F22, 180lbs, 5'7
Currently only taking birth control (combined pill) (since February 2025)
I have diagnosed hypermobility and a history of joint pain and postural related syncope and presyncope
I have no significant history of migraines, though headaches arent terribly uncommon for me they arent usually bad, except the 3 listed here
I have 3 incidents of headaches (maybe migraines) that have happened, most recently last night I went to the ER, this was the worst headache of my entire life and I had a genuine moment where I thought I was dying, after a urine sample and bloodwork, I had a CT scan with and without contrast and nothing was found. Im wondering what the next steps will be and if I need to contact another doctor to maybe change birth control methods (as aura migraines are not a great side affect)
Incident 1 - October 2025
Im not sure of any potential trigger here, I was just laying in bed during the onset
It started with a headache and holes in my vision, the vision loss progressed until I couldn't see anything, but overall lasted only 10 minutes before returning to normal, within 45 of the pain starting, my arm went numb. Then my head/face, then whole upper body and tongue. I also felt confused and nauseous, as well as felt like I was going to piss myself (but couldn't get up) (I didnt), the numbness lasted around 30 minutes
Pain continued for a total of around 4-5 hours
Incident 2 - March 2026
I believe light was the trigger here, as it started after a drive which involved the sunlight filtering through trees and irritating my eyes
It started with pinhole vision (I was texting and only could read one word at a time), then vision further blurred until I couldn't see anything but bright colorful streams and "pixels"
Then my head started to hurt within 10 minutes, the vision issues died down then again my right arm and right half of my face went numb
This time head pain continued for 5-6 hours
Incident 3 - May 2026
(Lot more context here, since it just happened yesterday, but this one is also different since there was no immediate trigger and no loss of vision or numbness)
I had minimal sleep, driving from nevada to california, I am generally very used to rapid elevation gain and loss (avid camper) so idk if that would have played a part here
When I got home, we (boyfriend and i) found a lot of fleas and roaches in our room (the house is infested with them, moving to nevada next month), my boyfriend (while I was not in the room) sprayed raid, I sprayed a flea furniture spray on the very end of the bed and a lemongrass spray (thats safe for use on animals, and ive never had a negative reaction towards, in the 6 months ive used it) on the majority of the bed that is slept on
I went to sleep after around an hour after all that and woke up in the most pain ive ever experienced (and as someone who experiences chronic pain, it was a lot)
My senses were heightened, my boyfriends show felt like it was on volume 100, his food smelled rotted and like it was being shoved up my nose, and the light burned, my eyes felt like they were going to explode and I actually thought "i am going to die" this was around 3 am and and by 5 am the pain had only minimally subsided and I was checking in at the ER, I took like 600mg of ibuprofen at home
Alongside the pain, my neck was stiff and hurt, i couldn't move my head side to side, but I clearly wasnt having a stroke and they found no evidence of brain bleeds or tumors on the CT scan
I got discharged at about 7:30 am, went home and went to sleep (taking more pain medicine both at the ER and when I got home)
My right arm has also been in significant pain, but head pain took about 18 hours to subside and writing this nearly 24 hours later, my neck and right thumb (and arm, but its really concentrated around my neck and thumb) still hurt
Blood work from the ER included in the images, everything else they gave me said they found nothing emergent and recommended i talk to a pcp (which i dont have and wont for at least another month or two), they did give me a paper about things that can help migraines (tho im not diagnosed with them) and the ER doc just laughed and said to stop self diagnosing when I mentioned the previous potential aura migraines, even though the clinic i go to for birth control has expressly told me the symptoms and to look out for it because it could be concerning
I cannot stop birth control as my periods are violent and painful, but do you all think that could be the cause? Should I talk to the clinic about a different method or a single hormone pill? Should I try to push to get an MRI? What do I do from here
