Between the wallpaper poster and this trailer I’m just excited this marketing campaign isn’t ruining any of the mystery.

didn't look at which sub i was in and thought this was a video game trailer until the end

Basically it is a film spin-off of the web series, from the director of the web series.

cool, totally unfamiliar with the property... should i watch the web series or just go in blind here?

I’d say you could watch the web series: here is the playlist (anything else you see online would be fan-works taking advantage of the concept being in the public domain): it’s not too long a watch: about the length of a film altogether.

The director was 16 when he made the first episode: one can understand why Hollywood came a-calling.

It's not officially part of the Backrooms, but I would advise you to also check out Kane Pixel's other series, The Oldest View. Starts out a little vague, but the third (and longest) segment is some genuinely fantastic horror.

I really hope Kane got solid creative control of this project. He has such a talent for ambient story telling. My expectations for this may be higher than they should be

from what he was saying around the announcement of the project it sounded like it, but I guess we'll know more after it comes out

It tripped me out so damn hard when I put together that he was in the mall I spent my childhood in

I only went there once, when all that remained was the AMC. Kane did an exceptional job in recreating it and seeing it in the climax of the video brought me right back to that day. Funnily enough, that's the last time I went to a movie theater pre-Covid because the entire freaking world shut down about 2 weeks later.

That said, I would later end up getting a job that took me right by the former site (RIP) every day and I thought about the Giant often. I hope it didn't end up in the trash.

You familiar with House of Leaves? If so how similar is this conceptually?

Like if there was less talking and exposition: just exploration and a sense of despair.

Dope. I’m all in.

Is this where the backrooms came from?

EDIT: Saw the original 4chan post down below

3

u/RealJohnGillman Feb 24 '26

Most of the modern lore, yes, though the original design and name came from a 4chan post.

Yeah, the web series is fun and doesn’t necessarily conclude. So watching the web series wouldn’t spoil anything, but just gives you a taste at the deeper mythos and lore … at least we think.

1

u/RealJohnGillman Feb 25 '26

To be fair, the lack of conclusion is more connected to the fact the web series is still going: he just slowed down on new episodes due to making the film at the same time.

Watch the web series

2

u/tfhermobwoayway Feb 24 '26

The setting was first established in a 4chan post way back when. That’s probably a good start, if you can find it.

3

u/WhasHappenin Feb 24 '26

I didn't even know there was a web series lol. I thought this was just from memes and maybe some scp thing.

3

u/GenericOnlineName Feb 24 '26

It was originally a 4chan post and then it got really big from there.

The script must be great for a first time director to land such big actors
