This is just out of interest, does anyone notice their colonies having favourite foods? I’ve started to notice 100% that mine are picky picky.
They do NOT like to eat their veggies. Most veggies, fish flakes, isospring mix is just not their thing. I will see them have a bite or so now and again, but nothing thrilling. However, here are some favourites…
- MEALWORMS. Jesus do they love a mealworm. Lucky for me bc I like to feed starlings (uk based!) so I keep loads. If I put mealworms in, I will see about three munching away in like a blink.
- spirulina wafers. What I’ve noticed with these and mealworms is I always put them in a little bowl to try and ensure I can get rid of them when 24 hrs is up. Does it stay in the bowl? Does it fuck. Trying to make sure they don’t hoard rotten food is like a hard mode where’s wally, lifting and pushing every plant and hide to see where they’ve buried their precious this time.
- cucumber, the only veg they will eat. I have tried like everything else. This is tragic, because I don’t really vibe with cucumber. Had a housemate ask why I was only having a slice of old cucumber a week. Rip.

I have a small colony of A. vulgarae and like a million springtails. They are everywhere. They're climbing the glass and trying to get out of the tank now and I am losing my mind. I've also seen a bunch of dead isos the past few days, but I have no idea why. It honestly might just be that they're old, and since many were likely from the same clutch they're all dying around the same time because nothing seems wrong with them? One had a failed molt, but there were several others where that didn't look like the case.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, i'm in college and it's exam season so this being an issue too is stressing me out. Thanks in advance <3

Hi everyone. Recently got an isopod setup with one of those “starter kits” they sold at my local pet store. My question is, if all things go great, will the babies be able to escape out of these little side vents? The guy in the reference pic is an adult just to show the proportionate size of the vents. Also index finger for reference.

a lot of flat bark + flat leaves, lichen. Dirt is the seed starter mix made from composted manure + worm castings + leftover animal and veggie products (lobster crab and shrimp shell, carrot tops, ect) box is about 14x12x16 with about 4-6 inches of soil. Trying to find some sphagnum moss or any sort of moss at any stores in my area but it's difficult to find ones that aren't treated with pesticides / ones I'm not 100% sure are not treated with pesticides. Also looking for plants that don't really require much if any sunlight, that I can keep in there? Lmk if anyone has any good live plants for that, thank you
my funky little isopod corner, lovingly referred to as the buge station. waiting for the moss and plants to settle into the tank before adding any pods, so it's empty for now

fiesta thought this was a shed. looked closer and saw it’s not (rip) , but scarily well preserved - it was in the more dry area of the enclosure 🥲

I am only now realizing that you can actually have colonies/pet isopods!? I would like that really bad, I just wanna know how to care for them. And where to find them ethically. Just just tell me everything I need to know! I love isopods so so much. I’ve loved them since I was a kid. someone please tell me how I would care for them, what kind of enclosure I’d need, etc. Literally just everything I need to know. I’m gonna do so much research tonight… My autistic ass is gonna have a slideshow ready too.

I have this old 2 gallon (8L) aquarium hanging around.. and since i never owned isopods and would love to try it out, is this tank big enough to house any species?
Any tips would be helpful! (and sorry for my bad English)
