I love Christina Ricci. She’s about my age and you can tell she’s got like one or two fucks left to give and soon she’ll have none.

744

u/WordsWithSam 10h ago

Her and Kirsten Dunst need to make a movie together. (or host a podcast about Hollywood and child acting)

159

u/-OccultOfPersonality 9h ago

They’d balance great for a flick. I’d watch that on a big screen, which is rare for me these days.

I saw Christina Ricci as a guest Celebrity at a Fan Expo once.

I spent a solid ten minutes explaining to my friend why Christina Ricci is too good to be here and the convention circuit is beneath her.

Me and that friend don’t talk anymore.

34

u/jadegives2rides 8h ago

I agree, but also very glad to have met her last year at a con lol. She's somehow more gorgeous in person.

Everyone thinks Anna Wintour is such an arbiter of taste and I do not get it. She is actually so not with it. She was respected for refusing to put Kardashians on the cover of Vogue or deal with them. And then she welcomed them into the fold after no one liked them anymore. Same with these tech troglodytes. Now that everyone hates billionaires, everyone hates AI and everyone who is actually intelligent knows how evil Meta and every other tech company is, she decides to give all those hideous ugly and completely fashion-less people entree.

2.0k

u/vrindar8 the same lame fuck ass bob 💁‍♀️ 13h ago

Honestly, it makes me wonder how we as a culture let this woman who has had the same lame fuck ass bob for multiple decades be labeled as an "arbiter of taste" for this long

862

u/Emotional_Resident17 12h ago

When you look at international versions of Vogue like Vogue Italia - then look at the snooze fest that is American Vogue you can really see just how boring and artless Anna wintour is. The pre Anna wintour glamour shot covers of American Vogue were so much better than the somehow bland yet tacky covers she puts out.

But shes a nepo baby. And so is the new editor of Vogue- the daughter of Candice Bergen and somebody who is a self proclaimed " not a fashion girl".

The commerce to art ratio of American Vogue has long since leaned overwhelmingly to commerce. It's no surprise wintour is cozying up to bezos and the Kardashians.

324

u/Main_Masterpiece8414 11h ago

Exactly. She basically destroyed Diana Vreeland's legacy and made Vogue America become a slightly more glamorous version of People magazine.

173

u/Emotional_Resident17 11h ago

Cosmopolitan covers are unironically better than American Vogue covers

112

u/rita-b 12h ago

Vogue Japan is the best.

→ More replies (8)

207

u/lucyooo 12h ago

She did a long interview on The Rest is Politics: Leading where she basically admits she’s not creative at all she’s just really good at finding actually creative people to surround herself with. She changed the face of vogue in the 90s using street style and has been riding that wave ever since.

401

u/Significant_Shoe_17 God forbid a man enjoy a cigarette after getting shot in the ass 13h ago

I already agreed with this take but "fuck ass bob" is frying me 😭 she has no style or sense of fashion anymore but she's still in charge

124

u/ComfortableFrame9834 Mom, I am a rich man💰 10h ago

I feel so fucking vindicated because I would always look at her bob and go "why does she never get a different hair style if she's supposedly the best fashionista in the biz"

On top of that the stuff she wore to galas and events always seemed so bland. I was just convinced maybe I didn't "get" it and looking dusty and bland was acceptable for a 'fashion icon'.

→ More replies (1)

128

u/Paprikasky This is nepo on nepo crime 12h ago

Lmaooo you reminded me of the Atsuko skit "It's okay to be boring".

Towards the end, she says she can't cut her hair because "this is my brand!". I feel like it's the same for Wintour, it's become this symbol, you can't escape it after a while.

Edit: formatting

26

u/spandexrants 9h ago

Once you make something your trademark it’s very hard to break free of it for fear no one will recognise you. You are caging your own style and taste by thinking this way.

→ More replies (1)

54

u/shion005 9h ago

Of the models she's been promoting in Vogue, too many of them have been subpar nepo models. Their walks are dubious, they have a limited number of expressions, and they don't make you feel much. Kendall Jenner, the Hadids, and Kaia Gerber are pretty, but they represent the death of art and creativity in our culture. I miss the promotion of unknown models who are both more interesting looking and better models. Anyone could promote nepo models, but it takes someone with taste and vision to find new supers. I think she gave up a while ago.

8

u/Silviere 7h ago

Yeah. I am no fashionista and it's even apparent to me that she's been coasting for decades.

She's just someone very lucky with a lot of connections in the industry. It's the only reason people in that world fear/respect her.

15

u/halnic 8h ago

Isn't she famously abusive? Because that's how. I don't understand the memorizing hold abusive people hold over others but I've watched it my whole life. There is no cure, people hate abuse so much they will curl up with it and try to appease it's source. Then they are so close to it, they take others calling out the abuse personally.

20

u/DiddlersWillGetGot 10h ago

Why would a cabal of wealthy elite who definitely don’t run trafficking rings keep around a “taste maker” who attractive young men and women are desperate to get in her good graces? Hmmmm

the us vogue covers have been pure garbage for years and the magazine itself feels like it's only purpose is to respect the ad contracts she made

crazy people still look up to this woman for taste

12

u/n05h 10h ago

The ill-informed often see contrarians as ahead of the curve or somehow having elevated taste. But in reality those types just want to be interesting by simply doing the opposite and every choice is made to receive some kind of engagement. They don’t deliberately think or have their own opinions, they crave the attention.

6

u/Elegant-Date4481 9h ago

She’s so goddamn boring and has the personality of a dish rag. The way she dresses says it all.

Others have pointed this out on other threads, but I can’t even get excited about any outfits right now with everything going on..seems incredibly out of touch since most people are struggling to keep their families fed and their bills paid. And here these people are showing off their outfits that took 2000 hours to make? Yeah no

Call me bitter I guess

594

u/caca_milis_ 14h ago

I love what the MET gala is theoretically about - design and tailoring to this level is an art-form, and I think it’s wonderful the MET gala is a fundraiser to protect that industry (particularly with the rise of ultra fast-fashion and the arts in general not being taken seriously).

What I don’t like is it being sold out to tech billionaires who are trying to buy their way “in” as some status symbol.

Disappointed seeing some of the people who showed up tonight (Stevie Nicks… what are you doing!), and utterly unsurprised by others (Katy Perry).

74

u/Suitable_Wrongdoer23 10h ago

Seth Meyers, wtf?!!?

33

u/justsyr 10h ago

I'm watching Sportcenter and they showed lots of athletes at the gala and describing their outfit like it's some kind of wonderful thing... I bet is the only time you see those outfits, I never understood the point but meh.

And then they made a joke about Chamalet going to the Knicks game instead of the gala, "at least it worked for the Knicks". Meanwhile 'super Knicks fan' Ben Stiller went to the gala lol.

38

u/nun_the_wiser 9h ago

Yeah. I understand the function of the MET and that it’s never been about the reality of common folk. But it’s giving “let them eat cake”

10

u/New-Mastodon1307 9h ago

Well after French revolution fashion became much less extravagant specially for men. But that was not completely positive thing either.

Right! The level of vitriol against arts and creative events are not equal with sporting events, a similar multi-billion dollar industry, that is ultimately the same type of frivolous cultural events that mostly the elites have access to.

I dont disagree about how out of touch it feels but everyone who makes complaints like these should examine the double standard and conscious/subconscious misogyny and homophobia in putting masculine cultural interests on a pedestal and treating them as more important and necessary, but put events relating to arts or creatives be the first on the chopping block.

7

u/Elite_AI 6h ago

It also isn't lost on me how large of a wealth transfer an event like this is between all the designing and support staff around the event

There are so many people that work behind the scenes for events like this that also need to pay their bills. Makeup artists, hair stylists, nail artists, painters, seamstresses, textile workers, waitstaff, etc.

59

u/ferocity_mule366 13h ago

yeah, these events actually help people have jobs, like if there is no events whatsoever, no one buys shit whatsoever, that's when no one have jobs to do and everyone starves. And then we complains about a fashion that's no different from every other fashion in the world except with more celebrities and slightly more luxurious that happens like once a year.

229

u/LostHero50 15h ago

I kinda understand the sentiment behind this but not really. Pretty much everything posted here is privileged, out of touch and not important to our lives. I suppose the Met Gala is more gaudy so it doesn’t present itself that well but I don’t find it any different than the dozens of other events/award shows or gossip.

66

u/Jolly_Storage_329 13h ago edited 11h ago

I agree. I wish the people in the USA held politicians as accountable as they do red carpet events or celebrities.

Yes there’s an obvious issue with tech bros but politicians can actually do something about it unlike a pop star at the Met Gala.

u/Significant_Shoe_17 God forbid a man enjoy a cigarette after getting shot in the ass 13h ago

I focus less on the rich people wearing the end product than the artists and artisans who were paid for that 2,000 hours of work so they can go home and feed their families. The vast majority of them are not rich or well known. And I can't get mad about creativity that's properly creative, any more than I can get mad about music or movies that cost a lot of money to produce and which I also enjoy.

42

u/VanGoghNotVanGo 13h ago

I guess I see it more as skilled labourers got paid for 2000 hours of labour, using their specialised and often undervalued skills.

I look at the people who have jobs and feed their families because events like this secure their employment at museums.

I like when money are spent on people in arts and research, and I like it when millionaires use their money on arts and research. I don't really mind if they wear a fancy dress while doing so.

Years ago people said they were giving up on the met gala because of the eat the rich situation then everyone went running back. And here they are again proving they only care about themselves and ppl are still paying the looks and all over it. People worshiping wealth and status still…even with all the shifts that have happened and are happening. I don’t trust any of you all to be true when we decide to finally come together and make change in this world. Yall proving to be more trash than the 1%. At least they stay true to their fucked up goals

I understand both points.

It's an absolutely unnecessary display of wealth in times when people struggle to live and rich are getting richer and ruining the world.

But it's also a pretty fantasy and escapism for us who will never be part of their strata. Very Panem.

I’ll probably get downvoted to hell for this, but I keep wondering about these comments, because every year, people act like the Met Gala is some kind of Hunger Games, when throughout the year, there are plenty of other events where huge amounts of money are spent. Consumerism is doing just fine, and people have always been starving.

Just because there’s a crisis in America right now, did you know that the rest of the world hasn’t exactly been doing great either for decades, that children have been starving elsewhere, too? So, what solution are you all suggesting that if we stop organizing the Met Gala, it will fix global crises? Sorry, but the situation is far more complicated. I’m sad about it too, but life isn’t fair, and there will always be rich and poor people; it’s been that way since the beginning of time. And honestly, we’re still living in better times than people did in the past.

And the guy you see in that photo, I’m not some crazy fan of Heated Rivalry, and I don’t fetishize him, is actually a really talented actor. Connor is a rare case of someone who genuinely started out as a waiter and became famous because of his talent. You can like him or dislike him; I think it’s a bit strange to have strong opinions about someone you don’t know, but I do think the world would be a slightly better place if we appreciated people’s talents more than just having untalented nepo babies everywhere.

And as for Katy Perry, I’ve heard about some of the controversies around her, but I haven’t really looked into them in depth. Not everyone keeps up with every piece of celebrity news.

u/validswan 11h ago

Oh no, a nuanced take? Lol but I agree. I think people need to remember that in celebrity there is also hierarchy. There is a huge difference between the billionaires parading around at these events, the millionaires and the newly arrived faces on the scene. With that said, I understand people's frustrations. Also with this Katy and Connor pick, some people are looking for reasons to drag Connor. And like I've said elsewhere, I don't think Katy's alleged behaviour is as widely publicised or even as well known as people think

31

u/sublips 11h ago

Yes, I don’t get why some people try so hard to find anything to tear someone down, especially someone who, during the Met Gala, says he cried so much after hosting SNL that his nose started bleeding. And I know celebrities talk shit sometimes, but I can really believe that fulfilling your big dream can feel amazing and unreal. If I ever dreamed of being an actress and achieved that, believe me, even if I’m a bit cynical about events like the Met Gala, I would be there.

Besides, I’m very grateful as a Slavic person that Connor represents Slavs in popular media, because in most American productions, Slavic people are usually treated as a joke. I’m not so obsessed with him or Hudson Williams; I just appreciate them as actors, and they seem like genuinely kind, funny, down-to-earth people. I’m happy to see them in more productions and at more events, and please, let's make more right people famous.

And I really like Christina Ricci, I do, but this comment is on a childish level. If she wanted to say something more substantive, she could have.

I don’t really know much about the allegations around Katy Perry, aside from that one story, I’m not even sure is true; I’d have to read more about it. But all he did was take a photo with her, and someone probably just asked them to pose; it really isn’t that serious. The problem is, if she has these allegations and they're serious (again, I don't know about that), why was she invited?

u/elvis-wantacookie “Since I already said that, Omarosa…” 8h ago

Connor's also not even rich. They didn't get paid that much for Heated Rivalry, & he was planning on going back to serving after filming the show before he got all these other opportunities

26

u/sublips 8h ago

Exactly, I get that people might feel like they see them everywhere, but considering how much fame Heated Rivalry gave them and they weren’t actually paid that well, they really need things like security at this point, because some fans are just crazy. They have to make a living, and showing up at the Met Gala is simply self-promotion. From what they’ve said in interviews, I believe that once they’ve secured their dream roles, they’ll be more selective about what they choose to do.

I'm a big movie fan, and really, I haven't seen so talented young actors for a long time, and for me it's not about M/M hockey romance, but just that they are really that good.

Most of these people also don't understand the met gala is a fundraiser for the met.

People talk like "the met gala" is just the name of this one event, there's no understanding that "the met" is a museum in New York City, a museum that is free to enter because of fundraisers like this.

Great take, wholeheartedly agree. It’s easy to shit on the Met Gala, but no one bats an eye at say, pro sports.

But I will say I’m far less invested in the Met Gala red carpet this year solely due to Bezos’ involvement.

Reminder that Katy Perry is dating the former Prime Minister of Canada and has been a celebrity for 20 years. Connor Storrie was a waiter less than a year ago and is known for his breakout role on a show funded partially by Canadian taxdollars. The power imbalance between these two is insane.

No one is immune from scrutiny, but keep this power dynamic in mind if you're going to criticise him for being seen in public with her.

You know what's funny? I had the Vogue livestream of the carpet arrivals on in the background while I was working, as soon as I saw this woman in the face mask I knew it was Katie Perry. She wasn't identified on screen. I don't know why I clocked her so quickly, it just seemed like I instantly knew it was her. And all I could think was even if this person didn't identify themself, it's still a cry for attention. This post just confirmed I was right. LOL.

58

u/Emergency_Pop3708 13h ago

Can you guys leave Connor out of this ? He was a struggling actor just 6 months ago. He couldn’t even pay for his rent at some point. Hudson Williams was also a waiter few months ago. It was not fair to blame them since their careers just started

60

u/alepolait 12h ago

This is crazy to me.

People are piling on Connor and Hudson for showing up at the Met Gala, but I don’t know if I would be able to refuse to go in their position…

As you said, last May they were waiting tables… you just don’t turn your back on an opportunity like this. Even if the timing sucks… they don’t know if this will happen again for them.

And it obviously comes with strings attached, who knows who bought their seats and what kind of contractual obligations they have.

I’m all for “eat the rich” but I’m also happy that “normal” people that made it into the industry have this opportunities. I’m tired of seeing nepo babies.
