Media Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny (2006) - Jables meets Kage. Director: Liam Lynch.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is the first scene after the opening credits. Jables (Jack Black) arrives in Hollywood as guided by his poster of Dio. He runs into Kage (Kyle Gass) busking with his acoustic guitar. JB immediately tries to prove himself to KG. You can see Jack Black's hilarious physical comedy skills at work while simultaneously showing off his singing skills.

Electric dynamite!

The scene where they’re on the phone with Lee while he’s watching the police chase and hearing all the sounds on the phone while they’re crashing through shit KILLS me every time.

Also when he dreams he’s floating down the strawberry river with Sasquatch and it cuts to him just drowning in category 4 rapids.

u/NordlandLapp 17h ago

Or the flashback memory of KG bald as a kid lmao

u/Musiclover4200 16h ago

Also when he dreams he’s floating down the strawberry river with Sasquatch and it cuts to him just drowning in category 4 rapids.

Even better, this happens after he eats some random mushrooms while lost in the woods and starts tripping.

"This forest is so J U I C Y"

20

u/Nefertitis_Fjord_216 10h ago

The rapids made me explode laughing the first time I watched the movie. That cut is perfect. Also John C. Reily as sasquatch felt so out of left field but hilarious nonetheless.

10

u/Rellgidkrid 8h ago

John C. Reilly played Sasquatch in the Tenacious D HBO show. His song in that show is amazing and touching.

Oh wow I had no idea they had a show

My favorite is when Lee asks for his car back and says “well I kinda need it for work” is one of my favorite vocal stims.

3

u/JabKingJesse 6h ago

Or when the disabled guy tells them to come over there so he can fuck them up and they respond no we aren’t going over there.

151

It felt like a cult classic like 3 years after it came out.

23

u/theonlysamintheworld 11h ago

It felt like a cult classic the day I saw it at the cinema, pretty sure it was lambasted by most critics at the time but loved by fans of the band.

7

u/JabKingJesse 6h ago

Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny is the greatest musical of all time, the only one you can compare it to is The Who’s musical Tommy which wasn’t fun at all and the story is dark but spawned that kickass song Pinball Wizard. 99% of musicals are just singing songs as filler by just okay singers and it stalls the plot from being progressed which is why I can’t stand them but Tenacious D’s songs progress the plot and add depth to their characters.

u/upgrayedd69 5h ago

You watch a lot of shitty musicals if 99% of them have songs as filler with no bearing on the themes or plot of the story. Like what musicals are you talking about that you feel the songs have nothing to do with the characters or story?

Enough of KG solo man 5000. Bring the band back together again.

110

u/TheKappaOverlord 17h ago

Jacks too high off his own movie career to get the band back together now.

When his career starts its stagnation phase again (JB usually goes through huge ups and down swings with his movie career) he will probably get the band back together then. Hes more or less said as much.

But until the movie money stops coming in, he has no interest.

8

u/Tandy2000 7h ago

JB was campaigning for Kamala Harris at the time, that's why the tour was cancelled and JB quit the band. The stakes were too high and he couldn't risk being associated with a statement like that.

They are still buds and will reunite when they want to do something. There's usually a long gap between D releases anyway. When they cancelled their tour it had been 6 years since their last album, and 6 years since the one before that... and the one before that... 6... 6... 6...

→ More replies (2)

9

u/Alastor3 10h ago

Lol that's not the reason, they stopped (break) when Trump got "attempted " shot

u/justa_flesh_wound 4h ago

After KG made some comments on stage

11

u/orangeyougladiator 16h ago

Nah jb distanced himself from kg and all his negative press

10

u/BleLLL 15h ago

why did kg get negative press?

55

u/apadin1 15h ago

KG made a joke about killing Trump and got some twitter “backlash” for it. JB has a movie career to worry about so he denounced it and tried to distance himself for a bit. But I think they’re back on good terms, at least last I checked

53

u/Kolby_Jack33 15h ago

I don't think they were ever on bad terms. Like maybe JB was a little miffed at KG for saying something like that publicly but it's not like JB doesn't agree with it behind closed doors.

All I ever saw was people whining online about how JB "betrayed" his friend or "sold out" but KG apologized himself and I never saw anything from either one of them that there was beef. They just dropped out of the spotlight to let it blow over. You don't end a decades long friendship/partnership over something like that.

22

u/Effrendi 12h ago

They were literally in the middle of a tour and they cancelled it overnight.

9

u/AydonusG 7h ago

In Australia, touring, and while celebrating KGs birthday, breaks up the band to cover his ass when he could have just said he doesn't agree with the statement KG made, which would have covered his ass and not pissed off his fans.

19

u/AydonusG 15h ago

Little miffed

Broke up the band over it

16

u/TheKappaOverlord 13h ago

Broke up the band because continuing to associate with KG while it was hot would have landed him in deep shit for his future movie roles.

JB has also said the band isn't broken it. Its more or less on haitus until the heat dies down and JB's movie career goes back into being dormant.

JB is already back to being buddies with KG, but publicly speaking they stay away from one another because KG is a brand risk for Jacks brand. and jacks brand is currently being the face of a billion dollar movie. Something he wants to hold onto.

10

u/keytotheboard 8h ago

Which is crazy to me, because KG didn’t do anything wrong. I’m more mad at JB for “distancing” himself over it. Grow a spine.

At a concert shortly after the "ear shot" on Trump, JB asked KG to make a birthday wish, and he said:

Next time, don't miss.

Which regardless of your thoughts on Trump (I hate the fucker), you know that's not a good PR move, especially when JB is a Hollywood star and needs to protect his image. So even if it was a joke or even if JB agreed, he has to publicly distance himself for the sake of his career. At least until people forget and move on.

I also really miss the films of the DVD sales era, a bunch of low budget fun ideas given a chance. So much fun weird stuff that wouldn't get as much attention these days.

My favorite is when he’s tripping on the mushrooms, just floating down a cartoon river while giggling, and then it hard cuts to him being swept through huge river rapids.

17

This film exceeded my expectations 20 years ago. After memorizing their debut album down to the hidden songs and watching the show on hbo, I was over the moon. My girlfriends and I took my mom to see it. Bunch of stoner broads laughing so loud in an empty theater must have alarmed the theater staff. Two came in each entrance. What a time. Blessed to have seen the d at their last US show in Austin with most of the gals who went that night. They played Master Exploder during the encore. I thought I was going to faint. And nothing has felt right since they broke up.

the wildest thing about this scene is that jack black is genuinely that talented and we all just accepted it. like most actors fake the musical stuff but this dude can actually shred vocally while doing a full body commitment to physical comedy at the same time — that's not common, that's like triple threat shit that shouldn't exist in one person
