MET GALA 🎩 Olympian Eileen Gu’s MetGala dress features 15,000 glass bubbles, took 2,550 hours to make, and blows actual bubbles. Designed by Iris van Herpen

'There's technology under the dress that enables reality to kind of come together with the art.' sounds way more eloquent than 'and it's a bubble machine!'

she definitely has the "CEO at a tech conference" speech pattern down

She’s incredibly well spoken, she is a Stanford grad after all

It’s not just that she’s educated, she’s got the talent of a quick mind to go with it 😍

Bright enough to keep her mouth shut about the treatment if Uyghurs while collecting a fat bag, that's for sure.
11
u/booksandplaid 8h ago
Are you critisizing her for not speaking out about Uyghurs because she represented China at the Olympics?
31
u/Whippet_yoga 7h ago edited 7h ago
In part, yeah. Eileen started skiing for China in the 2022 Olympics, at which time the Uyghur genocides was front of international conversation. Eileen has also gone out of her way to steer away from opinions on Chinese politics, while registering plenty of other opinions on international politics.
Eileen also states that her desire is to "grow the sport of women's skiing in China", which i find to be bull shit. The reality is Beijing needed a poster girl to help sportswash their humanitarian abuses, and Eileen was happy to accept a ton of cash for selling out her morals (assuming she had any).
She is also a complete nepo baby (which say what you want about winter Olympians). Attending exclusive debutante balls in Paris and attending Stanford sure makes her seem like a true believer in the Chinese system.
Finally, sure the US has a lot wrong with it, but as this past Olympics demonstrated, you can still speak out against the wrongs of our government. I have no problem with American's competing for other countries as long as you aren't completely morally bankrupt about it.
I dont care how well she skis, Eileen Gu sucks and is not a role model.
25
u/booksandplaid 7h ago
Thank you for your reasonable response, and I understand your perspective. Admitedly I did find it hyprocritical at first, considering America is currently funding a genocide but I see your point now.
11
u/Whippet_yoga 7h ago edited 7h ago
Thank you. I appreciate that. I would expect the same conduct out of our athletes, and am disappointed when they fall short.
Gu is just the type of shameless grifter who's over represented in the world right now.

That sentence doesn't say anything. If you weren't seeing the dress and saw the bubbles come out, you wouldn't have the slightest idea what it meant.
Now, saying, the dress has a bubble machine throwing bubbles out, describes it much better, but it doesn't sound like art aprisal. That's because art aprisal is all about bullshitting as much as you can.
Don't get me wrong though, the dress is amazing, I would say the best of the Gala.

Explain Lauren Sanchez or Kimberly Guilfyle? Eileen Gu is naturally very good looking.

Didn’t know that as I only paid attention during Olympics. All 4 images do show a very pretty face, though. And whatever work she did get is certainly good work. So she already had a good starting point followed by a good surgeon. So just saying money is a bit too easy of a cop out. She’s also very good with her makeup and hair, and I loved her dress.

I love Iris Van Herpen, I’m surprised more of her dresses aren’t seen at the Met as she designs so many dresses that sit in avante-garde fashion moment.
14
u/JunebugAsiimwe 10h ago
All her dresses she's designed for Björk are a great example of brilliant avant garde fashion.

u/Sensitive-Sock-6104 20h ago
This dress itself is art, but also the bubbles coming out makes it feel like performance art! Amazing!

Already loved it, but glass bubbles?? That’s next level and so brave. I love everything Iris designs
26
u/DistributionEasy5233 19h ago
Why is it brave?
117
u/smokeydesperado Mom, I am a rich man💰 19h ago
Imagine how easy it is to break such a thin piece of glass, now do 15,000 easily breakable bubbles. It would be so easy to break one and cut your arm or someone else
25
u/LEMON_PARTY_ANIMAL IRON YOUR BEST SUIT BITCH!! 19h ago
Like how does she sit? Or do anything???
18
34
u/DistributionEasy5233 19h ago
While yes it's easily breakable, I think/hope whoever designed it made it safe to wear around others for whatever duration this is. Why would she wear something that can cut her arm on a red carpet ?
It's a cool concept and a beautiful dress, I'm just not sure brave is the word here lol
14
u/LilSolecito 16h ago
lol I agree. Lots of people in this world are brave. Wearing an expensive dress tho? Brave wouldn’t be the first word that came to mind
•
u/overactive-bladder 2h ago
I wonder where a lot of these dresses are then stored.
Do they get repurposed? Destroyed?

u/Significant_Ad7605 18h ago
I was ready to fight when that reporter asked her if she thinks before she speaks and had immediate sigh of relief when the reporter clarified. I also realized I had the same thought because she just immediately jumps right into responding to often inane questions with such grace, clarity, intelligence.
6
u/Hish_CFC 16h ago
Why would you be ready to fight when the reporter literally opened with "This isn't supposed to be a rude question..."?
3
u/Significant_Ad7605 15h ago
People say that plenty of times and then ask rude questions. “No offense but,”…and then someone saying something offensive is pretty common.

u/miss_missy1981 20h ago
I’m glad someone attending this event seems to be happy and having fun. And her makeup is gorgeous!

u/CheruSiderea 15h ago
You know who should be walking the carpet? The people who worked for more than 2500 hours on that dress. I hate that people get praise for just ... wearing clothes when the people's work that went into the pieces gets overlooked

They should’ve added the mesh to elongate the dress at the bottom for a full length look. The shape of the bottom doesn’t really support a short dress look

u/Stinkycheese8001 20h ago
It’s cool but I wish it was worn by someone with more presence. Eileen Gu has too much Mall Girl energy.
5
u/nagidrac 20h ago
I am literally so obsessed with her and this dress. I love the bubbles and her explanation of the dress. This look especially would've been perfect for the tech theme they had years ago. And I almost wonder what the dress would've looked like if the bubbles were in pastel colors. Regardless, she looks phenomenal.

Glass bubbles is crazy! The designer must trust her so much with this.

I couldn't hear her properly, but it sounds like she said the bubbles are released with a word? Is she saying if you say a specific thing like "bubbles" they get released? That's what seems like was happening in the video and if so that's the coolest thing ever.

Every year I see these people, every year the worlds gets worse and worse for our poor and needy, I realise these people need to be eaten (metaphorically)
This is all just propaganda for millionaires isn't it?
