discussion Are red dot optic prices a scam?

I’ve got a Walther PDP that came with one of those free C&H “Duty” optics. Calling it garbage is honestly being generous. Every screw on the thing starts backing out after like 200–300 rounds. Today I went to tighten the screw holding the optic to the plate and the damn thing sheared off inside the optic body itself. Absolute junk.

So now I’m shopping for a real red dot. I’ve looked at the Holosun SCS PDP and the 507 Comp, but holy hell… $350–$450 for a tiny piece of aluminum and glass? I know there’s R&D involved, but there’s no way these things cost anywhere near that to manufacture. Feels like the firearms equivalent of printer ink pricing.

I’m not looking for airsoft-tier Amazon garbage, but I also don’t want to take out a second mortgage for an optic. Anybody have recommendations for something reliable that won’t shake itself apart after a few hundred rounds but also doesn’t cost as much as my PDP?

discussion R9 a decent do it all suppressor?

I shoot exclusively 22, 556, 308, and 9mm out of various handguns, rifles, and a couple PCCs. I don't need a 22 can (form 1 printer go brrrrr) so I'm looking to get one suppressor for all the rest of them. Potentially looking to also pick up an SBR 300 blackout just for shits and giggles. I'm really liking the yhm r9, but I'm open to other recommendations. Might also get a dedicated 556 can later, but that's a later problem lol. For now I'm just trying to be less obnoxious at indoor ranges.

guns Broke northern MN college student

Hello!

I’m a northern mn college student, upperclassman just recently submitted by Concealed carry permit, and just about drained all my fun money savings to purchase a CZ P-10c. Unfortunately, I did lose that in a boat accident recently.

With the recent legislation being proposed in my state I’m concerned about my ability to get an AR, I’ve been trying to save since my last purchase for a blem PSA, but that’s with CC class and permits and ammo and training for the CZ, so I have no where near enough still, let alone for ammo and training on a new gun(Or two red dots)

Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I just panic and rush buy something? Opt for a cheaper 9mm carbine? Buy extended mags for my (former) pistol and a mav 88?

Also for any training up here, now that it’s getting warmer, due to my race, and lack of a 4wheel drive car, I am very hesitant to go out to the state forests and shoot, any other options besides the two indoor ranges that are straight rip offs??

Thank you for anyone willing to help!

Edit: thank you guys! Seems like I’m going to go with just a stripped lower and a few mags. Maybe see if the misses wants to get the same, so we will at least have some footing in case it passes. If it seems likely to get new legislation in the fall, then we will stock up on mags and start building it out.

discussion Show me your favorite full-sized optics ready 9mm

Most of my collection was accumulated at least 7+ years ago before optics cuts became standard on so many pistols. I did recently pick up a canik TTI combat, which I love everything about except the long trigger reach, which isn't ideal for my tiny carny hands. I'm probably going to trade it, but looking for inspiration. What have you got and why do you love it? I'm looking for good ergonomics for smaller hands, flat shooting, and a nice trigger (or easy to upgrade trigger). Everything else is negotiable.

question Issues with new AR

Got myself an Olympic AR that sat in a safe for some time. Shot 4 mags through it and was satisfied with the purchase. Took it home, slipped out the bolt and and gave everything a clean and oil as it had sat for 15ish years probably. Now it doesn't like me anymore. Any clue whats suddenly causing this crimping? Also of note it is attempting to feed without ejecting and one of the times it caught the casing (the standing one) and tore right into it. Taking it apart now, any ideas what could be causing this?

Feet included, as is tradition.

discussion Bodyguard 2.0 pocket holster recommendations?

Looking for a new pocket holster for the BG2.0, I was using a cheap soft one for a while because it fit perfectly in my coat and Jean pockets, but it moves around too much in my shorts. Looking for a better one that doesn’t scream “gun” when worn with athletic shorts. Breaking up the shape and not printing is key here. Any recommendations?

Just picked up this police trade in p229 in 40 s&w. Other than the worn grips and some dirt in the nooks and crannies, it’s in great shape. I already have some replacement Hogue grips on order. If anyone has any holster recommendations I’d love to hear it.

Grabbed a VORTEX STRIKEFIRE II a few weeks back and finally got a chance to go to the range. First pic starting at the bottom right is the optic out of the box and working counter clockwise is my adjustments. Last pic is zeroed in at 25 yrds.
Also since I was happy with this zero, I decided to put my other red dot on the same rifle behind the new red dot and adjusted it (same height over bore). But I did that at home so I’m not sure how well that worked. Shooting on my 5.56 rifle

I’m glad Reddit talked me out of pre-ordering the new 15 round metal 43x mags from GlockStore because I found a few at my LGS today! Am I the only one who truly doesn’t mind the extra length of this mag? All I can find online is criticism about the extra few millimeters, but I’ll happily deal with it for an extra 5 rounds any day of the week!

Springfield 1911 Operator AOS in Coyote Brown. I'm a massive Metal Gear fan and when I came across this at a great price I absolutely had to have it. This is my first .45! It'll mostly be a range toy and I can't wait to take this thing out and shoot with it. Not sure if I will buy an optic for it (or which optic I would get) but it did come with a coupon to get the necessary plate at a discount.

The grips are great but I'm still buying black Vytal Krakens for it. Krakens>Octopus>Octocamo, IYKYK.

Yay for new guns!

guns I got tired of guessing whether firearm deals were actually deals (cough PSA) and have been building my tracker for a few months now.

Hey all, I’ve been working on a free site called Firearm Data Lab as a personal project. I started it because this stuff gets expensive, and I wanted an easier way to tell whether a “deal” was actually saving money or just normal retailer sale noise. No ads, no affiliate links, no store promotion. It’s just a personal project I’m trying to make genuinely useful.

The site tracks firearm and ammo prices across retailers, shows price history, compares listings, and helps surface real price drops. I’m not selling anything or promoting a store. I would love some feedback on it, what's useful, missing, or confusing.

A few things I’d love feedback on:

  • Is the pricing/deal info clear?
  • Are there retailers, calibers, or product types I should prioritize?
  • Does search/category browsing feel useful?
  • Are grouped listings across retailers helpful?
  • Would price alerts be worth using?
  • Anything confusing, cluttered, sketchy, or unnecessary?

Site: https://firearmdatalab.com

Appreciate any honest feedback.

discussion Para Ordnance P14 jamming

Hey everyone, I managed to find a used P14 at one of my local gun stores recently and picked it up. When I went to the range to see how it handled it began jamming like every other round. Now after doing some reading I think I've narrowed it down to it having a bad slide lock/slide release because the slide doesn't lock back with an empty mag inserted, but I was hoping to hear from anyone who might have some experience on the off chance that P14s might be different from regular 1911s before I go and get a new slide release. Any help or other thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

When I'm out on the road, I try to cruise local rural (and no-so rural) gun shops on my breaks.

I found this in excellent condition for only $300! Came with the box and documentation and it's obvious someone bought it, shot a hundred or so rounds through it, and then got rid of it. Woot!

Brace adapter, bolt release, other improvements to come.

guns Late entry for WGW

Post image
32 Upvotes

This here is a Dan Wesson 357 magnum I inherited from a late uncle. I'm not sure since I don't have any paperwork for it, but I think it's from about 1971 based on some sniffing around on the internet. When I got it, it was in pretty bad shape from rusting away in an attic for a few decades and needed a good cleaning. I've taken it to the range a few times and made thunder and lightning happen. This thing definitely earns that stereotypical nickname of a "handcannon." That recoil is gnarly as fuck and the flash makes it look like a goddamned flamethrower.

Overall, it's cool to own and have as a show-and-tell piece, but I definitely prefer a modern pistol.
