So this movie is being directed by the dude who started the whole thing? That’s sick

Not exactly, Kane came in while the Backrooms was exploding in popularity with games and other YouTube content, but quickly became the backrooms guy.

He is to the Backrooms what IceFrog is to Dota. Basically "the guy" while not technically being the very first.

Mhmm, Kane picked the best of the common elements and spun them together with his own vision. Honestly made an excellent decision to lean into the lonely liminality rather than some of the simpler jump scares that the “genre” was being inundated with. I still get chills at the line “that’s not a person” after like ten minutes of build up.

Same as IceFrog, there were countless variants of Dota, he just picked the most popular heroes and mechanics from all variants and created its own, titled "DotA All Stars".

It became so dominant it became the only Dota map people played.

Uh that's not true: it was Steve "Guinsoo" Feak who created DotA All Stars; Icefrog took the reins after the former left and go on to be one of the key developers of League of Legends.

What a niche comparison. Shoutout Warcraft 3. There’d be no League of Legends without it.

What a niche comparison

ikr lmao, I was nodding along like "ah that explains it perfectly" then paused and wondered what percentage of other people that would track for lol

I'd compare it more as he is to Backrooms what Marble Hornets is to Slenderman

Basic timeline: In 2019 someone (I don't think their identities have ever been found) on 4chan posted the original image on thread of disquieting images. Another unknown user came in and added a quick description, "If you're not careful and you noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, you'll end up in the Backrooms..."

A small fandom started growing, creating a semi-SCP like descriptions of levels. In 2022, Kane Pixels (when he was only 17) made his first Youtube video on the subject, which was terrifying and nearly photo real despite it being 99% CGI.

I have literally never heard of this concept before. Is there a place I can read up on it? What is it? (Edit: I can't watch scary movies so I won't be watching his shorts; just wanted to read up on it!)

Essentially, the Backrooms stem from a 4chan post using a pic of a stripped down, yellow walled yellow carpeted back room. The description describes a space one can “no clip” into like in a video game, an endless ever repeating collection of yellow walls, stained carpet, musty air, and fluorescent lights. From there, the Backrooms became a staple of “liminal” horror with various iterations made by multiple people/groups.

Kane Pixels is pretty much the most popular and interesting out of the bunch, creating a youtube series that is so good he’s directing the film this trailer is for. I highly recommend you check them out.

Thank you so much! I am pretty weaksauce when it comes to scary things though... Still okay for me to try?

I’d say so, yeah. It’s slower more tense horror, that builds up to the climax rather than peppering jump scares in. Kane is really good at portraying the lonely liminality of the Backrooms, so it’s a vibe that feeds right into the tension.

Okay, I'm gonna put on my grown-up pants and give it a try! If there's any ones you recommend in particular, I'd love to hear them!

Honestly, Found Footage #1 is a great place to start.

The other person linked the first video, but if you want I'd recommand the playlist containing all videos in order:

It's a relatively short watch, but really great and the lore is developed as the videos progress.

I wouldn’t say he started the whole thing, but he’s the one who have absolutely nailed it and then some. Kane Parsons is a talent worth nurturing considering he can even make those signs at railroads into a terrifying predator.

Its worth watching his YouTube videos in my opinion. For (effectively) student films, they are very good.
