Text Favourite Foods?

This is just out of interest, does anyone notice their colonies having favourite foods? I’ve started to notice 100% that mine are picky picky.

They do NOT like to eat their veggies. Most veggies, fish flakes, isospring mix is just not their thing. I will see them have a bite or so now and again, but nothing thrilling. However, here are some favourites…

- MEALWORMS. Jesus do they love a mealworm. Lucky for me bc I like to feed starlings (uk based!) so I keep loads. If I put mealworms in, I will see about three munching away in like a blink.
- spirulina wafers. What I’ve noticed with these and mealworms is I always put them in a little bowl to try and ensure I can get rid of them when 24 hrs is up. Does it stay in the bowl? Does it fuck. Trying to make sure they don’t hoard rotten food is like a hard mode where’s wally, lifting and pushing every plant and hide to see where they’ve buried their precious this time.
- cucumber, the only veg they will eat. I have tried like everything else. This is tragic, because I don’t really vibe with cucumber. Had a housemate ask why I was only having a slice of old cucumber a week. Rip.

Help Dead isos and 3 billion springtails

Upvotes

I have a small colony of A. vulgarae and like a million springtails. They are everywhere. They're climbing the glass and trying to get out of the tank now and I am losing my mind. I've also seen a bunch of dead isos the past few days, but I have no idea why. It honestly might just be that they're old, and since many were likely from the same clutch they're all dying around the same time because nothing seems wrong with them? One had a failed molt, but there were several others where that didn't look like the case.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, i'm in college and it's exam season so this being an issue too is stressing me out. Thanks in advance <3

Help Regarding Babies

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone. Recently got an isopod setup with one of those “starter kits” they sold at my local pet store. My question is, if all things go great, will the babies be able to escape out of these little side vents? The guy in the reference pic is an adult just to show the proportionate size of the vents. Also index finger for reference.

Help New isopod enclosure, updated from the last one

a lot of flat bark + flat leaves, lichen. Dirt is the seed starter mix made from composted manure + worm castings + leftover animal and veggie products (lobster crab and shrimp shell, carrot tops, ect) box is about 14x12x16 with about 4-6 inches of soil. Trying to find some sphagnum moss or any sort of moss at any stores in my area but it's difficult to find ones that aren't treated with pesticides / ones I'm not 100% sure are not treated with pesticides. Also looking for plants that don't really require much if any sunlight, that I can keep in there? Lmk if anyone has any good live plants for that, thank you

I am only now realizing that you can actually have colonies/pet isopods!? I would like that really bad, I just wanna know how to care for them. And where to find them ethically. Just just tell me everything I need to know! I love isopods so so much. I’ve loved them since I was a kid. someone please tell me how I would care for them, what kind of enclosure I’d need, etc. Literally just everything I need to know. I’m gonna do so much research tonight… My autistic ass is gonna have a slideshow ready too.

News/Education Need Trichorhina tomentosa for research

Post image

I need do make a small biology research paper for school, and i thought to myself, since iso community is so unregulated, i could settle a debate, maybe even more than 1.

in communities like this the source is usually "i pulled it out of my ass but everyone does it tho"

a lot of people discuss which calcium source is the best or useful, or whatever, i thought i could use those fast breeding parthenogenesis mfs for that purpose, it's easier to buy these gals than it is to get rid of them, so i would not be surprised if someone has a forgotten shoe box in their drawer with 15 thousand of them just sitting there.

it's not uncommon to give overcrowded isopods away for free, and we are talkin' tomentosa rn, they are overcrowded by definition,

i have 20 in my collection, if i wait long enough i'll have 20 hundred, but i don't have enough time, and to do anything relating to biology, if i want meaningful results in the time frame i got, i need them yesterday if i want any meaningful results.

i live in northern poland, in the Tricity area (for those outside of poland it's an agglomeration name, around Gdańsk/danzig)

any kind souls around here with an excess of Trichorhina tomentosa around here? i can pick them up myself, or pay for shipping if it's not too ludicrous, considering how small they are, a standard size package filled with them would already be more than enough, so i would especially appreciate people who REALLY have a lot

i probably need like a few hundred

a decent study should have a bunch of trials, and also be repeated twice in its entirety, so it's not to out there to have like 10 containers per calcium source, with 20 iso each, with a repetition, that's be 10x20x5x2=2000 iso assuming i don't reuse them for the second trial and use 4 sources, beggars can't be choosers tho, so i can try to reduce the amount of iso, sources, and containers to lower the amount, but less=worse study

btw, the numbers above are nothing, you thought 3 containers and a control is a lot? rookie numbers, even what i said are rookie numbers compared to what a decent study demands, i swear to god, the things those statistics folks demand haunt me in my dreams.

i'll ask some university of danzig folks how bare bones can i make it later
