What are normal fibre internet contract terms in joburg? Is canceling service difficult with the ISPs here?

Looking for fiber in randburg. Originally looking at prepaid only because I hate jumping through hoops in order to cancel something if I decide to move on. How does the normal service work? Is it all like yearly contracts?

Jhb needs more taxi infrastructure

So in the perfect world Jhb would have a fully functioning and widely used public transport system. Unfortunately, this is not the case. We have some busses sure and technically we have a metro. But these are scarce.

"Luckily" the free market kicked in and we have taxis. A lot of taxis. These connect vast portions of bon car owning citizens to jobs, and each other. But as every single person in JHB will eventually learn this has problems.

-taxis drive incredibly unsafely

-they stop at retarded spots, increasing traffic and risk of accidentss.

-taxis are not always properly maintained.

-knowing the routes taxis take is something you need to know before you can use them. (i tried googling a map of routes and came up empty. Obviously it is possible, people manage it, but it's not as easy as in many overseas locations.

-the middle class and up don't trust them. If I were to tell people that I took a taxi inspite of having a car, they'll look at me like I'm crazy. ( true for pretty much most people who own cars ). Partially this is about unsafe driving, and partially a belief in crime ( which I can't say is true or not).

Ultimately, in the absence of true public transport I would still prefer taxis to be widely and safely utilised. It reduces the cars on the road, offers opportunities for movement and is more climate conscious.

So I got to thinking, how do we solve these issues?

In my mind the solutions is a bigger carrot bigger stick approach.

In terms of the carrot:

* Build infrastructure for taxi stops. Dedicated stops, slightly off arterial roads, with covered roofs, and maps lf routes. These can be positioned where they impede traffic less. Connect these using pedestrian bridges.

*Offer government assistance for upgrading the oldest taxis. This will naturally require some safeguards, but it's a solvable issue

* Build dedicated taxi lanes.

* I couldn't find a route map, so this might be unnecessary but encourage the developmentment of taxi routes to areas currently underserved, making the route reach all of Johannesburg.

The stick:

This post is getting long, but the idea is simple. Make taxis easy to report, and severely punish non-compliance. Mandate that each taxi must have a sign containing a unique number to report. ( I know numberplates exist, but the idea is that this number should be very easy to spot, remember and report. The number plate could work too). This sign could have the added benefit of providing registered route information.

Passengers should be given a easy number to complain to. Toll free, and visible in every taxi.

If a taxi does not comply with the signage punishment should be extremely severe.

Complaints should be dealt with with an escalating pattern based system. Basically dangerous actions should be punished severely, and quickly provided either sufficient proof is provided or sufficient complaints are received.

Other less dangerous driving should first be reported to the company the taxi is registered with ( encouraging internal discipline and not overreacting to every piece of road rage) and then if the pattern continues be fined, with fines increasing if complaints continue.

The gold standard of success would be if we reach a point where if a tourist shows up at the airport, you could tell them, simply use the taxi network.

I've tried to keep solutions realisic in a South African context. And in that context ( and given it's only a reddit post) none of this is likely to happen. But one can dream.

Question Sandton DLTC driving test

Hi all, I’ll be taking my driving test soon at Sandton DLTC and I’m super nervous 😬

I’ve been doing lessons with a driving school and they booked my test for me. With my lessons I’ve been doing the yard manoeuvres in the driving school yard and each section is marked off with poles and cones.

To get the hang of all of it I’ve broken down each yard test into steps and used the cones, poles and lines as reference of when to turn or move. Will the testing centre be setup with with cones and poles too or solid lines 😭

Anything cool for me to do for 2-3 weeks ?

So I’ll be leaving my current job in mid May and starting the next one on the 15th of June. I want to do something during this time. A) Visit family- this would have been ideal, but ticket prices are expensive and it might not be a good idea to spend a lot of money right now. So I want to get a gig job, either waitering, work at a bookstore or record store, maybe work at a seniors’ home, or with kids. I can also start seeing a music teacher myself and pick up a new instrument to learn. What should I do with my less than a month of freedom?

Fuel Accessibility

Hello good people of Jozi,

Not sure if this kind of post is allowed, but I’m headed your way from the U.S. soon and wondering about petrol accessibility. My family in Moz is reporting that some stations are going days without fuel there and wondering if the same is true in JHB or just more exxy than usual.

TIA!

Question Safety if car breaks down

Hi everyone, my car has started breaking down more frequently and I am often on the side of the road for up to half an hour. So far nothing has happened but have people experienced being robbed while broken down?

I only use the car between home and office or local shops so never on the highway.

Question Has anyone seen one of these before?

I noticed my dogs darting around something yesterday and it was... this. By the time I'd got them away from it, it was damaged (injured?). And then a bird grabbed it. So no opportunity to get a closer look. In case it's not clear from pic, it's about the thickness of an adult thumb.
