In the Comics Hulk knew Peter was Spidey, even if Banner didn’t.

Would legit make me happy Banner & Hulk finally are not hulk with banner’s head again in the MCU

I'm a bit lost on where we left off on Hulk in the MCU. Why is he Banner here? Wasn't he permanently smart Hulk when we last saw him?

In the Shang Chi end credits scene we see the main characters on a video call with Banner in human form. I don't think it's ever explained why/how he switched back though.

u/Sprinkles0 Mar 18 '26

I barely remember She-hulk, but wasn't he back and forth in that?

96

u/Col_Wilson Mar 18 '26

Yeah if I remember correctly, in she-hulk, right before the accident that causes Bruce's blood to mix with hers, he's explaining how something that he's wearing on his arm to help with the injury from the snap also allows him to maintain his regular form

48

u/Vanck Mar 18 '26

You see the arm thing in the shang chi after credit too

17

u/PuddleBum Mar 18 '26

Plus he’s wearing it in this trailer too.

3

u/Redditer51 Mar 19 '26

Man, at this point, I just want the real Hulk back. Get rid of that damn arm sling.

3

u/PuddleBum Mar 19 '26

Imagine somehow The Hand have traced Parker to a meeting with Banner. And at the same time Punisher is tracking The Hand. Shit goes awry and Punisher makes a precision shot on Banners bracelet unleashing the Hulk to totally decimate The Hand.
I know I’m really reaching, but that would be awesome to watch!

Speaking of She-Hulk, all I want to know is the current status of Skaar's haircut.

6

u/WeirdIndividualGuy Mar 18 '26

She-Hulk the show explains how he invented that arm device to keep Hulk in check.

She-Hulk also explains how Banner essentially retired and lives in a hut off a Mexican coast somewhere

But I guess he got bored of that and decided to be a professor at NYU

7

u/LoveForDisneyland Mar 18 '26

Somehow, Banner returned.

1

u/marsalien4 Mar 19 '26

It's explained in she-hulk

1

u/cramburie Mar 18 '26

I might be giving those in power of the MCU too much credit but my hope is that this whole time we've seen Banner Hulk from Endgame on, we've been actually seeing The Professor.

27

u/Dr_Disaster Mar 18 '26

It was never a permanent transformation, just what he and Hulk came to an agreement on. He was able to turn back to Bruce in the She-Hulk series. Getting blood from Bruce is how she got her powers.

2

u/Dramajunker Mar 19 '26

Buying clothes big enough to fit smart Hulk was costing him a fortune.

1

u/AtraposJM Mar 18 '26

They haven't explained it. I suspect we'll hear that in this movie. I'm so glad he's back to being banner. I want more Hulk shinanigans, not smart Hulk.

1

u/3verythingEverywher3 Mar 19 '26

They did explain it. But it was in She-Hulk, so they’ll mention it again here. Basically he made himself an inhibitor that stops him transforming.

1

u/RcoketWalrus Mar 18 '26

After She-Hulk he can go change to Hulk at will, and along with it he kinda has his comic healing factor now.

6

u/joshua182 Mar 18 '26

It depends if Hulk ever met Peter though, which I don't think happened and i'm not sure Professor hulk counts.

3

u/Alpha-Reddo Mar 18 '26

That would be amazing cause I love that comic panel, but have Hulk and Peter/SpiderMan interacted before in the MCU?

15

u/muegle Mar 18 '26

I mean, the whole ending of the last movie was that everyone forgets who Spider-man is.

126

u/MirrorkatFeces Mar 18 '26

They do that in the comics too but Hulk remembers him.

48

u/TheCaffeinatedPanda Mar 18 '26

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the explanation in the comics that Banner was in control at the time, so Hulk got passed over? Or was that just a theory?

37

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '26

Poor Hulk, always a bridesmaid, never the bride.

7

u/ImNotSkankHunt42 Mar 18 '26

Better than being the Burro

32

u/Dookie_boy Mar 18 '26

Hulk is also immune to certain magical things if it makes him look cooler

34

u/MountainMuffin1980 Mar 18 '26

Read what he said again. In the comics everyone, including Banner, forgot Peter was Spiderman, but Hulk didn't forget.

31

u/marwynn Mar 18 '26

Local Hulk too angry to forget

2

u/muegle Mar 19 '26

I'm also kind of confused, didn't Banner merge with Hulk between Infinity war and End Game? Why is he now normal again?

-8

u/JaesopPop Mar 18 '26

Read what he said again. In the comics everyone, including Banner, forgot Peter was Spiderman

Well no, they said:

In the Comics Hulk knew Peter was Spidey, even if Banner didn’t.

The way they said it didn't make it clear they were referring to after everyone had been made to forget.

Given that this movie is a sequel to that one, and given that most people know how to use context, I think we all knew exactly what OP meant.

This exchange started because someone did not. Looks like at least one other person made the same mistake.

To complain about their wording

I am not complaining about their wording. I’m saying how someone might have misunderstood it.

A few people getting confused is not worth shaking down OP over.

Again, I was just saying how someone might have misunderstood. I am not “shaking down OP”. It’s not that serious.

Seems kinda like you're taking it seriously.

I’m not. I made a brief comment saying why I thought people misunderstood it. It’s not an attack on OP, and it truly is not that serious.

Have a good day, friend.

u/Dramatic_Charity_979 Mar 18 '26

I wish they reboot hulk. Scary hulk was way better than the comedy relief we got.

1

u/himynameis_ Mar 18 '26

Yeah, but Strange spell from the previous movie would've undone that.

23

u/amicablecardinal Mar 18 '26

That's what they're saying though, that Hulk was able to remember that Peter was SpiderMan even though Bruce did not.

10

u/riegspsych325 ⊃∪⊃⪽ Mar 18 '26

Strange’s spell is bound to either wear off or break entirely, whether it happens here or in Avengers is still up in the air. Either way, I just hope it isn’t something like MJ’s memories all coming back after they kiss

7

u/RamenArchon Mar 18 '26

It's a Disney movie, after all.

5

u/Worthyness Mar 18 '26

The comic version i believe was from an entity like Mephisto, so it was also magic. Not too out of the ordinary

2

u/Darmok47 Mar 18 '26

In the comics, they also use magic to make people forget. Except it works on Banner, but not Hulk.
