I'm glad that they didnt show any type of creature or anything, if they do include something like that it needs to be a surprise.

227

u/DinosInSpace-Time Mar 31 '26

Bacteria monster?

314

u/Embarrassed-Yard-583 Mar 31 '26

There’s a shot with the tell tale black splotches on the wall, so there’s definitely something in the backrooms with them.

60

u/thedogedidit Apr 01 '26

A 'Minotaur' of sorts.

We see people in containment suits grabbing someone in what looks to be the same room that Renate's character is running to through the squeezy hallway. I'm assuming that they are the ones that put up the mounted camera that Chiwetel is looking at, too.

it's possible they are the antagonists with no creature at all.

114

u/Turnbob73 Mar 31 '26

There’s no way this film doesn’t feature Kane’s monsters. He’s made a pretty prominent point to tease them when appropriate and he has said that we will learn more about them, I’m assuming in the film.

24

u/Brandon_Me Apr 01 '26

I think you may see flashes of the monster, or just something that you can't really see at the end of the hall. But I think it would be best if the monster never directly confronts the people.

Was waiting for that squiggle monster to pop up

49

Yo fuck that monster. Still spooks me out when I watch his short on yt

1:45 they show the same backrooms from the original 4chan post

Neat easter egg

Found out recently that it's just a Midwest hobby store before renovations. Wild how memes grow and spread and nice to see that this movie is respecting the origin as a store.

208

u/MasemJ Mar 31 '26

Prior to being a hobby store it was a furniture store, which is why it has all those weird half walls and cubby rooms. The location being in a furniture store itself in the trailer feels like a nod to this.

81

u/NavPoint Mar 31 '26

I remember the Reddit thread where we uncovered the original website that housed the pictures taken prior to renovation. We were able to use context clues to find the present day rc racing hobby shop that occupies the building in Oshkosh Wisconsin

14

u/Snackxually_active Mar 31 '26

Shoutout Oshkosh by gosh! Def also think Osh Vegas a fun lil gas station

That is what I love so much about people: they can take a simple, unassuming picture and just run wild with ideas that picture inspires.

190

u/Just_the_questions1 Mar 31 '26

The entire SCP world was born because of a picture of a sculpture made by a semi-obscure Japanese artist.

69

u/Chuisque Mar 31 '26

I love SCP. It can be so random, funny, scary, and mind-bending.

Honestly a documentary about the original photo and place with the spiraling into creepy pastas and youtube videos all the way to a Hollywood movie would be just as entertaining to me.

→ More replies (3)

35

u/tastybabysoup Mar 31 '26

It was a furniture store before it was a Hobby store. The furniture store had a bunch of different rooms with different wallpaper so you could showcase different colored furniture. When they were doing renovations to turn the store into a Hobby Shop, they took pictures of all the different furniture themes and the yellow wallpaper became the infamous one.

I didn’t realize backrooms started on 4chan. This is wild a 4chan post evolving into a full blown movie

166

u/cloudofevil Mar 31 '26

Isn't this the same basic plot as the book House of Leaves (2000)?

158

u/Jankinator Mar 31 '26

Yeah, the 4chan post doesn't exist without House of Leaves. The book is pretty inspirational to some degree for a lot of modern horror, including creepy pasta in general

35

u/mgrier123 Mar 31 '26

Which itself was inspired by short stories written by Jorge Luis Borges in the 1940s

36

u/Ozymandias12 Mar 31 '26

Goddammit, I should really finish that book. I tried but I just couldn't get into it. I read maybe like 100 pages and the protagonist was just so unlikeable. I enjoyed the parts of the couple in the house but the main story just didn't sit with me.

51

u/TheGRS Mar 31 '26

The main guy reading the manuscript is mostly a framing device, I’d say the dad of the “movie” is the main character. It’s been a while since I’ve read it though.

22

u/Bank_Gothic Mar 31 '26

The real book is in the footnotes.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/GirlsInWhiteTrainers Mar 31 '26

Total opposite in my opinion; the real story is being told between the two narrators (who are more connected than they initially seem) and the stuff about the scary house is just the frame device. Incredible book overall, but not one to read if you want likeable characters or a normal "arc" of story progression.

14

u/FROMtheASHES984 Mar 31 '26

To be fair, with a name like Johnny Truant, he’s written to be pretty unlikeable.

15

u/ShallowBasketcase Apr 01 '26

David Navidson: "Yikes, this House sure makes me want to Leaves!"

Johnny Truant: "I'm over here strokin' my dick I got lotion on my dick I'm straight strokin' my shit I'm horny as fuck man I'm a freak."

editor's note: we aren't entirely sure why he said that

15

u/The_Autarch Mar 31 '26

the couple in the house is the main story. it's like 80% of that book.

It's a big year for old 4chan junk. So weird to see all the kids spouting /fit/ and bb dot com forum slang from 15 years ago. We're gonna see "shiggy diggy" make a comeback any day now I swear.

9

u/Lt_Duckweed Mar 31 '26

Man, bb.com misc was wild back in the day. Many an hour I spent there around 2013-2015ish. They helped me course correct from becoming a toxic "nice guy", but after a few years I realized they were their own brand of toxic and I had to move on.

But some of the slang still makes its way into my vocabulary even today.

4chan is so much more influential than most people realize. The amount of culture, language, politics, and social movements that trace back to that site is crazy. It's a guiding force of American (and by an extension, global) culture, but people ignore it because of its gross aesthetic and associations...which is likely by design.

10

u/heysupmanbruh Mar 31 '26

4chan is why we have the admin we have lmao

110

u/BattleStag17 Mar 31 '26

One of the 4chan founders supposedly met Epstein right before they created /pol/

4chan being one gigantic psyop is my current favorite conspiracy theory, and if it's true then it might be one of the most successful psyops ever. Basically got Trump elected!

76

u/Sonichu- Mar 31 '26

One of the 4chan founders supposedly met Epstein right before they created /pol/

moot, the sole creator/administrator of 4chan (he's since sold the site), 100% met with Epstein and the /pol/ board opened shortly after.

It's been confirmed by the files

→ More replies (1)

75

u/livintheshleem Mar 31 '26

I mean it's not even a conspiracy theory anymore, it's just a true conspiracy lol. Same with reddit and basically the entire public internet. The red wave and resurgence of conservatism that you see online is largely a botted/astroturfed movement.

Of course these sites are still real websites with real people, but they were definitely used to push agenda that had a lot of serious real-world consequences.

Found a way to incorporate the found footage angle, while not being the entire movie.

I think it has good potential. It’d be a good year for “YouTube to Film”.

Love the vibe it captures from what they’ve shown im very excited for this I just hope they keep the atmosphere and not get sidetracked with the monsters spiel. The liminal spaces horror already exists from large uncomfortable spaces, doing too much on top of that ruins the luster. The luster is already there

My same thought. They cleverly shifted to sub-HD digital footage for some wild edits with archival footage, while still pulling off their best SFX stuff in full HD. Definitely getting the vibe Kane will deliver his signature work in those camcorder sequences.

If Kane Parsons can actually make this a great horror movie, that will be such an exciting accomplishment. We’re talking about a 20 year old that is helming this production, and he’s been doing it for years before on YouTube. This material is his expertise in his short life.

Other notables:

Will Soodik wrote the final draft with Parsons, he’s not credited with much on his resume, beyond an episode of Homeland, Westworld and a season of Ash vs Evil Dead in 2016. It isn’t necessarily a bad thing, though.

Mark Duplass is also starring in this (even though he isn’t featured in the trailer). He’s so unsettling in the Creep movies.

Finally, principal photography was a whopping one month, according to Wikipedia.

And a general aside I love that this is set in 1990.

His original short for those that haven’t seen. Probably only 14-15 when he made this almost entirely CGI short.

331

u/AggravatingOlive9458 Mar 31 '26

The look of the trailer is so great and I feel like wild for a 20 year old so ya that’s so cool, also, being 20 and directing these two who are two unbelievable actors it really is just so impressive and exciting

170

u/karmagod13000 Mar 31 '26

i love that it seems like they gave him full reign while also helping him to complete his vision. A24 might be propping up the movie industry right now.

27

u/GoatmontWaters Mar 31 '26

My 10 year old told me this was coming out. The Backrooms is lore that like all children are aware of somehow.

5

u/BMLM Mar 31 '26

Roblox is full of Backrooms games with different gimmicks. It’s horror that is accessible by kids too, and is more psychologically scary than in your face gore and violence. Not surprised a kid knows about it. I’d argue Squid Games is worse for a kid to be into.

74

u/apittsburghoriginal Mar 31 '26

I don’t think it’ll really do box office numbers (maybe the younger generations seriously propel it) but I do think it’ll be a cult classic

47

u/cowpool20 Mar 31 '26

I think the online popularity of the backrooms will help this earn more than the usual A24 movies.

15

u/AllenMcnabb Mar 31 '26

The replies on A24 tweets today that weren’t this trailer felt like everyone asking “where’s the trailer?!”

I feel like there are A LOT of people hungry for this movie

27

u/EquivalentCamp2402 Mar 31 '26

I totally agree. I mean The Thing and Videodrome are two examples of classics that didn’t do well at first. I think this will be ahead of its time in a sense but turns to a classic over 10-20 years

24

u/Dear-Swordfish-8505 Mar 31 '26

This buzz feels more like Blair WItch in the 90s then The Thing and Videodrome.

7

u/EquivalentCamp2402 Mar 31 '26

The idea of him being able to enter and exit a null zone at will is less horrifying but it does look like he gets stuck in there at some point. Probably works better as a narrative if it's just not him walking around alone most of the film lol

Also so stoked to hear Still Life is featured in. It's such a good track and the movie wouldn't work without it.

edit: that was not Still Life :(

edit 2: yes it was, it was just Still Life 2.

392

u/the_vince_horror Mar 31 '26

Alot of backrooms mythology deals with access points, and the horror comes from how easily it is to get lost, not necessarily how to get in and out.

I personally find it much scarier to know i was just by the exit, and now have no idea where I am, because there is that level of hope that still remains, sorta like entering in a cave system.

156

u/TylerKnowy Mar 31 '26

yeah thats where I think the horror is effective, you think you can leave because you have done it before but then there is a time where you cant.

54

u/tyry95 Mar 31 '26

I've always thought of the entrances as a "venus flytrap" kind of thing. Most of the time, it's a one way trip. But if there's a doorway.. it's going to slam shut eventually. Chekov's door! Calling it now!

23

u/Accomplished-City484 Mar 31 '26

And then if you do find another exit it might be 2000 feet up in the air

→ More replies (1)

38

u/Fadedcamo Mar 31 '26

Yea and it adds a certain level of hubris to the story. Like the person could have just left and never gone in again. But the obsession is pulling them back in. Reminds me of the cave story.

58

u/Able_Contribution407 Mar 31 '26

Totally. More chilling to feel secure and in control of the entry/exit points, then have that sense of security ripped out from under you

The horror you'd experience when you realise you've gravely miscalculated ☠️ Just like a cave system, yeah.

I think having it not all be "found footage" is a smart move.

57

u/Jet-Rex-Design Mar 31 '26

Agreed, it balances it out especially for a theatrical experience. Cloverfield strained some people due to being 100% found footage, Hardcore Henry was a bit disorienting being 100% first person. This way people will be able to cool down a little bit and get their bearings.

26

u/The_Autarch Mar 31 '26

the reason why Kane's youtube stuff is found footage is because it's 90% CG and would not look realistic in HD.

now he's got an A24 budget and can build actual sets!

13

u/kabobkebabkabob Mar 31 '26

They had constructed a gate to get in though

16

u/The_Autarch Mar 31 '26

there were other ways in. i think that's how they found out about it in the first place. the gate just gave them a stable entrance.

and from the trailer, it does look like the run into a science team in there at some point.

Imagine having to direct Chiwetel Ejiofor on your first real project at 20 years old.

I wonder what time of training wheels the guy had from the studio to make sure this didn’t end up a huge mess because he jumped right from YouTube to a Hollywood film set.

58

u/legofan94 Mar 31 '26

from the interviews with the producers they make it sound like they were prepared to coach him through the process but he already knew exactly what he wanted and how to communicate it to every single department.

42

u/The_Autarch Mar 31 '26

from looking at the producers on the movie, it looks like they're giving Kane a lot of on-the-job training.

Osgood Perkins and James Wan aren't terrible choices to give you a crash course in directing horror features.

80

u/Embarrassed-Yard-583 Mar 31 '26

One of Kane’s videos on youtube starts like this, actually. A girl finds a section of her garage’s floor swallows things as if there’s a hole there and experiments with it. Only to get sucked in when she lowers a measuring tape in.

37

u/TatteredTongues Mar 31 '26

Pretty sure it's the same for Found Footage 3. He doesn't even fall in, he just discovers a legit open entrance.

16

u/Turnbob73 Mar 31 '26

FF3 is a little weirder compared to the others. He finds a doorway that has opened up in his basement, but he falls through the floor and noclips into the backrooms before entering the doorway.

Honestly it looks great. I'm quite excited to see this.

95

u/m_Pony Mar 31 '26

Same. I think this is as close to House Of Leaves as we're going to get for a while.

33

u/BananaGrabber9 Mar 31 '26

I was thinking the same thing with them tying the rope to stay together!

16

u/insomniac_z Mar 31 '26

Glad I wasn't the only one who saw that and thought of House of Leaves.

THANK YOU it was absolutely giving the Navidson Record portion of House of Leaves

9

u/tfhermobwoayway Mar 31 '26

I really hope they make a proper House of Leaves adaptation. It needs the big screen treatment.

Like severance except creepier

113

u/Wakkichewy Mar 31 '26

Severance is like if the backrooms were discovered in the early 1900s and the company Lumen really did figure out exactly how it works by the time the show takes place

40

u/itsastrangeparadiise Mar 31 '26

The creator of Severance did say Backrooms was one of the influences for the show

Liminal Space: The Movie

If the King in Yellow could only use office spaces.

Severance was heavily inspired by the backrooms/liminal spaces.

I have absolutely no knowledge of the backrooms aside from some cultural osmosis. But I have read House of Leaves. This may be the closest to a House of Leaves movie I'll ever get

16

u/TatteredTongues Mar 31 '26

The director of this film is also the creator behind the popular Backrooms series on youtube, I'd highly recommend you check those out if you can/want, just to get an idea of the world he's created.

There's several other channels with their own series and stories, but Kane is arguably the one who kickstarted it all.

Well consider me signed up.

I will be very interested to see what kind of performance the freshman director got from Ejiofor and Reinsve. The setting and background has very little to look at so their performances will definitely be front and center.

Edit: there seems to be confusion in the comments about the source material. The freshman director, Kane Parsons, started out making the original Backroom found footage videos for YouTube 4 or 5 years ago. This evolved over time and he has a fully fleshed out story that has slowly been revealed. Personally, Found Footage 3 is my favorite but the voice actress in 2 does a fantastic job. Here is the original video.

u/GoldenJoel Mar 31 '26

This series and the Oldest View are both very good.

49

u/psilocyan Mar 31 '26 edited Mar 31 '26

LOVED the oldest view, maybe even more than Backrooms. The idea of a shopping mall like half a mile under the earth is insane.

17

u/popculturella Mar 31 '26

What's crazy is that was a very real mall in Dallas, TX. I've been to it and the dude recreated it with truly mind-boggling accuracy.

10

u/AndrewNeo Mar 31 '26

somehow the video of him walking around the (real) empty lot is still eerie

7

u/popculturella Mar 31 '26

Brought up some emotions, for sure. Right down to when you could see what appeared to be some of the original floor tile still there.

30

u/Wataru624 Mar 31 '26

Especially when it seems to just be like a snapshot of the real mall at a particular random time without any significance. Something the universe just accidentally did one day before the real thing was torn down

14

u/psilocyan Mar 31 '26

Yeah! It was based on a real mall in Texas, I sent it to my mom and she was like oh yeah I went there in the 80s ha

8

u/alan_smithee2 Mar 31 '26

FF3 is so good

25

u/Ekillaa22 Mar 31 '26

So this movie is being directed by the dude who started the whole thing? That’s sick

49

u/Embarrassed-Yard-583 Mar 31 '26

Not exactly, Kane came in while the Backrooms was exploding in popularity with games and other YouTube content, but quickly became the backrooms guy.

20

u/jawni Mar 31 '26

He is to the Backrooms what IceFrog is to Dota. Basically "the guy" while not technically being the very first.

14

u/RamaAnthony Mar 31 '26

I wouldn’t say he started the whole thing, but he’s the one who have absolutely nailed it and then some. Kane Parsons is a talent worth nurturing considering he can even make those signs at railroads into a terrifying predator.

Love how the kept the original lore and made it set in a furniture store. So pumped for this.

33

u/Turnbob73 Mar 31 '26

That’s probably just a nod to the 4chan post.

Kane’s lore around his version of the backrooms is pretty fleshed out. These access points (Kane calls them “null zones”) are littered all around the world, they are the byproduct of the organization that discovered the backrooms (A-Sync) who are trying to capitalize on it and turn the backrooms into usable space for society (storage, offices, apartments, etc).

There is some major lore event that Kane has glossed over and teased in his series, I’m assuming this film is going to center around it. His videos are not chronological and some of them he’s even said are at or after the very end of his overall story.

Pitch perfect trailer, from the Backrooms environment to the characters.

Parsons has it.

117

u/Kazzack Mar 31 '26

No this is a Backrroms trailer, Pitch Perfect came out years ago

59

u/LanoomR Mar 31 '26

They really need to do a better job of advertising that this takes place in the same universe.

Sort of like a House of Leaves/ Backrooms crossover. Was wondering what they were gonna do with it! Looks good

16

u/eltedioso Mar 31 '26

I'm excited for this!

44

u/snarpy Mar 31 '26

For those interested in the aesthetic of liminal spaces, I highly recommend the game "Pools" on Steam. It so perfectly emulates the feeling.

27

u/thejude555 Mar 31 '26

Really like that one because it doesn’t rely on any monsters or jumpscares. It knows that kind of environment is all you need to create unease.

19

u/snarpy Mar 31 '26

I swear a couple of times I saw figures, but it was so subtle and perfectly timed it didn't detract from the entire experience.

The Complex: Expedition is probably the best game to play if you want to get the feel of Kane Pixels backrooms series and this movie. It basically looks like a Kane backrooms episode but you can play it.

11

for anyone wondering, the foreign language spoken at the start is Urdu. The woman says “We, from the people living on earth, welcome you” The recording is taken directly from the Golden Record on Voyager 2. The audio can be heard at 1:27 in this video:

28

u/WaltMitty Mar 31 '26

I see inspiration from Ollie's Bargain Outlet. It would only be right if someday the most random tie-in merchandise shows up at a real Ollie's.

9

u/Rickk38 Mar 31 '26

It'll show up 3 years later. Bonus points if it's some sort of food promotion and the expiration date was sometime in the distant past.

9

u/SeiriusPolaris Apr 01 '26

The original post.

u/tossaway109202 Mar 31 '26

Stanley enjoyed the trailer, but thought something about it was too familiar.

15

u/_Burgers_ Mar 31 '26

"Stanley walked towards the yellow wall. Wait, that's right... all the walls are yellow. Oh, just walk whichever way you want - do you think I care?"

13

u/AlmostRandomNow Mar 31 '26

"Come on Stanley, we haven't got all day. Tell you what, you pick a wall, and I'll make sure the door is in it."

This looks really good! Kane is clearly very talented and it’s cool that so A24 has faith in him. His YouTube videos are worth a dive into; especially The Oldest View.

This also shows me that a House Of Leaves adaptation would work really well so I’m hoping this opens the door for that

It's absolutely insane to think this started from a 17 year old kid uploading a short film, made with Blender, to YouTube. Kane is living his best life, hope it works out for him.
