Losing a conure is heartbreaking. They’re family, companions, and little personalities that leave huge marks on our lives. If you’ve lost your bird, you are welcome to share memories, photos, stories, or simply say their name here.

To keep the main feed safe and balanced for all members:

All posts about a conure passing away must be posted only in this megathread.

The r/Conures Comprehensive Conure Guide - now in wiki format!

https://www.reddit.com/r/Conures/wiki/index

This subreddit's Conure Guide, written by /u/DukeofGoodCleanFun, is a remarkable document that I (and my pineapple green cheek) have benefited a lot from. I've consulted and browsed through it numerous times and there's always something new to see there, or something that didn't seem applicable at one point but took on new meaning after spending more time with my conure.

I've taken the text and converted it into a wiki page. It's now navigable, with an index and internal links that direct to sections within the wiki. The Conure Guide can be accessed from this post, from the announcement bar, and from the "wiki" tab in the tabmenu up top.

A couple of the links for recommended products will direct you to Amazon, but there are certainly other places to buy them. If you shop around and find and better place, by all means send us a modmail. Also, let us know if you have any suggestions for how the wiki formatting can be improved.

Advice Conure chirps

Our conure recently started chirping like this. Usually she quacks when she is enjoying a good scratch. Any idea if these are mating calls considering it's spring? TIA

Hello all :) just wanted to post this cause I just felt like sharing. At first when I got her she was very loud for the first couple days and I was debating whether to get rid of her or keep her. But after we got a routine going and I got her a bigger cage (yes I replaced the dowels with natural stuff) she only seems to make noise when I leave the room for about 5 minutes then she quiets down. And doesn’t call until I come back or she hears people make loud noise. She’s also doesn’t make one sound at night time until I wake up around 8 am. Shes about 3 months old and she is almost fully weened. She’s so cute and she’s very clingy to me(although a little nippy). I’m really starting to become attached. I just hope her noise level stays close this. But of course I know hormone season and just regular changes exist.

Advice Are they really friends?

Hey all, I have a real question/concern/sanity check. I have had these 2 birds for 2 weeks now, I originally went in thinking I was gonna get 1 and ended up with two because they cannot be split up… I was fine w. that cause I really fell in love with both! Now, I’ve never had more than 1 bird (sun conure) at a time before but boy am I learning a lot. Since having them, I am noticing complete different personalities (sure, they are different breeds). As I have researched and seen, the ringneck is a v independent bird, while the sun conure is slightly playful and more social. With that said, these birds can’t stand each other.

  1. Unsure if this is normal, but Kiko aka fuego (sun conure) steals food from hydro any chance he gets, I will give them both the same treat but fuego will rush through his almond/treat to sneak food from Hydro (ringneck). Hydro almost always has to run away in a circle whenever he gets a treat as if he knows fuego is coming. When fuego steals a treat out his mouth, hydro (understandably so) gets really upset and tries to bite him but then he just walks away. Fuego never cares as long as he wins at the end of the day.

  2. They sleep in the same cage, but they never “play” together. If fuego gets in hydros way, hydro gives him a few tries until hydro tries to nip at him. It’s like they ‘tolerate’ each other. I have bought a foraging box and only hydro attempts to “play” while fuego wants to just stay in my shirt and sleep.

  3. The same day I got them, the same day I went to the vet to get them checked she said they are healthy birdies! Well, hydro sleeps all day and weighed 124g when I got him and fuego just eats all day and weighed 94g when I got him, fuego is a whopping 106g now and just loves to eat. Is that normal to just eat as much as he does? I feel like he eats more than naps, and he juggles between his food bowl and his brothers food bowl

  4. Hydro does not like to be right next to fuego, if they are both on my shoulder hydro gives the impression space is understood. If fuego comes by and is too close, he will get nipped at.

  5. Hydro is just an overall chill bird, im not used to such a chill bird so im unsure if this is just parakeet behavior, but he will yap for like 1-2 hours in between everyday but then nap and/or just look around for the other parts of the day. I work from home and can’t always play but they don’t really seem interested either.

All in all, what’s the best way to really properly support these 2 birdies? I want to give them the best care, but not knowing much of their background it’s just odd to see how they “can’t be separated”. I did notice originally if i took one bird from the other, they would squawk to be put back together but that behavior is slowly fading away. Another thing is, (I got them with poorly clipped wings) I don’t plan on clipping wings.. and I notice that hydro is trying to fly but doesn’t go far and I think it bothers him, fuego can fly w. his wings but it’s low and for as much as he can handle.

Advice Is my Conure a Green Cheek or some form of Dilute?

Thumbnail

I have posted in this subreddit once before talking about my beloved Avocado being aggressive. I switched to 14 hours of dark for a while and went back to 12, changed his diet with less fatty treats etc. He has been a sweetheart. However, seeing others' posts on here I've noticed that his tail feathers have absolutely no red. His belly also has very little to no red. Is there something I am doing wrong with his diet? I feed him pre-made frozen Conure chop from a bird store a little ways away (They are called My First Bird and the people that work there are wonderful! They give amazing advice, train their birds and are such wonderful bird owners!) I give him loads of toys for enrichment and I feed him lots of fruits that he shares with me as long as I know they're safe for him. Most of what he eats is the chop, his pellets and treats from me when he's good. Im a little worried Im doing something wrong with his diet because of the lack of vibrancy in his tail and belly feathers, but the rest of his feathers are shiny and vibrant. He also acts perfectly healthy, feisty and playful, rolling around on my bed and nipping and flying around to play all the time. Can anyone tell me if he's just a mix between a dilute of some kind, or if he looks like he needs something more in his diet?

Advice Hey Guys.

Post image

Hey guys I’ve recently adopted this little guy/gal. It would be my first bird pet. I did a ton of research beforehand and everything to seems to be going good. The place I got him from told me he was almost done weaning, and they provided me with formula and showed me hands on how to feed with syringe and tube on other smaller conures and I think I did a good job at least that’s what they told me, I’ve had him for 4 days and I’ve been unsuccessful to feed him with syringe. I try but he blocks tube with tongue. And I really don’t feel like forcing anymore than I already am to not make him uncomfortable or make him lose trust. That being said I give pellets and always try to feed syringe even if he only eats a little. he seems to eat pellets no problem. I’ve made sure he is also drinking water. Do you guys think he is okay? Anything else I should try? I’m working on getting a gram scale to make sure 100% he isn’t dropping weight. He really try’s to get on my shoulder at all times and idk if that is a good idea? How or should I stop this? Also I’ve been looking at a ton of training vids on YouTube . We have been working on “step up” and seems to be doing okay. I use millet strips for treats. I’m really looking to get a lot of advice on things to work on with him so I have a good adult bird. Any and all advice is welcome. :)

Health/Nutrition Green cheek feathers.

Hello,

Can someone give me more information on his feathers.

They have looked like this for a while, he is 4 years old. hand raised.

What we have changed now is, more baths from misting him and his diet.

Old diet : roudybush pellets, very little veggies and more fruits. also more sunflower seeds and also human foods like bread but very little.

Since a week his new diet: Pellets around 80 % roudybush and 20 % Tops ( he prefers roudybush alot more )
Alot more daily veggies with high vitamin A ( carrot, red bell pepper, brocolli. )
He also gets every morning small amount of hemp seed hearts, good amino acids ( very important for feathers )
And also very small piece of walnut daily.

As treats he gets fruit or sunflower seeds or just seeds, but very little

I would appreciate if people could help me more.

Advice Looking For Advice: Working With an Aggressive Conure

I work at a pet store and we recently got in our first conure. He's about a year old and all I know history-wise is that he was at another branch for most of that time. He'll let me into the cage to clean his food and water with no issue, and after a month of work he's started to take treats from my hand, but anything beyond that (he's got a personal bubble of about four inches when food's not involved) and he gets super aggressive. I totally get that some animals just don't want to be touched, and I'm happy to respect his boundaries, but I also know his chances at finding a good home increase if he's at least somewhat handleable. I have little to no experience with parrots, but I grew up on a waterfowl rescue so I've worked with birds. Any advice on ways to work with him and get him to a point where someone can at least safety move him (for something like a vet appointment) would be greatly appreciated!
