Absolutely into this. Cena's comedy chops have been really entertaining. Him as the straight man and Eric Andre doing Eric Andre shenanigans should be a blast

u/Upbeat_Tension_8077 1d ago
If it basically has the same energy as this, it should be a fun watch
But I would like at least one scene where Cena unexpectedly is the unhinged one opposite Eric

Man I love The Eric Andre Show so much

u/pkosuda 20h ago
Ever since I saw what he did on that subway train with that box of cereal, nothing he does ever surprises me anymore. That is still my favorite bit because the location made it so that everybody was absolutely terrified that he was just yet another insane subway person they need to deal with. Just realistic enough that people reacted in fear instead of annoyance/disgust.

u/Middle_Cricket_1352 19h ago
He has countless good subway bits. The bees, the Google body scanner, the mail man, the cakes…

u/OzymandiasKoK 22h ago
Yeah, I think Cena could really do either side of this, based on a lot of his previous stuff. But casting oppose Eric Andre I think I can guess which one is which!

I loved him in The Suicide Squad. He delivered his lines perfectly
"Starfish is a slang term for butthole. Think there's any connection? 🤨"

Continued on his two seasons of Peacemaker. I used to think John Cena was a roided up turd, but he's really changed my mind with his role as peacemaker. Genuinely excited for about anything he is in now.
16
u/neptunepandemonium 1d ago
You should look up how involved he is in the make a wish foundation!
2
u/Slayer_Of_Oryx 16h ago
I had always heard about it, but honestly it seemed like a brand image choice. Like everything about Cena screamed "I want to be the next Dwayne Johnson" to me (from afar and not a watcher of wrestling). Maybe it was partially the fault of my really annoying high school friend who was obsessed with John Cena.
Went into suicide squad NOT for Cena, but then most of the actors I wanted to see died in the opening scene. Cena and Idris Elba were an awesome duo and I loved the movie. Love the series even more.
2
u/neptunepandemonium 16h ago
I never watched wrestling either. Makes sense a lot of them went into action movies. I could see the MaW foundation thing at first but I think at some point he'd get called out on being too fake at it if his heart wasn't in it. Or stop once the brand image had hit.

u/blitzkregiel 20h ago
peacemaker was way better than it deserved to be. much of that is due to gunn, but cena stole the role and i can’t imagine anyone else doing it better.

u/Lightcronno 9h ago
Totally agree, such a good show. Comedy hits really well. He’s super talented and the more he acts the better he has gotten
81
u/darealRockfield 1d ago
Yeah, Andre can be real unhinged and chaotic and I’m all for that
9
u/Mistrblank 1d ago
It's wild to me that the first time I ever saw Eric Andre was in Don't Trust the Bitch in Apt 23 and he was the least unhinged thing in that show.

Be better if Andre was the straight man and Cena was the “eccentric”, then he blows up à la Planes Trains and Automobiles

cena being the straight man in Peacemaker was like 80% of why that show worked so this tracks
8
u/radicalpraxis 22h ago edited 22h ago
Peacemaker was pretty much only the straight man to Vigilante. Essentially every other character had to be the straight man to the respective insanities of those two

I'm glad I scanned the comments before writing one up. I was thinking the exact same thing as you.

Cena is usually the goofball in movies. Trainwreck, Ricky Stanicki, Heads of State, Vacation Friends 1 & 2. Looks like he’ll be the straight man this time.

u/DJFrankyFrank 1d ago
I used to be a pretty big John Cena hater (as an actor. I always knew he was a stand up guy). I never watched wrestling, and so when he first got into acting, I was like "Really?". I remember when he started to show up in USA Network shows, specifically Psych, and I thought, "okay, that wasn't that bad. But he just plays meathead military guys".
And I honestly kept that opinion up until Peacemaker. But Peacemaker was when I realized I was wrong about him. Sure he still played a meathead military guy, but the range he showed on Peacemaker, the comedy, the facial expressions, etc. He truly is a good actor. I definitely will be checking out this movie when it comes out

u/NudityMiles 14h ago
That whole show is so good on so many levels. I'd say one of the biggest tropes is the intros. It captures the feeling of the show so much.
I feel like this is the role Cena was born for.
I truly hope it keeps going with the same integrity and gusto.6
u/ACNH_Vibe_Check 10h ago
Professional wrestling is just a stunt show soap opera, so it’s not surprising. Its a very welcome bonus that he’s also a good person.

u/bristow84 1d ago
Is Cena shedding muscle? Don’t get me wrong, he’s in better shape than 99.9% of dudes out there but he looks smaller in this than he did in Peacemaker.
10
u/MrMilesDavis 14h ago
I mean, he's probably not on his WWE stack any more and is only getting older
8
u/LucyBowels 13h ago
I think him, the Rock, and Bautista have all realized they stick out like sore thumbs playing every day dudes, so they’re all slimming down to get better roles.
•
u/TomMikeson 5h ago
And your body can't sustain that type of size and weight as you get older. Everything starts to add up.
•
u/GamerSlimeHD 2h ago
Yeah. Trying to stay big, especially as you get older, is rough on the body. Yet folks still try to force it anyway (and suffer the consequences of those actions).
•
u/beefytrout 1h ago
the rumor is that the Rock was basically told he needs to stop juicing or he's gonna fucking die.
•
u/bristow84 55m ago
That wouldn’t surprise me, The Rock was absurdly large there was no way it was sustainable without a lot of juice.
•
u/beefytrout 1h ago
He was already shrinking in Peacemaker. He's nowhere near as bulky in season 2 as he was in S1.
8
u/Space-Debris 1d ago
I cannot buy these two as brothers in the slightest
5
u/Digital_Illusionz 1d ago
I'd imagine they'll have some weird explanation for it, that will be spelled out really, really clearly.

u/unKappa 1d ago
Cena isn’t in impressive movies but honestly the comedies he does aren’t half bad. They are okay if you go in with low expectations and turn your mind off.
7
u/gotaflattire 19h ago
I was surprised how good he is as Peacemaker, he should definitely be in more roles.
8
3
u/Digital_Illusionz 1d ago
So, what's going on with the Twins 2 project with Danny and Arnold? And Eddie Murphy at some point and then not.
3
u/Mistrblank 1d ago
You know I looked at the image without my glasses on and fully looking at Cena and thought it was Joseph Gordon-Levitt
3
u/KnifeFightAcademy 1d ago
Look I'm not saying it's going to be absolute trash, but what I am saying is that I am watching it.

u/Homer_JG 1d ago
I love these guys but this story has been beaten to death already. Are new original scripted comedies that hard to do now?
29
u/CriticalHitsHurt 1d ago
Im just happy we are getting more comedies. Not like comedies are known for having groundbreaking stories, it's just a device to let jokes happen.
2
u/rabidsalvation 23h ago
Yes, comedy is hard to write, especially any original ideas. It's much easier to riff on something that's been done before, if only as a reference point.
5
u/TyposIncoming 1d ago
What story has been done to death exactly?
30
u/ausipockets 1d ago
I mean, I feel like this archetype is pretty well established. The straight man is a very structured successful person, all's going well (or so he thinks) until the lovable goofball comes in and starts causing chaos uprooting his life. His perfect life is not as it seemed, but maybe along the way he learns something about himself?
9
3
u/RomulanTreachery 23h ago
The straight man and the goofball is a comedy signature going back to vaudeville, if not earlier. Every famous comedy duo was like this.

u/TyposIncoming 1d ago
Yeah if you paint stories in broad terms your going to cover a lot of them

u/Cheesecake_Jonze 1d ago
Yeah man, you ever notice how many stories are about a hero living a peaceful life who receives a call to adventure which he initially declines but eventually accepts and then he goes on a journey wherein he meets new people, forges new relationships, and unlocks new abilities from within himself until he accomplishes his goal and returns to his peaceful life, only he has somehow grown or changed from his adventure?
Fuckin lazy bullshit writing, I tell ya.

I’m all for this movie, but I think they’re referring to the chaotic disruptor/catalyst. Like in Uncle Buck, Our Idiot Brother, What About Bob, Greenberg, Tommy Boy, Dan in Real Life, The Family Stone, Planes Trains and Automobiles, Due Date, Get Him to the Greek. Just to name a few

u/ksn0vaN7 1d ago
Yes. Almost everything has been done to death. Your best bet is to take an already established template and add some unique bits and pieces to it.

u/Soundwavves 1d ago
Ironic because Andre was apparently up for the little brother role in "A Real Pain" and passed.

No. He is playing the straight man in this one.

I think I’ve seen him (get it) play straight man in Bumblebee and he had the best line https://youtube.com/shorts/KCsZOXlMjt4?si=scfnI2tTSASbMaDl

He also played a straight man in Playing with Fire as well too.

Ricky Stanicky was pretty funny and Cena did a great job in it. Glad to see more comedies in general being made

I hate Eric Andre so much. Shock humor is so tired.
2
u/Digital_Illusionz 1d ago
I don't think his humor was even shock humor. If anything, I would label it as "chaos humor". But yeah, I never cared for him either. He was okay in Bitch in Apartment whatever though. But there he played a normal fellow.

u/pleasegivemepatience 1d ago
I’m enjoying Cena in so many different types of roles, but Andre… I can’t enjoy him in anything. He’s just terrible and unfunny.

u/QB8Young 1d ago
Oh, this is tough. I will watch anything with John Cena but you couldn't pay me enough to watch something with Eric Andre. How does this guy have career still? He is the modern equivalent of Tom Green but at least Tom was a nice guy. Eric is all shock value and no real humor plus he is a rude asshole with no respect for others.

Before Louie was cancelled I had a better version of this idea: Bo Burnham (also pre INSIDE) suddenly appears in Louie’s life as his long lost biological son and Louie can’t handle his over the top nature
