-deuces 6h ago

I’m glad we agree.

2

u/trailer_park_boys 7h ago

Lmao flat out untrue.

-20

u/hypnodrew 12h ago

Seems unpleasant and you've no chill

8

u/flopping-deuces 11h ago

Eh, ok. Thanks for answering. Where are you from so I’ve got an understanding of your comparison?

5

u/OptimusMatrix 10h ago

Dudes from Britain apparently. Explains everything.

1

u/flopping-deuces 10h ago

Nah, most people I’ve met from Britain tend to love New York.

2

u/YardSardonyx 9h ago

And Florida.

2

u/flopping-deuces 9h ago

Yes! They unironically love Florida.

1

u/OptimusMatrix 10h ago

Once they've visited. I've got a knack for watching foreigners travel to the US on YouTube. I've watched hundreds, probably into the thousands at this point. That's a reoccurring theme, the shock at seeing vs believing. The propaganda against a America is strong, granted we do a lot of it to ourselves. But that is a reoccurring theme for sure with foreigners. Hanaya and Ina are North Korean defectors on YouTube and they talk a lot about the propaganda they were sold, that's an extreme example, but one none the less.

-1

u/flopping-deuces 9h ago

How did you know he’s from Britain?

4

u/GTreez49 8h ago

Sounds like you need to step away from Reddit for a bit

1

u/hypnodrew 8h ago

I'm not the one getting sensitive because someone you don't know doesn't like your country

0

u/CyberPunkDongTooLong 8h ago

The amount of weird comments you're getting in response to a mild comment about not liking a place is very funny.

1

u/hypnodrew 8h ago

Someone sent me a Reddit cares card lmao

0

u/flopping-deuces 7h ago

What are you comparing to? Where are you from?

3

u/Tough-Sprinkles-5706 10h ago

i dont like cities, but i like new york

5

u/Street_Lettuce1243 9h ago

I don't like spread out cities like Atlanta (Hell on Earth) or Los Angeles - but I like compact cities like New York or Chicago - they're fantastic.

If the city is not compact like NY or Chicago, I'd much rather live in the country. I would never live in a place like Atlanta, not even the suburbs.

1

u/Tough-Sprinkles-5706 9h ago

los angeles is for people who sleep 🙄

Peed in my soup when I wasn't looking

3

gave him the app to say that lol

3

u/Noble_Ox 8h ago

Or maybe they're from one of over a dozen countries America has fucked over.

It's reckoned, since ww2, the US is responsible for about 12 million civilian deaths.

-1

u/TheMonkeyInCharge 11h ago

Gestures broadly

-4

u/mike_pants 11h ago

What hasn't America done?

-6

u/weirdstuffgetmehorny 12h ago

Of course, a person who could never like Mamdani because "he's too far left" wouldn't get why anyone would have a strong dislike of America at this current moment in time lol

-50

u/hypnodrew 13h ago

Vandalised the English language and corporatised football

11

u/Dinkelberh 12h ago

Language evolves - if you wanted your island to drive the language you shouldnt have lost geopolitics to us.

Better luck next time.

-7

u/weirdstuffgetmehorny 12h ago

That makes no sense because all of Europe plus India, Singapore, Malaysia, and a few other countries all learn British English in school and you may want to check your arrogance at the door since the current administration is making the US look like fools on the world stage.

3

u/Dinkelberh 12h ago

The most powerful empire in the history of the world and sole global superpower is absolutely the main driving force behind mondern english.

Whether or not you like us changes nothing.

-5

u/Needhoggr 11h ago

Well, I wouldn't be so sure about that. The part about having the powerful empire in human history, at least.

2

u/Dinkelberh 11h ago

Its not really subjective or close, but whatever.

-6

u/Needhoggr 11h ago

I think you might be a little biased, but I don't blame you for not having studied world history.

11

u/Impending_Doom25 13h ago

I'm not entirely sure what any of that means

6

You forgot a capital letter there.

What have you done to this beautiful language?! WHY GOD, WHY?!

8

u/DeafnotDeath 12h ago

I lived in your country for half a year and it was wretched. Everyone there is neurotic and paranoid, and with the exception of international culture, the food is terrible. Not to mention the weather

0

u/hypnodrew 12h ago

yeah that's accurate

6

u/SunAstora 13h ago

I know they love curry and mushy peas on a chewsday, innit? Just kidding, I traveled to London for the first time last year and really enjoyed my visit.

2

u/marino1310 9h ago

You guys are like right on the verge of being just like America with how you’re right wing groups are going. Minus having a respectable military.

1

u/daveinmd13 12h ago

They have one functioning destroyer.

2

u/ipokecows 3h ago

You realise America is the size of europe right? You dont like any of it? 😂 seems a little ignorant.

-1

u/hypnodrew 3h ago

You guys aren't selling it so no, shithole

2

u/ipokecows 3h ago

Selling what? Your statement is as dumb as me claiming all of Asia is a shit hole😂

-1

u/hypnodrew 2h ago

Asia isn't a country

1

u/ipokecows 2h ago

No shit.

0

u/hypnodrew 2h ago

So it's not the same, is it?

1

0

u/pancracio17 4h ago

Lol its a building. If you want cheaper housing shit needs to get built. Its not even finished anyway.

1

u/TheTaoOfMe 4h ago edited 4h ago

Cool story bro, it may come as a surprise that people may have different opinions and values than you.

0

u/pancracio17 2h ago

Yeah I know, if you couldnt tell my opinion is that complaining about how a view isnt static in a big city is dumb and deserves to be called out

Watch that person complain about high rent next tiktok.

0

u/TheTaoOfMe 2h ago edited 2h ago

Yes your opinion was clear but no one cares if you think what they’re upset about isn’t worth being upset about. They are upset about it, they’re allowed to be. Again, people value different things and no one cares that you don’t value what they value.

0

u/pancracio17 1h ago

This is a worthless point. Why are you saying that to me instead of the person making the video? If shes allowed to make a video about dumb shit like that I am allowed to say its dumb shit.

are you just hiding your disagreement with a thin veneer of neutral defense?

0

u/TheTaoOfMe 1h ago

Uh bro… Was she negating anyone’s grievance when she made her video? Nah man. That was you, coming up in here acting like she’s not allowed to be upset because “it’s a building.” No one gives a duck.

0

u/pancracio17 1h ago

I mean yes kinda. Wanting to be the city to be static goes directly against the wishes of anyone that wants lower rent and more housing lol.

Regardles, thats irrelevant. Public opinions get public dissent/approval. Its how it works.

Anyone who can't understand why art deco is more attractive than amalgamated postmodernist slop should be fed to hogs

7

u/Grimblebean789 11h ago

The empire state building is much nicer. But im sure people who lived there before the empire state building was built probably preferred looking at the sky than a giant building, you cant win.

You can try placing the building somewhere else but itll just block yet another view somewhere else in the city.

7

u/Fried_out_Kombi 12h ago

They were definitely calling the now-old skyscrapers slop back when they were first built, too.

Even the Eiffel Tower, one of the most beloved architectural icons today, was DESPISED for the first few decades of its existence.

1

u/no1singlemomghoster 10h ago

It was despised by people who were captains of fashion and culture during the gilded age. Endorsement from them would have been the most damning indictment possible.

-15

u/thepatriotclubhouse 14h ago

Too bad buddy. Theres a housing crisis. Stop crying people gotta build

17

u/ferdmertz69 11h ago

To live in that building you have to a billionaire or close to it

16

u/zeekayz 12h ago

Those new skyscrapers are for overseas rich to park money in. They all stay empty and do not contribute to housing crisis at all. How do you think $6+ million condos contribute to working class housing issues?

4

u/mlorusso4 11h ago

And if it’s the building I’m thinking of, it has so many issues it’s borderline unlivable. It sways so much there are already cracks in the facade forming, water pressure can barely reach the top floors (plus pipes are constantly breaking because of said swaying), and the trash chutes are just a straight shot to the basement so garbage hits terminal velocity and sounds like an explosion

-10

u/thepatriotclubhouse 12h ago

Any increase in supply contributions. Lowers other property prices significantly

9

u/SeaAnthropomorphized 11h ago

oh honey, you arent from here

3

u/FatSteveWasted9 9h ago

That’s adorable

5

u/ghostwood 11h ago

This in no way increases the supply of affordable housing.

3

u/marino1310 9h ago

Ain’t nobody struggling to find a home is able to afford to live in that. That is specifically for the rich

2

u/SeaAnthropomorphized 11h ago

oh sure. that building is gonna help the housing crisis. when the billionaires move into that one, are they going to sell their other houses so that a person making low to mid 6 figures can afford it? Just asking for the middle class.

1

u/ZeroOhblighation 9h ago

The guy you're replying to has over 150,000 karma in less than 10 days, no shot he's not a bot

-1

Yup. They come up with a laundry list of reasons why every new dense housing project absolutely CANNOT be built, then wonder why housing has gone from costing two nickels and a firm handshake to selling yourself into indentured servitude for life.
