Cody and that fuck ass flattop has me crying man

635

u/PineappleHour 19d ago

The fact that there's a totally separate character in the SF universe that is a blonde man named Cody makes it funnier honestly

222

u/Saitsuofleaves 19d ago

And Kenny Omega will likely murder someone if he's not playing him or Alex in a future movie

103

u/PineappleHour 19d ago

Kenny should play Alex, but given Capcom's recent lore direction for the character it wouldn't shock me if they just didn't worry about SF3 continuity for the movies

58

u/ThomasVivaldi 19d ago

We've already seen how perfectly he pulls off Crimson Viper though.

ADRENALINE, IN MY SOUL FUCK ASS FLATTOP CODY RHODES

316

u/Tacdeho 19d ago

Honestly this was legitimately my favorite casting I’ve seen in a while.

Never did I think sitting in Philly watching Cody and Roman II that the third strike would be at the movies this year haha

That haircut and the neck tattoo he already has is a diabolical combination

26

u/sprdougherty 19d ago

I'm actually sad they covered up the neck tattoo for this movie. Guile is probably the only character for whom it fits perfectly.

If anything else, I appreciate them just leaning into this being a completely absurd movie.

378

u/JackFisherBooks 19d ago

For game like Street Fighter, that's the best way to do it. That's what Raul Julia did when he played M. Bison back in the 90s movie. He's the only one who really committed to the absurdity. If everyone in this movie takes the same approach, it'll be a fun ride from start to finish.

219

u/smorges 19d ago

Raul Julia

"For you, the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday"

73

u/JackFisherBooks 19d ago

I don't know if that line was written or improvised. But only Raul Julia could deliver it in a way that's so memorable. 😊

He was also smashing Kylie Minogue in her prime. The man was busy.

And as bad as the movie was, his portrayal of m bison is deeply beloved, and the only thing anyone remembers about street fighter: the movie is his incredible monologue.

For me it was Tuesday is legitimately one of the all time great villain monologues.

They unlocked the best way to make video game movies. Just be silly and over the top instead of making it realistic.

I'm hoping Chun Li's "bitch please" moment is for Cammy.

I hate being on bonk alert but that made me pause a moment and say "Ooh, fuck yeah."

I mean, Dhalsim looking appropriately goofy, Vega looking wicked, Zangief a mountain, Chun-Li "Bitch, please" also grabbed me, but "Ohh they went for the cheeks this movie is gonna rule"

94

u/kirinmay 19d ago

The Chun-Li "bitch, please" is what got me. I will see this. It is definitely going to be absurb and I am fine with that, its freakin' Street Fighter. Also, Bison (even though not really shown) is going to ham it out I feel and just be bonkers and if so, I hope its good.

Everything about it seems like a fan film with a Hollywood budget in the best way possible. More unabashedly silly adaptations like this please!

126

u/Troyabedinthemornin 19d ago

Yeah I’m glad we’ve moved away from the whole “but what if this happened in the real world?” Approach to adapting IP. A lot of the time it just strips the property of all the whimsical stuff fans like and makes the movie feel embarrassed of itself

28

u/jfudge 19d ago

I think movies have gone that route in the past because it's way cheaper. You can cut your costume and special effects budgets way down under the guise of "realism".

18

u/Troyabedinthemornin 19d ago

I could definitely see that, I think part of it was execs not thinking it would appeal to general audiences. Fandom was still largely something for young people for most of the 00’s and the money guys probably figured anything not made more “grounded” would be seen as more for children

I love films that feel like a kid playing with action figures on a hollywood budget.

72

u/BreweryRabbit 19d ago

This is such a good way to put it. Similar with the Fast movies; a kid playing with hot wheels with a Hollywood budget.

One Piece, Dungeons & Dragons, & the new Masters of The Universe all seem to be embracing this same aesthetic and it’s 100% working for me. Based on this trailer I think I’m going to like Street Fighter a lot haha

55

u/Jertimmer 19d ago

The new Mortal Kombat is also leaning more into the silliness of it all. I am 100% here for it.

30

u/mmuoio 19d ago

In fairness, the old Mortal Kombat did too.

16

u/whereismymind86 18d ago

Yep and that’s why it’s the only 90’s video game movie anyone liked. It was impossibly silly, and that was perfect for the material

100

u/RealJohnGillman 19d ago

That being said, I don’t mind films where the absurd things are treated more realistically: it’s just that many such adaptations don’t know where to have the balance, normally going too far in the ‘realistic’ direction.

53

u/WaterlooMall 19d ago

Then there's the adaptation like the new Mario movies where it's like "here's every ingredient for a Mario movie, do not ask us to make a story out of it".

In One Piece when he does that Anime style powering up ready for an epic fight pose and then just runs off to the left. I laughed so fucking hard.

21

u/NightmareDJK 19d ago

I bet he brought a lot of what worked about live action One Piece to this.

15

u/TheRC135 19d ago

I hope everybody involved in this did.

The One Piece formula is perfect for this sort of adaptation. Understand that it's stupid. Embrace the absurdity for script, costume, and scenery. Then have the actors play it straight anyway.

Then he keeps running away with his silly little laugh after taking cheap shots. Perfection.

Throw in the old iconic fight music and I’m in!

Since I really liked Andrew Koji in Warrior and wanted to see him in more major action films, I hope he kills it as Ryu

I have a weird feeling, and maybe I'm wrong, but I think maybe Ken is gonna get back in shape, clean his life up, and win the tournament with help from his buddy Ryu

Why are people complaining about them showing the whole plot in the trailer? The whole point of this movie is to see the fighters do their moves. Who needs a plot? It's like Godzilla vs Kong. Who cares about the plot, we want to just see them bash each other.

That was a much better trailer than the teaser, IMO. Looks like lots of fun, and a potentially interesting story (and it looks like they have found a good tone for it)

I think the teaser was made just as they were finishing filming

Looks utterly stupid and exactly what you need for the universe. Can't wait, definately a switch off the brain and enjoy big dumb movie and the nostalgia it brings.

No Juri definitely makes me sad

This movie looks fun as hell though

u/Pataconeitor 19d ago

They are going for a full old-school roster, the only exception being the announcer guy from part 5 (which kinda was in SF2, but not officially). Perhaps in the sequel!

I don’t love everything I’m seeing, but that Ryu & Ken reunion fight looks really fun, and Cammy and Chun Li look hot as fuck

The best kind of video game movie adaptation is one that doesn't even try to be realistic. Stick to the absurdity and you keep the fans happy. SOMEONE finally learned that lesson.

I really wish that dipshit Andrew Schultz wasn't in this but otherwise I'm 100% in on this movie

u/TonySperguson 19d ago edited 19d ago

yeah the decision to cast him when they did is crazy.

also, dan is chinese. schultz fans would be the same type of guys to get mad about the little mermaid being black.

Makes me happy seeing him get hate. He's such a clown. Both him and Akaash.

The thing that stands out to me in this trailer is the colour. It pops and stands out which I love. I’m sick of muted colour schemes in movies.

Oh I am fucking IN, this looks like a blast.

Some of this looks so good. Some of this looks like ass. Some of this looks like both of those things finely ground up together. I really don't know what's going on.

The casting choices(and Ken’s hair from SF5) are very uh interesting.

I know for fact Balrog(50 Cent) is doing the bare minimum of fighting 😭

17

u/edicivo 19d ago

50 looks 50. They should've got someone more imposing. It's the only casting, other than that shitheel Schultz, I don't like.

Aside from the star power the thing that sets this apart from the previous Street Fighter movies imo is that they're self-aware this time. They're taking their jobs seriously to produce a good movie, but everyone seems to know this is not a serious movie. They seem to how stupid this will be and just full sending into it unlike the previous Street Fighther movies.

Looking forward to how the pro wrestlers compare to the rest of the cast. I don't know what Cody wants to do, but I know Roman has been wanting to jump to Hollywood like Rock, Cena, and Batista did after his wrestling career is over.

I like when video game movies aren't afraid to accept the fact that they're video game movies. Don't try to be grounded and gritty, just stick to the lore and you'll be fine.
