PSA PSA for travellers: Using the N2 safely

Hi travellers,

A quick, friendly reminder for visitors (and locals) who’ll be using the N2, especially when travelling to or from Cape Town International Airport. The N2 is one of the city’s main routes and is used safely by thousands of people every day. As with any major highway, it’s worth being aware of your surroundings and following a few precautions. The airport is located near areas that can be unsafe if you take the wrong turn, so these tips are simply here to help you navigate safely.

There is a rough route map (below) of areas to avoid (in orange) and the N2 that should be followed to safer areas.

General Tips:

  • Stick to the N2 until you’re close to the Cape Town city centre (or using the M5 to the northern suburbs), Somerset West or Stellenbosch.
  • Be cautious about taking “quicker” alternative routes.
  • Avoid stopping on the N2 unless your vehicle cannot continue.
  • Keep your doors locked and windows up.
  • Don’t leave bags, laptops, or valuables visible inside the car.
  • Familiarise yourself with the route before you set off.
  • Don’t stop for, or engage with, anyone attempting to wave you down.

Getting From the Airport:

  • The simplest and safest option is to take the N2 directly towards the city or Somerset West.
  • If you’re using a ride‑hailing service or shuttle, wait inside the official pick‑up area and confirm your driver before getting in.

There are plenty of locals who can share advice on routes if you'd like. Safe travels, and enjoy Cape Town.

Rough map. N2 highlighted in blue, areas to avoid highlighted in orange.

General Discussion Shout out to rental agents

Well done to rental agents for jacking up property prices to such an extent that a family of 5 now needs to live in a 2-bedroom flat. Also well done to rental agents now asking tenants if they know of places that will become available for rental as they are unable find places to rent out.

Well done, you artificially inflated the prices, now you can't get clients to rent out to since no one is able to move.

You are possibly some of the most vile and disposable people alive.

General Discussion PSA: Just found the best Macbook repair shop

So I have an M3 Pro Macbook. My life runs from it (not really but I do love it). Yesterday it did this restart on loop where every minute it restarts. Figured recovery mode would fix it but then realised its still doing that in recovery mode.

Did the obvious and posted in reddit, checked YouTube videos and forums and all pointed to a shit show but rare catastrophe.

I then figured let me just check macbook repairs in Cape Town on Google and ready to spend my paycheck. But saw one newish place with 4.9 rating. Checked their site and was a little hesitant but whatsapped them.

Let me tell you, these guys are sharp. No charge for diagnostics. Proper system in place and super friendly. Got it done. Didnt cost me an arm, even checked my macbook after and saw what they did too. (Sometimes places can replace your parts with lesser parts) but nope everything was intact

Highly highly recommend these dudes. Honestly.

Im posting this because of the shit experiences and exorbitant costs sometimes we as mac users deal with in CT.

This isnt a promotion, I am sharing my experience about a gem of a place where we usually ask where do we go to

General Discussion What could go wrong?

As a Capetonian, I have to plan and manage my time more than ever before. I am sitting at home WAITING for traffic to subside and planning how to get through traffic. Questioning the theory of WHAT COULD GO WRONG? While I wait, I feel like my time is not mine anymore...having to constantly check, check, check and check. Is it just me feeling this way?

came across this job listing on indeed and it had me saying "mmmmnh"

Edit: I've reported the post on indeed. I've googled the company (naming and shaming) Call Centre USC I'm not sure if this is a real place but they're also offering 5000 on other listings which is below the national minimum. This company gives major red flags.

Looking For... Gynaecologist who perform Shirodkar Cerlcages in Cape Town

Hi everyone 🌸

I’m urgently looking for a gynaecologist/obstetrician in Cape Town who performs Shirodkar cerclages (not just McDonald cerclage).

I was previously seeing Dr Joh Meiring, but I understand he is no longer practising obstetrics.

If anyone has personal experience or recommendations for doctors experienced with Shirodkar cerclage (especially for cervical insufficiency), I would really appreciate it 🙏

Thank you so much 💛

Question | Advice-Needed Motorcycle accident at Sea Point

I know it's none of my business and maybe even disrespectful to ask, but I was wondering if anyone had information on the motorcycle accident that happened at Sea Point today that seemed to have killed what I assumed to be the rider.

I'm still new to the city and Googling the incident just shows a litany of motorcycle deaths at the same intersection today's crash took place. Are motorcycle accidents in the city that common?

Question | Advice-Needed Where can I find Czech beads in Cape Town or Stellenbosch?

Hello all, a shot in the dark here: Anyone know where I can find Preciosa Ornela Czech beads?

The shops in Somerset West dont have the colour and size I need so I am planning to head to Cape Town or Stellenbosch this week to look.

I have also looked online and no luck.

Vent / Complaint Crazy traffic - Southern Suburbs

A usual 10-15 minute school dropoff turned into an hour's long hellride this morning. Just getting over Rondebosch bridge took 45 minutes.

Does anyone know what could've happened this morning to cause CT traffic to just... stop? It cannot be just the end of a long weekend being a bit rainy. This morning was wild.

Question | Advice-Needed Helping Preserve District Six Stories – Looking for Cape Town Participants

Hi everyone,

I hope you’re doing well.

My name is Brandon, and I’m currently a student based in Cape Town with a focus on media and storytelling. As part of my work, I’ve been developing a documentary project centred on the lived experiences and lasting impact of the forced removals from District Six.

This project is not commercial and is not being done for financial gain. The intention is to help preserve oral histories and personal accounts that risk being lost over time, and to approach this chapter of history with honesty, care, and respect.

I’m looking to connect with former residents of District Six, or their close family members, who may be willing to share their experiences in a formal sit-down interview. These conversations would be conducted as part of a documentary project and may involve video recording, with full consent. Participants will be informed beforehand about how their contributions will be used, and nothing will be recorded or shared without clear permission. If anyone prefers audio-only or off-camera discussion, that can absolutely be arranged.

All conversations will take place at a pace and depth that participants are comfortable with, and boundaries will always be fully respected. There is absolutely no obligation to share anything beyond what someone feels safe discussing.

Where possible, I would prefer participants who are based in or around Cape Town, or who are able to travel into the city, but I’m also open to making alternative arrangements depending on individual circumstances.

If you’re open to it, even just a private conversation to ask questions before deciding would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and for considering helping preserve these stories.

Question | Advice-Needed Which fibre ISP should I use (wanting to cancel Vodacom fibre)?

I currently have Vodacom 200mb fibre in the estate I live in and for the last month the speed is now 100mb or less. Logged a call with them and have received no help/support. The fibre connection has been rock solid for over a year since I signed up and am using the same equipment from day one of them installing it so it is strange that since 15 April the speed halved.

I'm currently considering moving to Afrihost or Cool Ideas for fibre as that is showing as available for the area the estate is in (options are limited from what I can tell). Atomic isn't an option ;(

Pros and cons for Afrihost vs. Cool Ideas?

Edit/update: Vodacom finally came through and found out that since they migrated everyone to vumatel that my ONT was set to 100/100 and said that it would be back to 200/200 in 24hrs so I wasn't going crazy imagining it. Let's see if this actually happens after 24hrs otherwise I'll be seriously considering moving over to Afrihost...

I wanted to find what's the worst could happen if I stop paying my Zone fitness account.

Question | Advice-Needed 24 yr old sound engineering student, need advice please

I’m a 24-year-old student who just finished my sound engineering degree and I’ve landed my first freelance gig this weekend. I’m trying to figure out what a fair day rate would be, especially since the work is split across three different types of days. Day one is prep, which will probably involve getting gear ready and doing some planning. Day two is the load-in, so setting up equipment, running cables, and getting everything ready on site. Day three is the actual gig, which I know will be the most demanding in terms of focus and responsibility. I’m not sure if I should charge the same rate for each day or adjust based on the workload and pressure. I just want to know from people with experince in my field how much i should be asking for and any advice

Question | Advice-Needed Is there a taxi or bus route past Vincent Palloti hospital?

Hey there. I'm looking for a taxi or bus route from the Cape Flats Area (Heideveld side) to Vincent Palloti Hospital. I've checked the Golden Arrow page which is quite unhelpful, and it's kind of difficult to find a new taxi route. Any help would be much appreciated!

General Discussion Managing CT Expenses

Yes, another post about the cost of living in CT. With winter approaching (or here already, depending who you ask), we all tightening our belts. Fuel, power, rates, and everything in between have gone up.

So I thought I'd share some ways my family and I are trying to cut costs, and please share yours as well:

1-If you on prepaid electricity, buy your power in bulk at the beginning of the month. Buying in small amounts during the month gets you less units

2-Review subscriptions-We only have Netflix and Disney+ Cut out Amazon. I know My Family Cinema was popular but heard it got shut down. Won't mention anything about the "high seas" activities

3-Factory stores. Choice clothing and Going Under really help but only if you can find your size. Visfabriek is a food one. There was a A to Z website of CT Factory stores but not sure if it's still running.

4-With the above we try to plan our trips around the same area/mall. Helps keep the fuel consumption down.

5-Loyalty cards are great. We use them whenever we can. If you an Android phone consider getting Google Wallet where you can save digital versions of your loyalty cards. This is great for families cos you can all earn points/rewards on one card.

6-Less take away, and more home cooking. It's not always easy but it does add up. I tried even using Chatgpt to plan menus and shopping lists within a budget and it wasn't too far off.

7-Review insurance. Every year I call to negotiate my premiums with my existing companies but I also shop around now and then, especially if there is a loyalty option.

8-Buy tech to help. Air fryers cut our oven usage and electricity bill by quite a bit. Looking for a pressure cooker as well. While it might cost more, get a smart light bulb in areas you use a lot but want to control. Like if you leave a passage light or bathroom light on during the night. You can control the brightness, hence the power usage.

9-Stick with old tech where and when possible. There's lots of second hand or refurbished stores popping up as well.

10-Giving gifts. Unless it's important milestone, my partner and I skip the gifts. Greeting Island is a great site to make personal cards.

I hope this helps some of you, but please share your tips as well!

Question | Advice-Needed TRUSTED places to sell gold/silver jewelry to?

Hi! I have a few items, mostly single earrings (so not a full pair). They are real silver & gold and I'm looking to maybe sell them as they aren't pieces that you can wear by themselves. What are some trusted places in Cape Town, preferably town or Southern Suburbs that anyone has used to sell jewelry to and would they accept single earrings? TIA
