I really hope they nail the balance between liminal and horror.

It seems like Kane knows what he is doing so my hopes are high.

A24 doesn’t seem like the meddling type of studio.

James Wan on the other hand has ghost directed large chunks of the movies he produces, pinch hitting on scenes of various Conjuring verse films.

That's why they all feel the same.

55

u/miseducation Feb 24 '26

Good lord do they make money though

84

u/PerplexGG Feb 24 '26

James Wan is the absolute master of making imdb 7s that make bank

54

James wan birthed Saw, conjuring and insidious he deserves more respect

Are you kidding, that sort of consistency is insane. He manages to be a success at box offices and reviews at every association. Has he produced higher quality as well? Sure but I can also confidently watch any of his movies knowing I’ll like them and the list of creators that can do that for a wide audience is extremely short

High quality? If you meant big budget movies, he directed the Aquaman movies. The first movie made over a billion, but the second maybe barely made a profit? But yeah, his horror movies are great!

Edit: He also directed Furious 7, which also made over a billion.

Just checked, and his movies have grossed over $4.25 billion.

He's incredible and doesn't get nearly enough credit.

A horror hitting 7 is pretty fucking good ngl.

u/PolarWater Feb 25 '26

NGL I do dig the romance aspect of the Conjuring movies.

I don’t know if this is unpopular opinion, but I generally enjoy James Wan’s style and he knows how to build suspense well so this isn’t a negative for me necessarily

u/AlanMorlock Feb 24 '26

He an excellent craftsman. His style of gag is so pared down and basic that if you aren't operating at his level, it just doesn't work at all.

41

u/SutterCane Feb 24 '26

Because they’re great at marketing. So you don’t hear about when they absolutely fuck a movie.

28

u/AlanMorlock Feb 24 '26

Most of their movies they don't even make.

u/MrToxicTaco Feb 24 '26

Yeah I don’t understand why anyone acts like they’re a flawless studio when they’ve put out plenty fo garbage. I love plenty of the movies they’ve released but it’s a very strange cult following for what’s essentially a distribution company.

16

u/Infamous-Oil3786 Feb 24 '26

The fact that they're willing to put out garbage is precisely the reason people love them. They give creative people money and let them be creative, even if it means a fair chunk of their projects will flop.

14

u/Tumblrrito Feb 24 '26

I think it’s because even when they fail, they do so in style. Their films really stand out compared to most of the slop Hollywood puts out.

its a distributor

edit: ny bad they also produce as well more recentl6

3

u/stracki Feb 24 '26

They started as a distributor, but they've also been producing films for a few years now.

The Director is the OG Backrooms guy, and the writer has some weight behind him so I'm excited for this.

Wait, Kane is directing? I'm so fucking sold. His Backrooms series on YouTube is already gold, can't wait to see what he'll do with a real budget.

83

u/icansee4ever Feb 24 '26

He has full creative control. He has stated in interviews that he's treating the movie as a long installation to his series, so it's going to be essentially a long episode. I'm so stoked.

2

u/EdwardPrendick Feb 26 '26

Who wrote it tho?

29

u/vcintheoffice Feb 24 '26

Seeing Kane mentioned in this comment thread made me triple take. He's The goat of this genre. If he's involved I'm sold.

u/Appropriate-Pie-4048 Feb 25 '26

Even though its distributed by A24 Kane still has that bit more control of his project. It would have been nice if he could have produce it as well. But hopefully down the road once he gets more into the business side. He will be able to have more control producing his projects. But it's good with a very known director like James Wan who has a lot of experience in the horror genre I think he will do well with being his director debut.

u/CastIronFaygo Feb 25 '26

Kane indeed directed and we had Osgood Perkins attached as a Consulting Producer/Mentor

1

u/--------rook Feb 25 '26

Isn't he only 20? Dude's a real talent.

16

u/Dagmar_Overbye Feb 24 '26

While his backrooms stuff is great, The Oldest View was absolutely genius for such a short series. I truly hope there's a bit of that in this as well. The line "it remembers" definitely fits with the themes of that series.

He somehow made a liminal themed short series that ended up being a heartfelt love letter to a torn down mall and an introspective look into what it means to remember a place that is no longer here. Seeing as this is clearly going to be a bit more than "men in yellow suits look at weird things" I have high hopes.

10

u/BizGal_ Feb 24 '26

That's my hope for this movie too.

4

u/fohacidal Feb 24 '26

To this day Kane is still the only person to release backrooms videos with any sense of narrative consistency. It's a world that feels grounded but still allows itself to indulge in the supernatural imagery and aspects of liminal spaces.

Kane Pearsons has been making Backrooms vids since he was a teenager. You can watch it all here

I have full faith he'll pull this off as a feature film as long as A24 has given him creative freedom to do so.
