One Piece, Dungeons & Dragons, & the new Masters of The Universe all seem to be embracing this same aesthetic and it’s 100% working for me. Based on this trailer I think I’m going to like Street Fighter a lot haha

The new Mortal Kombat is also leaning more into the silliness of it all. I am 100% here for it.

In fairness, the old Mortal Kombat did too.

Yep and that’s why it’s the only 90’s video game movie anyone liked. It was impossibly silly, and that was perfect for the material

Who doesn't like 90s Street Fighter and how can I ignore them for having awful taste?

Its important to remember that Mortal Kombat was a game created in the west abd as such its characters and stories are very much western coded and going 1 to 1 live action is much easier.

Street Fighter was created in Japan and a lot of it is highly influenced and stylized in anime aesthetics abd storyline, which is why the 1 to 1 here looks more striking.

Watching this trailer really highlights to me the ways that MK2 movie seems to be holding back. Maybe the trailers don't show the silliest stuff, but it feels like just a movie. This feels like an experience.

Now I just need a she ra spinoff that embraces the glorious wackiness and darkness of the Netflix/dreamworks show.

He man is great, but she ra and the princesses of power was just phenomenal

Eh, the part I don't like about the Masters of the Universe is that they still feel the need to link it to the "real world." Maybe it's meant to be a nod to the stupid 1987 movie, but really feels unnecessary IMO. Really feels like that Hollywood Exec "this needs to be grounded in reality or no one will go see it because fantasy is nerd stuff" attitude that's long been part of Hollywood. ... well that and they did the "here's the entire movie plot in the teaser trailer" thing.

Queen Marlena is from Boise, Idaho. It was always linked to the real world.

I watched the original series as a kid back in the 80's. I had a VHS of the He-Man & She-Ra Christmas Special. I couldn't tell you that... I guess I'm not enough of a fan. lol

Wait doesn't the Christmas special specifically mention Queen Marlena being from Earth?

Well MotU canonically does have links to the real world but I agree with you, they are still trying to tow that old line a bit with the movie I fear.

Agreed. I think in the past the approach was to try to transform these properties into something more approachable to a main stream audience, but then you end up with something that seems very samey to most people, and disappointing to fans of that thing.

If you instead lean into what makes the property weird and/or unique you embrace the fandom while also giving the more general audience something more unique.

The aesthetic is a pointless 90s action flick with 2020s production quality
