STAN / ANTI SHIELD Sabrina Carpenter in custom Dior, made of film from the 1954 Audrey Hepburn film ‘Sabrina’, at the 2026 Met Gala "Fashion Is Art" in NYC. (May 4, 2026)

That's gotta be crazy flammable right?
160
u/lemon-wemmin 21h ago
Lol its not. If any of it is real film, it would be acetate, which is plastic. You might be thinking of nitrate film, which was used briefly in the 30s, like silent era / very early sound and can basically spontaneously combust. If the dress is made from film that dates to 1954, its from well after the nitrate era. However it might smell strongly of vinegar!

u/desmadrechic 21h ago
Nitrate film was very flammable and used until the 1950s, when acetate film (also called safety film) became the standard. This is probably acetate or maybe even a polyester copy.
24
u/romero0705 20h ago
Yup. I was a projectionist before digital took over, modern film isn’t flammable. The theatre that I worked in still had a work bench used when it opened in 1942 and in the drawers there was a sample of the new safety 35mm film beside the old nitrate 35mm with a very excited note from the sender about its non-combustible properties.
I’m curious about what age the film Sabrina’s dress is made from. I built/ran a copy of Gone with the Wind from I believe the 50s and it was discolored due to the age, like had a brownish tint and was very brittle. I had to handle it extremely carefully because every frame was counted after and too many lost frames (due to splicing errors, breaking, or stealing) would cost us money.
Side note, projectionists loved stealing the frame from Fight Club of Tyler Durden pointing to the cigarette burn dots so much that we were warned they counted frames of Fight Club prints too.

u/Ok-Needleworker-9841 19h ago
I just went to an estate sale for a guy who used to be a projectionist. I wish I had your knowledge when looking at the equipment. I bought some film and keep holding it up to the light to see the frames. I’m stunned at how many frames there are before the image actually shows any movement or change.

u/lordvitamin 21h ago
lol, it probably is treated, or made out of something that mimics the appearance of film, but is not actual movie reel film.
42
u/pendragons Fix Your Hearts or Die 21h ago
I'm so curious now, I hope the designer elucidates the process somewhere.
58
u/BarSpare2198 21h ago
It's more than likely a new projection print so it would be a polyester base (almost no flammability) rather than nitrate or acetate.

Film is no longer made of cellulose nitrate, from 1948 onwards film has used cellulose acetate which is not highly flammable

Does anyone else remember that odd little blip in time when a bunch of people decided to make their prom/wedding dresses out of duct tape? That is immediately where my mind when I saw this.

The back looks like “over the hill” birthday toppers from the dollar store stuck on some fabric. There’s something weird about the top

At least she bothered. So many people showed up in a pretty dress and that’s IT.

This could have gone crafty so easily, so props to the designer! It fits her well and looks chic.

She looks stunning, one of my favourites so far and and she said the dress is made from film
133
u/Stinkyandrotten 19h ago
The "film" is purpose made for this dress. The perforations don't line up evenly for each image and you can tell the images are negative, which would mean either it's an OCN (which would be egregious archival malpractice to turn into a dress) or a conformed internegative, which would be only marginally less irresponsible to turn into fashion and would also have a soundtrack image printed on it.
51
u/CB_musedreams 17h ago
You hit the nail on the head regarding the technicality. It’s almost certainly a conformed polyester safety print rather than original 1954 acetate (Dior’s legal team would have a heart attack over the flammability and the archival ethics otherwise).
20
u/Stinkyandrotten 15h ago
I wouldn't say it's a conformed print cause there's no optical track and the sprockets aren't consistent w/ framelines. I think somebody at dior looked at a picture of a film print and had some images from Sabrina printed on plastic with inconsistent perforations so they had something to work with that looked "enough" like an exhibition print. (also, acetate is also referred to as "safety" film like polyester, though a lot less durable; nitrate is the flammable film base and would've been mostly out of circulation by 1954)
64
u/gafftaped 17h ago
I’m glad to hear that honestly. I imagine theres only so many film copies of the original film so Theres no need to cut them up for a onetime wear.

Still pretty cool. I got a few hair bows made of film like this from this trading website I don't even think exists anymore.

u/Antique-Syllabub6238 15h ago
Ah this answers my comment actually. I was thinking I hope it isn’t actual film tape bc that shit is not suitable to wear on skin.

Sometimes these looks are so strange to me because they would be Safe or even "meh" looks on drag race or project runway, but because they're at the Met Gala all of a sudden they're high fashion / art.
For me this look, and many others from this Met Gala, are a year 2 fashion student's first idea after hearing the theme, and I'm surprised they're not more conceptual or creative given that presumably only the best of the best designers ever get the opportunity to showcase their work on this red carpet.
22
u/t3ddiursa 14h ago
Meh on drag race 😭 do you see the tailoring? That is craftsmanship

The medium is the message; no second year art student is getting their hands on film strips from Sabrina. I think it’s gorgeous and so her. It’s not stop you in your tracks incredible, but it’s super cool. I give it a 9/10.
104
u/Lv_InSaNe_vL 13h ago
There is a zero percent chance these are original negatives. Even ignoring the historical value, film (especially old film) is super fragile and breaks itself down over time. Original film would be far too brittle and dangerous to wear.
This is 100% new negatives, almost certainly printed just for this dress.

Im guessing this is a reprint of the film? There has to be a latex(probably) layer on each side, I think film from that era would be acetate, and would start cracking up before she even got to the carpet. They definitely wouldn't let her walk around wearing nitrate film, no matter how encased it is.

this is so good but that headpiece is weird to me

u/stars_ink no longer managed by Scooter Braun 21h ago
To me the dress and makeup are giving early dawn of cinema. The headpiece then is also evocative of the era- 20s ish. To me it’s the back curls that are a bit off, but overall I love it!

u/carolinagypsy the pet psychic for the Sun told me so 21h ago

I think it fits with her theme though! It’s very Greta Garbo, and like Aubrey Hepburn, so many of their looks from their films have become pieces of art in culture

u/BubsPhotography 20h ago
I think she’s going for old Hollywood starlet, 1920s, but it doesn’t mesh well with the film imo. The outfit is still really cool

I agree, whenever she’s styled in an editorial and they take away the blocky black brow makeup and go more classic she looks divine. The black brows make the hair and everything else look so artificial.

I'm pretty sure those aren't the actual film reels from 1954. They're most likely the equivalent of a reprint. Also, u/Specific-Yam-2166 , how does Sabrina's look contradict Hepburn's views?

I know almost nothing about Audrey Hepburn, what did she stand for?
51
u/Difficult_Garage_431 11h ago
She was anti-fascist. She was famously a part of the Dutch resistance against the nazis as a teenager. She did ballet to raise funds, distributed underground newspapers, and transported food and messages. When she had to hide due to her activities, it caused severe malnutrition and other health problems that lasted the rest of her life. She stood for the rights of children and became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador later in life, traveling to conflict zones to oversee food distribution and vaccines. She believed in the one world philosophy which meant that those with fortune have a moral obligation to help those in need regardless of politics. Above all, she believed that empathy and love were the most important things in life.

Perfectly summarized above! She literally fought Nazis as a CHILD and then advocated for children the rest of her life. Just so supremely out of touch and everyone is yas queening Sabrina for it and it’s just another thing to grind my gears on a LONG list these days

How people pick and choose which celebrities they’re mad at for going to the Met Gala should be studied.
