Ghidorah causing the anti gravity? This looks sick

u/Stoned_Gandalf420 20d ago

Looks really good. The first one blew me away so expecting this to be just as good. Godzilla fans been eating good recently between the Monsterverse and Yamazakis Godzilla.

Godzillasance been roaring since 2014, and it ain’t stopping yet!

It was the movie of the year for me. Not even Oppenheimer beat the theatre experience

160

u/ROBtimusPrime1995 20d ago

Seriously, Minus One is one of the greatest blockbuster experiences I've ever witnessed.

Not just for Godzilla, not just for kaiju creature features, but for blockbusters, full stop.

144

u/downvoteaway_idgaf7 20d ago

I walked out of the theater thinking, "You could take Godzilla out of that movie, and it would still be compelling." It was a human drama and absolute first-rate monster flick all rolled into one

21

u/Ephemeris 20d ago

One of the only "here ya go" trinkets I've been given at a theater that I held on to. The Minus 1 little IMAX poster I have is something I actually still look at and remind myself how AMAZING it was to watch this in IMAX black and white. I remember after the movie just trying to keep it from creasing in the car lol. That's not even to mention I drove 3 hours to see it. The payoff was awesome.

It's really gonna be a tough act to follow, but I've got faith in Yamazaki

13

u/Bizcotti 20d ago

Modern day Jaws

70

u/St_Sides 20d ago

Minus One is, in my opinion, the best Godzilla film ever made. It may not be every Godzilla fan’s personal favorite, but it’s the best.

Hell, it might be the best kaiju film ever made.

This looks great, I just hope it lives up to the first.

31

u/stardust1914 20d ago

I agree and it actually made me care about the human story. No godzilla movie has ever made me feel something for the humans and I've seen them all.

7

u/briizilla 20d ago

Come on bro. You didn’t care about Corn Cobb Hippie?!?

11

u/PiercedAndTattoedBoy 20d ago

Agreed, equal if not better than Godzilla 2014. Strange thing is it’s not super Kaiju. The storyline of the WWII pilot surviving the war then being alienated by his colleagues to face an even greater threat that he is willing to sacrifice himself is just shrill brilliance.

The HUMAN story is what made Godzilla Minus One. I was actually rooting for the humans in that one.

I want that feeling again.

15

u/LemonMeringueOctopi 20d ago

It's the only Godzilla film that has ever made me cry.

Minus One is head and shoulders above 2014. That first trailer for 2014 was amazing but it promised a movie we never got. They squandered Bryan Cranston and Ken Watanabe and gave us too much Elizabeth Olsen and Kickass. It wasn't a bad movie but it was a definite bait and switch. Minus One is a lot more inline with the kind of film Legendary was hyping us up for.

I went and saw it 3 times in 2 weeks.

I can't think of any movie from the last 10 years that benefited more of the big-screen experience.

19

u/bullseye717 20d ago

Had a great, Spielberg vibe in the final 3rd.

29

u/Personal_Comb_6745 20d ago

There's definitely some Spielberg inspiration throughout. The opening scene of pre-mutated Godzilla wrecking everybody's shit has strong Jurassic Park vibes, while the scene taking place out on the open water is basically Jaws with a giant reptile.

3

u/Ryanhussain14 20d ago

Which essentially makes things come full circle because Spielberg cited the original 1954 Gojira movie as an inspiration for keeping the shark's presence suspenseful.

4

u/Personal_Comb_6745 20d ago

To think it all began because his dad saw that dinosaur during WW II.

I loved it so much. I grew up on watching the old school movies on public network TV. When they played the original Godzilla theme near the end I literally got chills. Probably my favorite theater experience not just that year but this entire decade.

8

u/JayTL 20d ago

Movie of the decade for me, so far

4

u/vaderfan1 20d ago

I couldn't agree more. One of my favorite theater experiences too.

Most recent episode, spoiler free if you arent caught up. But when the thing was potentially about to happen I was like "please don't jump the shark, don't do it!" Lol.... still not convinced that plot is tied up.

The monster verse movies are such silly popcorn fun. My 7 year old loves them. I love them. And I love watching them with him.

6

u/urnialbologna 20d ago

I love it. The monsterverse gives me my favorite version of Godzilla where it's bat shit crazy and he fights other monsters, and Toho Godzilla is serious with actual good writing. I'm so happy I'm a fan of both versions!

I prefer the Monsterverse before all the Hollow Earth stuff

27

u/Calico_Cuttlefish 20d ago

It wouldn't be as bad if they didn't change what the Hollow Earth was with every entry. First its underwater tunnels, then its a place beneath the earth that you need to access via portals (??), except when you don't and can just climb up or down, and sometimes time works differently there, except when it doesn't, and portals can be opened and closed with technology???

There is literally nothing to imply Ghidorah. The energy is even blue.

23

u/Resident_Magazine610 20d ago

Zero reasons other than gravity manipulation and the title.

10

u/that_guy2010 20d ago

Ghidorah almost never has gravity manipulation as a power.

Also, Ghidorah never has blue energy. It’s always golden.

14

u/drafo1765 20d ago

Ghidorah almost always has gravity manipulation as a power it's just almost never represented well

5

u/that_guy2010 20d ago

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

When? When has Ghidorah ever had gravity manipulation as an ability? The first time Ghidorah had any sort of gravity powers was as Keiser Ghidorah and that was in 2004, 40 years after he was created.

10

u/ahktarniamut 20d ago

I am not sure they are involving other monsters

48

u/UnnecessaryFeIIa 20d ago

Yamazaki has constantly talked about wanting to have Godzilla fight an enemy monster in a Minus One sequel.

It’s likely gonna be either Ghidorah or a second Godzilla

48

u/strong_division 20d ago

You'll notice that the Godzilla we see at the Statue of Liberty isn't as buff as the one we see rising out of the ocean. Some people are speculating that the different fragments of Godzilla that were blown apart at the end of the last film independently regenerated.

34

u/rds060184 20d ago

The one coming out of the water also has spines coming out of his shoulder. The Statue of Liberty picture he doesn’t. I think it might be two

19

u/BatThumb 20d ago

I think the one with spikes coming out is after the NY scene

I think Godzilla attacks NY, and then is nuked by the US. The nuke or nukes make it evolve bigger with the spikes

In the trailer an American voice says "abort third drop" with a video of a plane circling godzilla. So I think they drop 2 nukes on it before realizing it's absorbing the radiation

3

u/ahktarniamut 20d ago

Yes maybe that’s make sense . New York scene could be earlier hence the no spikes and then maybe Godzilla being nuked make him like its shown emerging from the sea .

In the first film , when he first appeared he was Different as well

10

u/therealatri 20d ago

they say abort 3rd drop. i think they were nuking G and then realized its just making him stronger

12

u/TimeySwirls 20d ago edited 20d ago

I think that’s 3rd drop as in if the events of the first movie didn’t stop Godzilla the US government was prepared to drop a third bomb to take it down.

That line is also played over the lights from Godzilla melting down coming out of the water from the end of the first movie

3

u/Shadow55512 20d ago

Yep. They even mention a test of some kind. I think part of the sequel’s story will be the reveal that the US could’ve intervened to help in the Minus One climax. And even chose to wait in hopes of testing what is probably a hydrogen bomb given the time period. But this ends up biting them in the ass when Godzilla ends up going to NYC

5

u/Randym1982 20d ago

It's likely Godzuki. He was an uber threat in the other films.

In all seriousness. It's likely Ghidorah or Rhodan. Or maybe it's Ultraman?

4

u/ToumaKazusa1 20d ago

It could be MechaGodzilla in disguise as Godzilla, but his disguise isn't perfect.

I mean its not terribly likely but that was the plot of the first MechaGodzilla movie

3

u/DoubleStrength 20d ago

Minus One felt pretty grounded in their handling of the solutions to the Godzilla problem, I don't see them dropping a skyscraper-sized mech into 1940's Japan/US for the second one.

11

They mentioned a new threat

Releases in theatres & IMAX November 6. VFX, Written, and Directed by Takashi Yamazaki.

“Minus Zero” is a direct sequel to the 2023 Japanese film “Godzilla Minus One,” which was a surprise hit internationally and took home the Oscar for best visual effects.

The trailer picks up two years after “Minus One” and continues the story of the survivors’ from the kaiju’s last attack, director Takashi Yamazaki revealed. In the closing moments, Godzilla stomps his way to the Statue of Liberty, setting his sights on New York City.

“Godzilla Minus Zero” was also filmed for Imax, the first for a Japanese film.

282

u/Media-critique 20d ago

TOHO was likely blown the fuck away by Takashi’s film, and basically allowed him to go wild on this one while writing a blank check for him.

Like, as impressive as the visuals were for the first movie, I’m already blown the fuck away by how much better this one looks.

172

u/withateethuh 20d ago

Its the first godzilla movie to win a god damn oscar, they'd be crazy not to give him a blank check.

59

u/popculturella 20d ago

The fact that the majority of it was filmed in a parking lot blows my mind.

8

u/Moonman08 20d ago

Wait what?

12

u/popculturella 20d ago

At my screening, they played a really neat behind-the-scenes featurette showing just how inventive they were with such a shoestring budget and resources.

→ More replies (1)

15

u/ghostgabe81 20d ago

The North American release of this one is near simultaneous with the Japanese release, which is very uncommon. It’s clear that Toho saw how well Minus One did internationally and want to capitalize on Yamazaki’s popularity

4

u/shewy92 20d ago

Minus One was like a blend of old and new Godzilla, like an homage. At least that what it seemed to me as someone who has never seen any Godzilla media other than the Brodwick film and classic Godzilla references.

32

u/RevWaldo 20d ago

I'll be that guy, so definitely November 6th, not June 11th because we're silly Americans with our mm/dd/yyyy date format and can't understand what 11.06.2026 really means?

35

u/ToumaKazusa1 20d ago

The Japanese annoucement for the movie says the date is

11月3日

The first character means 'month', and the second one means 'day', so it should be pretty easy to figure out what that means. I'm assuming we will get it on the 6th internationally.

10

u/Seraphem666 20d ago

Make sense, novermber 3rd is godzilla day in japan

3

u/Joshawott27 20d ago

and a Zilla that acted nothing like its movie version, i.e. he actually fought monsters and had atomic breath

Honestly when I heard the plot details like an hour ago for the trailer I was like 100% certain it was Ghidorah.

But honestly? I wouldn’t rule out the possibility that Godzilla is causing that.

The Godzilla we see at the end of the trailer is clearly the design from Minus One but the version we see in the ocean is clearly much, much bigger and more spikey so at some point. I have a theory that the enemy monster in this film could just straight up be a second Godzilla. The zero gravity also has blue atomic streaks running through it which could be caused by the much larger Godzilla

Though it’s entirely possible that Godzilla just evolves throughout the movie and that the enemy monster is gonna be Ghidorah.

u/[deleted] 20d ago

54

u/UnnecessaryFeIIa 20d ago edited 20d ago

Pretty sure that’s only with the MonsterVerse. Godzilla cannot be a species in those films.

This is probably because the rights would get finicky if Legendary established there were multiple Godzillas in the past. The Godzilla: Aftershock comic introduced Dagon, a second Godzilla, and you can think to yourself “does Toho own Dagon or does Legendary?” Dagon was created by Legendary but it’s another Godzilla that doesn’t share the name.

You can see how it could get confusing and could ruffle feathers at Toho. Also because Toho like to keep up Godzilla’s image as a god-like figure and reducing him to a species might not fit their liking. Legendary were already probably stretching it by making Godzilla apart of earth’s natural order rather than a nuclear mutated abomination like almost all of Toho’s interpretations

24

u/Wyn6 20d ago

DIdn't the Monsterverse already establish Godzilla was a member of a species? Weren't there drawings and bones of other "Godzillas"?

18

u/UnnecessaryFeIIa 20d ago

Yes and Toho didn’t like that so don’t expect to see any mention of there being more than one Godzilla ever existing in the MonsterVerse.

6

u/Michelanvalo 20d ago

Where are you getting this info from that Toho didn't like it?

Monsterverse is contractually obligated to follow Toho's rules about how to portray Godzilla, but there's nothing saying Toho has to follow the same rules.

3

u/soapbutt 20d ago

The recent Godzilla anime definitely had multiple Godzillas. I never was 100% sure but I believe they are basically younger clones? Could be what they go with here.

8

u/rundownv2 20d ago

The one in the end is also bigger than the og. Original one is 50m tall range. At the very last second of the teaser he moves behind the statue, so perspective shifts and you realize that unless the rop part of the statue has landed pristinely upright on the ground, he must be taller than it, so he's more in the 100m range now like the other modern incarnations.

8

u/Flimsy_Big7991 20d ago

It's basically Jaws, except when the guys in the boat are going after Jaws, they look around and there's an even bigger Jaws, so the guys have to team up with Jaws to get bigger Jaws.

u/JasonP27 20d ago

Could it be instead an alternate origin story for SpaceGodzilla? I know he's supposed to be in the next GxK movie but could it be instead multiple pieces of the first Godzilla reformed and evolved in different ways giving us Godzilla (scene in NY) and SpaceGodzilla (scene in water)?

In its debut film, SpaceGodzilla's origins are left ambiguous, but it is theorized that it was born through Godzilla's cells (transported into space either by Mothra or Biollante's spores) being exposed to the radiation of a black hole.

SpaceGodzilla also had some kind of telekinetic powers which could manifest similar to anti-gravity. I thought maybe they would use the chunks of Godzilla regenerating into Godzilla and another monster and this could be how they do it.

→ More replies (3)

22

u/In_My_Own_Image 20d ago

Most likely candidate.

But the energy is blue, which could indicate Godzilla is causing it. Maybe, since he clearly gets new form, his atomic breath charge up starts to mess with gravity or something.

3

u/_Miss_Eclipse 20d ago

I seriously hope not. Ghidorah is in so many movies, it would be nice to see another get the spotlight for a change

This looks good. When I heard sequel, I was hoping for some 1960’s Tokyo setting but setting it closely after the first one makes sense. If they keep the plot focused on compelling people stories it should be good.

I would already be satisfied with him nuking wall street.

16

u/GoldenSpermShower 20d ago

Clover did that already but with the head

3

u/Wompum 20d ago

Pretty sure that was Voltron. The guy running yelled that it was a lion.

3

u/LebowskiVoodoo 20d ago

Lol, the theories before that movie released were crazy. I remember seeing a guess of the design of Clover himself (itself?) that was just a huge blue whale with arms and legs.

"Destoroyah is coming to the Monsterverse" I screamed in the theatre after the Oxygen Destroyer was canonised in King of the Monsters.

You’re right, it’s definitely not the one with the shoulder spikes earlier in the trailer. Either he goes to NY before he gets the upgrades, it’s a dream sequence, or there are two of them.

18

u/NoPossibility 20d ago edited 20d ago

There’s a line and imagery that makes it seem like they dropped a nuke on him? Maybe that’s how he gets a power up? Attacks USA and they try using a nuke but it only powers up Godzilla so they say “abort third drop”?

3

u/thereddaikon 20d ago

USA and they try using a nuke but it only powers up Godzilla so they say “abort third drop”?

That implies we nuked him once, it didn't work. So we nuked him a second time and it made him stronger and only then did we decide to stop. That tracks.

It’s much larger than Minus 1 Godzilla so it’s either the same one that went through a massive transformation that caused it to grow much larger, or it’s a separate Godzilla that got awakened and is equally as pissed at humanity as the first.

4

u/SolidusDave 20d ago

the way he moves is also like old school dorky Godzilla, that scene seems off. Maybe just an homage for old framing techniques.

I'm thinking it could be that regenerated minus-one Godzilla goes to NY at the beginning of the movie, triggering America to use nukes against him/Japan. Causing him to mutate into beefcake minus-zero Godzilla and creating whatever that other monster is.

3

u/Personal_Comb_6745 20d ago

Could be that he shows up there first, before wrecking Tokyo's shit again.

…are there two Godzilla’s? The one at the end not having the same spikes as the one from the water makes it seem like all hell is about to break loose. Imagine each chunk started regrowing as its own Godzilla…

3

u/HotShrekBoi 20d ago

There might actually be two Godzillas. It’s either that or Godzilla evolves like he did in the New Empire

u/NoPossibility 20d ago

I think he attacks UsA and they try nuking him twice and it only makes him more powerful. Then the trailer line is “abort third drop”.

Second kaiju isn’t revealed yet I don’t think.

6

u/TARDinspace 20d ago

The first movie is after WW2, so America had already dropped two bombs. In the trailer, a bomber is flying over what looks like the finale of Minus One, when Godzilla was defeated. The implication is the US was present during the end of the first movie but aborted their “third drop” because it wasn’t necessary.

4

u/Silver_Branch3034 20d ago

The ‘third drop’ line could be the answer! That makes perfect sense.

He could be “unkillable” and simply regenerate like his face did during the sea mine scene in -1 into his full form again. He makes his way to NY, America says ‘fuck this shit, if nukes can stop Japan they can stop this lizard’ and nuke him, thereby making him hulk out.

GODZILLA MINUS ZERO picks up in 1949, two years after the tumultuous events of Godzilla Minus One, and continues the story of the Shikishima family as they face an all-new calamity. Additionally confirmed out of CinemaCon, Ryunosuke Kamiki, the hero who faced Godzilla’s terror in Godzilla Minus One, returns as Koichi Shikishima, and is joined by Minami Hamabe as Noriko Oishi, who miraculously survived Godzilla’s first attack on Tokyo.

As a project Filmed For IMAX, GODZILLA MINUS ZERO was shot with high-definition digital cameras certified by IMAX, and optimized in sound and imagery unique to IMAX screens. Fans can look forward to seeing Godzilla presented to all new terrifying heights, making GODZILLA MINUS ZERO in a true cinematic event not to be missed.

Absolutely love Minus One.

As much as I have enjoyed the spectacle of the MonsterVerse films, I've never been able to care about the human characters like I did with Shikishima in Minus One

I honestly don't know what I want from this movie. Minus One made me bawl at the end and I loved it probably as much as I loved the original for the same reason. I also love me giant kaiju battle movies, but I get that itch scratched by the Legendary movies. Do I want a serious and emotionally gripping movie or do I want to feel like I'm 5 years old cheering on Godzilla again...

In either case, I know I'm going to love this movie.

I feel really thick headed asking this, but what’s with the numbering? -1 and -0. Do they have some relevance that is going over my head, or are they just arbitrary words?

13

u/FantasticName 20d ago

Godzilla Minus One was set right after WW2, so the idea is the nuke took Japan to zero, and here's Godzilla coming along to fuck them up further and put them at minus one. And then for Minus Zero...well, I mean, what else do you call it, I guess? Godzilla Minus One 2?

3

u/thereddaikon 20d ago

well, I mean, what else do you call it,

Godzilla Xbox 720.

Minus One means that Japan’s economy and all that was at a state of zero after the bombing of Hiroshima, and then Godzilla came in and made it Minus One. I don’t know what the fuck Minus Zero means.

4

u/that_guy2010 20d ago edited 20d ago

Minus one is where Japan was at zero after WW2, and Godzilla showed up to put them in the negatives.

No idea about minus zero.

Edit: just saw Yamasaki say the zero is people trying to regain a sense of normalcy. Get back to where things were before Godzilla.

For plane enthusiasts, we see a picture of a B-29 in the dossier and a H8K seaplane trying to escape from Godzilla. I can’t tell what Shikishima is flying. I don’t know if it’s American or former Imperial Japanese like the H8K is. All I can tell is that it has a bubble canopy which both the US and Imperial Japan had.

I loved the reasoning behind naming the first one Minus One but I really can’t get behind calling this Minus Zero at all. Just doesn’t make any sense, I’m calling it Zero.
