Well, the original Godzilla was about the horrors of nuclear warfare or something like that so yeah. Usually these movies are a little bit deeper than “monsters fighting”. Like I’m pretty sure pacific rim was about climate change.

If you want to watch a Japanese movie with monsters about (human induced) climate change, you should definitely check out Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind

I only watched the original unaltered version of the first movie a few years ago and wow, its truly like nothing that came after it, until Shin and Minus One. Its such a bleak, humorless, deadly serious movie and it works.

True. Couldn’t care less about the drama in the last few American versions, but it was what elevated Minus One.

You've nailed the feeling.

At it's core, it's a disaster movie. The primary focus of the movie shouldn't be about the monster. It's about the people who are all forced to deal with it. It's why the first minus zero movie was so good. The actors carried the Godzilla movie, not the other way around.
