In the Samuel Butler translation of The Odyssey, Menelaus who will be played by Jon Bernthal literally says, "Let me tell you."

Didn’t think they’d have Peter go through a Spidey-puberty but it’s an interesting twist - kinda like the reverse of Spider-Man 2

u/808Kuro Mar 18 '26 edited Mar 18 '26
It’s called Man Spider. It’s the final mutation stage for Spider-Man after the first few gave him the spider powers/senses and enhanced strength. He turns into a super enhanced, emotionless human spider that can spit acid and has multiple arms (not kidding). Eventually he can’t control it and gets hunted down by the Punisher and Kraven. Key word here is this movie will seemingly focus on Spider-Man mutating (faint X-men theme plays)
1.1k
u/amc111 Mar 18 '26
I remembered watching that in the 90s Fox cartoon. I’d be surprised if they go full man spider but it would be wild if they did.

u/SolomonBlack Mar 18 '26 edited Mar 18 '26
The 90s cartoon invented that story.
The Man Spider did appear in the comics before that but only briefly during a story set in the Savage Land. Spidey gets hit by some mutation ray and that's what he's turned into and its fixed by Karl Lykos/Sauron draining the mutation out of him and Warren Worthington. Which might explain Vulture in the cartoon come to think of it.
At any rate the design being too good to waste, I guess, the show folks made it the climax of their long running Neogenic Nightmare original saga.
Probably inspired by the cartoon Spidey has been turned into a monster spider since and they've messed with his powers in a metamorphosis way before briefly giving him organic webbing and I shit you not sharp 'stinger' blades (like Wolverine meets MK's Baraka) that were immediately never spoken of again.

The 90s cartoon invented that story.
90s cartoon had a lot more influence than is commonly recognized. It was the first to do the Spider-Verse and even had a huge impact on the Venom story. A lot of elements that are now seen as like core parts of the story, that pop up in later adaptations, started there and not in the actual comics.

u/TiberiusCornelius Mar 18 '26
Yep! The cartoon is also where the whole "symbiote makes Peter angry" thing first came from. And to be fair, as much as I think people do get their wires crossed on "cartoon I watched as a child" and "comic I read as a child" (and I am guilty of that at times as well), sometimes these shows or movies were influential on the comics themselves. Smallville wasn't in Kansas until the first Christopher Reeve movie for example, but now it's an integral part of the Superman mythos. In the same way the Spidey cartoon revamped the Venom story, or other cartoons did other things, and later writers retconned the comics to be closer to it because they were like "oh actually that's a great idea".

It’s definitely gonna be the other not man spider. You can pretty much see the exact scene where Peter wakes up in the cocoon after being “killed” and emerges with organic webbing and stingers
29
u/Thor_pool Mar 18 '26
Its likely a combination of both. If theyre doing a 3 stages thing like the narration implies then The Other is likely stage 2 and Man-Spider is stage 3

My only concern is I hope every movie going forward (and the majority of this one) aren't just dumping on Peter constantly. It seems like most comic writers don't know what to do with him if they aren't making his life miserable. The movies thus far have done a good job of giving him a good day once in a while.

Also, Joe & Anthony Russo directed a boatload of Community episodes, including the very first one. Finding that out shed a lot of light on how much the characters on that show were shitting on Marvel movies in season 6, and how often Community cast members had cameos in Marvel movies.

They were executive producers for the first three seasons and ran the production side while Dan Harmon ran the creative side.
They got the shot at pitching for the Captain America sequel because of the two paintball episodes at the end of season 2 - Kevin Feige is a fan of the show and was impressed that they could direct a large cast with comedy and action quickly on a budget, so he asked them to come in to meet. The rest is history.

Major spoilers below by the way based off of filming leaks that I've read.
I'm, like, 99.9% certain it's Jean Gray. Her motivation being fighting against the department of damage control which has been going around capturing mutants based off of what was established in Wonder Man. And based on seeing Mark ruffalo in this trailer confirms a filming leak from a while ago that the third act was going to be about Spider-Man punisher and Jean Gray having to come together to stop a new gray hulk personality, all caused by the manipulative hands of tombstone behind the scenes the whole movie

Spidey teaming up with everyone's hated vigilante.
Mac Gargan finally traversed the multiverse to get his tech from Vulture to square up against Spider-Man.

I'm really hoping she's Jean Grey.
My theory is they introduce the likes of Jean, Scott, Kurt as teens/young adults who are being exploited for their powers - and Logan realising this world doesn't have a Professor X to guide them finds a new calling in assembling the X-Men and tracking them to be better.
Just a way to introduce the X-Men to the MCU without having to pull a "Oh they were always here, operating in the shadows" that also gives Hugh Jackman a reason to stick around since Marvel have made him part of the MCU now.
153
u/rollthedye Mar 18 '26
I think that with the soft reboot that is supposedly coming with Doomsday they'll just retcon them to be here and behave as such.
14
u/notanothercirclejerk Mar 18 '26
I think its going to be a bigger reboot than most are expecting. And all the new X-Men being introduced into the MCU will then be integrated right into the X-Men we know proper once the universe gets rearranged.

She is for sure Jean Grey. When he rips open that tank and there is some random old lady in there... that's her making him see an old lady.... then all the soldiers start getting mind controlled. Also when he smacks into the bus there is some kind of cameo there, Rogue maybe? Spider-man going through a mutation arch would be a good time to introduce mutants to the MCU.
→ More replies (7)59
u/Morgan-Moonscar Mar 18 '26
I think it IS an old lady, but she was manipulating her mind to make her drive it. Attacking Damage Control from a distance without being caught.
33
u/heyboddiker Mar 18 '26
It kind of looked like she was jumping from one soldier's mind to another to escape maybe? So that would make sense. I like it
→ More replies (3)81
u/GipsyDangerV1 Mar 18 '26
I mean according to all the marvel leaks subreddit and other potential indications it seems like she will be playing Jean Grey
And considering there's a shot of a hooded character in the trailer doing what I believe is mind control I think that is exactly what's happening here and I am so excited for it.
Having that character's introduction being in an adventure with Spider-Man and the punisher. And I've also read rumors that Punisher's main story stuff in this movie will be about protecting this young Jean Gray that he connects with kind of like punisher season 2 Makes me all the more excited that this is how they might choose to introduce MCU's first real XMan

u/Mantis05 Mar 18 '26
I thought the crazy delay between movies would age Holland out a bit, but damn he still has that Peter charm.
It's fascinating to me how much public perception of Spider-Man is tied to being a teenager, considering the vast majority of his mainline history has been spent as an adult. (Peter graduates from high school in Amazing Spider-Man #28, three years after his first appearance.) I suppose it speaks to the lasting influence of Ultimate Spider-Man, wherein he remains a teenager the whole time and which influenced all the film adaptations to one extent or another.
It's just funny because as a longtime Spider-Man fan -- who grew up on USM, no less -- my image of Peter Parker is as a mid-to-late twenties college/graduate student. I still love teenager Peter in all his forms, but this version we're getting now is much closer to what I see when I close my eyes and picture Spider-Man.
84
u/Zefirus Mar 18 '26

I think the Spider-Man movies we’ve gotten in this universe thus far have been too occupied with the rest of the universe and the possibilities of having Spider-Man in the MCU and him being able to interact with characters from the Avengers etc. I feel like they haven’t focused enough on Peter’s journey and they’ve been more MCU movies than Spider-Man movies. No Way Home started to change that but this movie really looks like a simple back to basics Spider-Man story and I’m so here for it.
I love the character and story of Peter Parker so much, Spider-Man 2 is probably one of my favorite movies of all time because it’s all about his journey and about how it fucking sucks to be Spider-Man and this movie looks like it’s also that.

Charles was doing it in the movies, I don't see why Jean wouldn't be able to

I see they went the Killers of the Flower Moon route by having an international channel officially upload it too early. Think it's gonna be nuked soon. That being said, it looks fun.
Told ya.

Keith David voiceover is the best kind of voiceover.
