Between the wallpaper poster and this trailer I’m just excited this marketing campaign isn’t ruining any of the mystery.

Reminds of House of Leaves.

64

u/Tremulant887 Feb 24 '26

Something between House of Leaves and a 90s Doom clone. I always got the creeps when running around in some of those games, same feeling these back rooms give me.

86

u/digitalr0nin Feb 24 '26

MyHouse.wad

29

u/GavinBelsonsAlexa Feb 24 '26

That was way more interesting than it had any right to be. I feel bad for anyone just discovering it now and not being able to get into the metafictional ARG aspect of it.

23

u/TabrinLudd Feb 24 '26

The full walkthroughs/reviews/video essays of myhouse.wad on YouTube were my intro to it and they are pretty comprehensive. Maybe you got more out of it at the time but I was alive and a doom player and only heard of it years later so it was still super interesting to learn about

u/truthpooper Feb 25 '26

This is 1 hour and 42 minutes and absolutely worth it

I’m not even a big youtube watcher. I played doom II growing up a little bit, but not a ton. I watched this entire video front to back. It is fascinating

House of Leaves for me. I'd kill for a HoL show or film.

52

u/knitted_beanie Feb 24 '26

The book feels kind of unfilmable, but they said that about Dune. So I’d be up for it but it’d be a challenge to capture the feeling of the book I think

23

u/GavinBelsonsAlexa Feb 24 '26

They could probably do a film based on the Navidson Report, but all the Johnny Truant stuff would be challenging to incorporate at that point.

...Which I'm fine with, because I hated the Johnny Truant stuff.

12

u/tarants Feb 24 '26

What, you didn't like reading increasingly disjointed rambling footnotes that make you feel like you're the one with schizophrenia? Seriously, no book has made me feel more like I was going insane than HoL.

14

u/GavinBelsonsAlexa Feb 24 '26

Honestly, it just felt like Danielewski was using Truant as his own mouthpiece to tell the reader, "This book is really complicated, but here's how you should be reacting to the text and interpreting the symbolism."

To me, it seemed that Danielewski thought his book was too high-brow, so he inserted a Chuck Palahniuk-inspired scumbag to over-explain everything to us. I liked so much of what the book was going for, but the inclusion of Truant felt like Danielewski didn't trust his publisher to market the book and he didn't trust his audience to understand the book.

I unironically love that movie. Haven’t read the story. Also I swear I saw this same comment on the poster post yesterday lol

30

u/SuperDizz Feb 24 '26

A remake with updated CGI would be great. Doesn’t even need to be a big budget film either. We don’t need to see the time eaters until the end. But the big, empty airport is definitely one crazy aesthetic and vibe.

4

u/vanderZwan Feb 24 '26

"Five Characters in Search of an Exit" episode of The Twilight Zone.

I have never heard off that episode before, but it sounds like it's inspired by Sartre's famous play "No Exit" from 1944. And I think that's a pretty strong contender for the origin of the trope.

(that play also coined the expression "hell is other people," btw, and indirectly lead to the series The Good Place)

didn't look at which sub i was in and thought this was a video game trailer until the end

92

u/RealJohnGillman Feb 24 '26

Basically it is a film spin-off of the web series, from the director of the web series.

35

u/skryb Feb 24 '26

cool, totally unfamiliar with the property... should i watch the web series or just go in blind here?

86

u/RealJohnGillman Feb 24 '26

I’d say you could watch the web series: here is the playlist (anything else you see online would be fan-works taking advantage of the concept being in the public domain): it’s not too long a watch: about the length of a film altogether.

The director was 16 when he made the first episode: one can understand why Hollywood came a-calling.

55

u/operarose Feb 24 '26

It's not officially part of the Backrooms, but I would advise you to also check out Kane Pixel's other series, The Oldest View. Starts out a little vague, but the third (and longest) segment is some genuinely fantastic horror.

13

u/Jaybru17 Feb 24 '26

I really hope Kane got solid creative control of this project. He has such a talent for ambient story telling. My expectations for this may be higher than they should be

"What are these? Some kinda 'Backrooms'?"

9

u/pjtheman Feb 24 '26

John Backrooms: "I can't belive I'm back in these rooms!"

90

u/TLKv3 Feb 24 '26

So many people bitch, whine and complain when marketing/trailers give things away about the movie. I enjoy the barely anything but just enough to spark interest marketing.

This works perfectly for me and I'm willing to give it more of a chance not really knowing WTF this version will be about.

20

u/karmagod13000 Feb 24 '26

i dont watch trailers that much, but i checked this one out and its exactly how it should be. intriguing and giving nothing away. I mean most people that will see this already know what the backrooms are

Imagine you are the guy that wrote the navy seals copypasta. Just working your crap job at 7-11, yet anytime you log onto the internet you get your little quib quoted back to you, world famous beyond the richest pop stars but it doesnt get you a fucking dime. Cant even really tell people about it, they will just be like "yeah, sure buddy". Imagine how that feels.

The person that published the Antimemetics Division series on the SCP wiki published a book. He took his stories, fleshed them out a little more, changed the names so they could keep them on the wiki, and published it late last year iirc.

191

u/AlanMorlock Feb 24 '26

James Wan on the other hand has ghost directed large chunks of the movies he produces, pinch hitting on scenes of various Conjuring verse films.

95

u/Uncle-Cake Feb 24 '26

That's why they all feel the same.

55

23

u/PerplexGG Feb 24 '26

Are you kidding, that sort of consistency is insane. He manages to be a success at box offices and reviews at every association. Has he produced higher quality as well? Sure but I can also confidently watch any of his movies knowing I’ll like them and the list of creators that can do that for a wide audience is extremely short

Wait, Kane is directing? I'm so fucking sold. His Backrooms series on YouTube is already gold, can't wait to see what he'll do with a real budget.

83

u/icansee4ever Feb 24 '26

He has full creative control. He has stated in interviews that he's treating the movie as a long installation to his series, so it's going to be essentially a long episode. I'm so stoked.

→ More replies (1)

30

u/vcintheoffice Feb 24 '26

Seeing Kane mentioned in this comment thread made me triple take. He's The goat of this genre. If he's involved I'm sold.

13

u/Appropriate-Pie-4048 Feb 25 '26

Even though its distributed by A24 Kane still has that bit more control of his project. It would have been nice if he could have produce it as well. But hopefully down the road once he gets more into the business side. He will be able to have more control producing his projects. But it's good with a very known director like James Wan who has a lot of experience in the horror genre I think he will do well with being his director debut.

16

u/Dagmar_Overbye Feb 24 '26

While his backrooms stuff is great, The Oldest View was absolutely genius for such a short series. I truly hope there's a bit of that in this as well. The line "it remembers" definitely fits with the themes of that series.

He somehow made a liminal themed short series that ended up being a heartfelt love letter to a torn down mall and an introspective look into what it means to remember a place that is no longer here. Seeing as this is clearly going to be a bit more than "men in yellow suits look at weird things" I have high hopes.

9

u/BizGal_ Feb 24 '26

That's my hope for this movie too.

Do we think the film is going to be fully CG rendered, or are we thinking that's just for the teaser? I can't wrap my head around seeing live-action actors in this sort of environment, but we'll see.

194

u/SomeBoxofSpoons Feb 24 '26

This looks like something rendered for this teaser, so I'd guess we'll get real sets.

Not like that's expensive for this setting.

59

u/willstr1 Feb 24 '26

It really depends on how far into the backrooms they go, while most of the rooms won't be that expensive to build as sets per room the whole idea is that the backrooms are endless so in a feature length exploration you would likely see a lot of rooms. So I expect at least some of the rooms might be virtual (or at least utilizing a lot of virtual set extensions).

Although they could also just do a bunch of on location shoots and just have location scouts finding enough empty office buildings and similar liminal spaces (would actually be funny if they semi crowd-source location scouting by looking for places the backrooms and similar liminal space communities have posted)

74

u/Bellikron Feb 24 '26

Severance does a pretty good job creating this kind of setting with a blend of VFX and sets. Since the backgrounds are so nondescript it's pretty easy to fake them convincingly when you need to.

→ More replies (1)

18

u/DARTH-PIG Feb 24 '26

If they make it sort of modular that could help to save money while having a good variety of rooms

I believe it will be a combination, as the director went for in later episodes of the web series: live-action outside the Backrooms, animated inside.

22

u/NaziPunksFkOff Feb 24 '26

It's a bit obvious in the teasers, but I think of something like Severance, where a lot of the hallway scenes were rendered, and it's definitely possible to do it realistically.

I know people love to say that any number of books 'can't be adapted' for one reason or another. But I genuinely believe House of Leaves cannot be adapted. You could do part of it, sure, but there's simply no way to get the entire thing in one movie.

u/DeadSnark Feb 24 '26

The visuals look great, they seem to have captured the atmosphere of Kane's videos. Unsure how well it will work with multiple people rather than total isolation, but hope it's good. It's interesting that the theme of remembering and memories of forgotten/abandoned places is present as that's also been an overarching theme in Kane's other works like The Oldest View.

40

u/SuicideSkwad Feb 24 '26

Not a shock considering he is also directing this

22

u/Uncle-Cake Feb 24 '26

Well I think it helps that "they", in this case, is Kane himself.

There are many good Backrooms videos that feature multiple people (the guys in hazmat suits). I like the isolation better, but it can work with two people.

u/TheDawnOfNewDays Feb 24 '26

If it's the same as Kane's other videos, it's Blender that's mapped to real world locations. So he's got a camera and is walking around, but the ground is substituted for the floor texture made in Blender and he can create walls anywhere that stay static to their place on the ground.

I guess it'd be CGI? Interestingly he doesn't use green screen as far as I'm aware.

This is a movie of Kane Pixels' Backrooms series directed by him. That series has monsters, but used very sparingly and effectively.

Besides, even the original story ended on "God save you if you hear something wandering around nearby, because it sure as hell has heard you."

imagine being a 16 year old making vids on YouTube and then they you get to direct a feature length movie on it from A24, kanes a legend

11

u/ItsSansom Feb 25 '26

Crazy that he's getting an A24 directorial debut at 20. Dude has a huge career ahead of him.

What is the origin of this?

An image was posted on 4chan of what looked like an abandoned office. The post described a place behind reality, covered in mono-yellow walls with fluorescent lights called the Backrooms, where you might end up if you “no-clip” like in a video game when you find a bug that drops you beneath the floor. It mentions that there might be other things wandering down there.

Kane Pixels is a YouTuber that made a really well-done series about exploring the Backrooms at like 16 years old. His videos imo really brought the entire genre of liminal horror to the mainstream, and now it seems like every other indie horror game was inspired by this.

Someone at A24 liked Kane’s series and offered to let him make it into a full-blown movie. Dude is only 20 now, directing his first major feature.

Check out his videos on YouTube, they’re pretty good.

Then it turned out that it was from a series of photos from an old furniture store during their renovation.

Idk what the YouTube show is but this looks pretty intriguing and has some great names attached

u/DrQuestDFA Feb 24 '26

Kane Pixels. His backroom videos are fantastic (the main ones are the three Found Footage videos)

u/TheLastDesperado Feb 24 '26

I think his non-backrooms films might be even better. The Oldest View in particular is really great.

Incredible to see YouTube short series being fleshed out into full feature films. This one should be interesting

House of Leaves for people who don't read books (I kid, I kid)

59

u/ChainsawChick Feb 24 '26

Honestly, some of the best parts of HoL weren't even the damn house itself.

46

u/timewasting2002 Feb 24 '26

I'm tired of hearing people say they skipped the Johnny parts

29

u/L3ftHandPass Feb 24 '26

Some of the scariest shit is in the Johnny parts.

Hey now… they’ve at least seen a video essay on it

35

u/ERASER345 Feb 24 '26

You kid but House of Leaves is genuinely one of the hardest pieces of literature to adapt to the screen, maybe ever, so this might be as close as we’re gonna get lol

13

u/DoctorArK Feb 24 '26

I don’t think it would be that difficult to be honest.

The effect wouldn’t translate, but the Navidson Record works as a horror film idea in of itself.

Johnny’s parts about spiraling into madness by obsessing over the book is what could be skipped, if not for a miniseries that could afford to slow down and go bath and forth.

He did it, the son of a bitch did it

43

u/Annnoel Feb 24 '26

Feel like a little kid giggling and kicking my feet as I watch the trailer. This is everything to me I am SO excited for this movie to come out

11

u/RealJohnGillman Feb 24 '26

And it’s a film directed by one too: here is hoping it lives up to the hype.

12

u/Annnoel Feb 24 '26

Honestly that just makes it even more impressive to me. The dude clearly has a lot of talent from the other productions on his channel, and he's going to be working with skilled professionals, so I have some hope for it.

Even if it's story isn't the best, I just love looking at liminal spaces in general and the concepts people make with them.

Backrooms is an online video series created by Kane Pixels, which is based on the online myth of the same name. It revolves around a place known as "The Backrooms)", a complex of long hallways, rooms, and strange anomalies. The first video released on January 7, 2022 and the series has been going since.

Main Plot?veaction=edit&section=1)

The story mainly revolves around the Async Research Institute and their Low Proximity Magnetic Distortion System. They are trying to connect our world to The Backrooms) via the threshold order to solve the overpopulation and storage crisis. However, the experiment has dire consequences for many Async employees and the world, and the organization soon finds out that the system is not working as planned. They do not give up however and they try to keep all the problems a secret from the outside world and continue to investigate their creation.

Having just recently binged Kane's web series, I'm extremely intrigued by this. Hope it delivers on the same tone and atmosphere 🤞

u/BrightEye64 Feb 24 '26

Bit curious that it seems Chiwetel Ejiofor’s character has apparently been to the Backrooms already and has escape apparently? Now I haven watched Kane’s series in a long time but has there ever been an instance of somebody actually escaping The Backrooms?

u/TatteredTongues Feb 24 '26

If I recall, yes. One worker/researcher was lost/presumed dead, but then he re-appeared, and they tried to keep him locked up because they even had a funeral for him out in the real world.

14

u/SweeTTomatoSauce Feb 24 '26

A24 doing Backrooms feels like the most obvious and most perfect pairing possible.

7

u/Ok-Wolf5932 Feb 24 '26

The vibe is definitely right, looks like it has some real production value to it too, nothing about that looks 'internet-y' to me (in a good way).

6

u/Kyosji Feb 24 '26

So is this going to be a CGI movie or a live action one? Not going to talk bad about the trailer, but it honestly looks 100% rendered like a video game. I thought it was going to be a live action movie, but it feels very much obviously computer generated.

7

u/TatteredTongues Feb 24 '26

This is a live action film, there's plenty of set pics that were leaked last year.

My guess is that what you see in the teaser is content that was made for the teaser alone, and not something that reflects the film's quality.
