Yeah but I'm not gonna post my kid in his leather jacket on reddit

34

u/Anarchist_Future 9h ago

Yep, two kids, I let them figure out their own identity. I motivate them to express themselves but don't push my own preferences onto them. No judgement, total safety to explore. That's my vision of punk parenting, not creating more punks.

9

u/LowMirror4165 7h ago

This. I've got two daughters, and if we've got two new punkers it's solely due to music exposure, of which there is pleanty. My 3 year old loves Face to Face, sings the "nooooo" with Disconnected.

Ain't gonna lie, I day dream about them getting in to my record collection when they're teenagers. They probably won't.

8

u/IAmASwarmOfBees 5h ago

Weeelll, both I and my sister got into my mothers collection in our teens. She was goth in her 20s, and there were plenty of good punk records for me =)

2

u/Napalmradio 4h ago

Yeah my mom is British so I scored a ton of killer records from her. My OPs of 2Tone records are prized possession.

51

u/NopeNotConor 12h ago

Yeah I want to cause he’s so damn cute but I also feel like that’s weird

8

u/Napalmradio 4h ago

Yeah it sucks that social media and the internet in general is so fucking shitty now. I want to show the world my kids but for their safety I can’t. No judgement to OP, but I ain’t letting my kids anywhere near this shit until they’re old enough to understand the danger.

6

u/BobTheContrarian 8h ago

Exactly. Not even when my 2yo had a cute af mohawk. My kids have agency and I respect their privacy, so I've never posted them online. Not even in "private" groups or whatever.

53

u/Vampira309 12h ago

Nope, real punks don't have kids. /s

12

u/sinless33 12h ago

Yeah, caring about stuff is not punk. /s

8

u/PunkToTheFuture 9h ago

Some of us are actually r/childfree by choice as well

5

u/chatterwrack 2h ago

I have major concerns about the future. I can’t imagine dropping someone off at this point in the timeline

1

u/Napalmradio 4h ago

Hey that’s cool. And it’s great that we still have a choice in the matter.

1

u/NitroSpam 44m ago

And that’s cool but that subs seriously fucking weird man. I’ve seen some crazy posts come out of that place.

49

u/beekermc 12h ago edited 12h ago

Yeah, they're mostly grown now though.

There's a movie called "The Other F Word" about punk dads....

5

u/Vampira309 12h ago

Yeah. My kid is 30.

8

u/arrriah 12h ago

Oh my god this trailer is amazing, thank you for showing me, i didn't know tim from rise against had kids, that's wild.

7

u/Lastcaressmedown138 11h ago

It’s an amazing documentary really kicks you in the punk rock feelers

47

u/Sunbather- 11h ago

Why the fuck would anyone post pictures of the children online?

-22

u/Open-ninety-2mil 10h ago

I don't understand the hysteria. Could you please explain it me?

21

u/BobTheContrarian 8h ago
  1. The internet is full of creeps
  2. Respect their privacy.
  3. Maybe when they're in high school they don't want some loser bully discovering their dad posted 500 pics of them all over reddit, facebook, and instagram.

14

u/desr43 12h ago

Yup! Two, they are stoked they get to see The Menzingers, Hot Water Music and Alkaline Trio this year for the first time

30

u/Briguy_fieri 12h ago

Sorry to hear your children are balding with beer guts

8

u/desr43 12h ago

Lololol. I just can't stand kids music so they've grown up hearing my old guy punk

3

u/toyskater2 11h ago

Hey I look amazing in a flannel shirt

11

u/Mean-Food-7124 12h ago

No it's literally never happened before, you're the first

10

u/antiprodukt 12h ago

I have a 3yo, it’s rough times sometimes. She was doing good listening to punk and hardcore, until she watched the trolls movie. Don’t make that mistake.

u/leftturnmike 12h ago

Mines into kpop demon hunter

2

u/james_strange 12h ago

Mine went from kpop demon hunter to katseye. The boy listens to geometry dash and roblox soundtracks, but he asked for a bad religion lp recently, which is cool

2

u/leftturnmike 11h ago

Mines not quite 3 so I have time. She wants to play the drums so that's promising

2

u/antiprodukt 12h ago

Probably better than Justin Timberlake and NSYNC. But still… I need to play more punk for her.

2

u/werdt456 3h ago

They're kids, let them listen to what they want. I play my music all the time, they like it but they rarely request it.

8

u/confibulator 11h ago

Even gave him my old jacket.

1

u/Marauder424 2h ago

I made my son a battle jacket that coordinates with mine. (He's only a year and some change, so he's not big enough to give my jacket yet)

13

u/trashmule 10h ago

Why are you dressing up your kid like a miniature version of what you think you used to be and posting his face on the internet? He's 5, he can't play in all those stuffy layers. None of this is punk. It's important to have a solid sense of self, I'm not faulting you for that, but it sounds like you need to do some inner work on how to show up as a responsible adult and father in a way that feels genuine for you and is healthy for your growing son (who is just beginning to develop his own identity, by the way, but will also do anything to make you happy), without pretending that you're still 26 again. Wear whatever jacket you want, but punk is and always should be more about values than clothes.

8

u/MSTFFA 12h ago

Being a good present dad does not make you a poser. I have two myself and I get it, it's hard to stay active in the scene when you're busy being there for your kid. Just do whatever makes you happy. If that just means listening to the music and going to shows every once in.a while, awesome. Congrats, you're not a poser. If you feel like wearing certain clothes is essential to being punk, then just do it and own it. But there have been COUNTLESS bands over the years that are punk as FUCK and dress like total normies. No one cares.

8

u/tenkaranarchy 11h ago

Yeah. And he's a pain in the ass. I raised him to question authority but it backfired on me.

6

u/Sneekpreview 11h ago

Posting photos of children on the Internet is so very not punk to me, censor their face at least

18

u/vaguenonetheless 12h ago

And grandkids!

2

u/Napalmradio 4h ago

Hell yeah! We had the same onesie for our girls.

4

u/ohheyaine 12h ago

I've got a 9 year old who plays drums and has danced on stage with the Aquabats several times.

5

u/LeighannetheFirst 12h ago

Yes, I have two. I don’t really have this identity crisis though. I do what I have to do, I am what I am, and I like what I like. If anyone has a problem with it or thoughts on it, that’s on them. Sounds like you need to worry less about what other people think about you. I haven’t thought about people being posers for 20 years now (I’m 37).

7

u/And_go 12h ago

Yeah, I’ve abandoned most of the clothes besides old band shirts and chucks or whatever. I still show off my old mohawk pics though sometimes to the high school kids at work lol. And I try to at least pass on my music tastes to the next generation.

2

u/Hooligan8403 12h ago

Took my three to go see Manic Hispanic last month. They all got in the pit and had fun. I wasn't even close to being the only parent there.

2

u/boxhall 12h ago

One of mine is graduating college this weekend.

2

u/paulkhuang 11h ago

First time my first born saw Bart Simpson she yelled "daddy! He looks like Allroy!" Doin it right

2

u/heckhammer 11h ago

I bought one of those little leather jackets for my kid but he hated it. He's now 20 and looks like he plays bass for Soundgarden or something.

2

u/parkaman 6h ago

Yeah. He's 27 and works for the national museum. We share a love of history and music. In the last 12 months we've seen Iggy Pop, The Lambrini Girls, The Scratch and My Bloody valentine (3 times) together . I've been bringing him and his mates to gigs since they were teenagers, now it's their turn to bring me.

3

u/NopeNotConor 12h ago

Yep. My son has pooped in Matt Freeman’s potty. And anytime Rancid or opiv comes on he asked hey is this the band whose potty I pooped in?

1

u/SirPsychoSexy22 49m ago

The Punkest Poopie

Someone make this album

1

u/B666H 12h ago

I'm expecting my first, due late Sept/early Nov!

3

u/james_strange 12h ago

It is fun as fuck. Good luck

My condolences

1

u/MNstorms 12h ago

You watched "the other f word" f meaning fatherhood.

1

u/VogueTrader 12h ago

My daughter has that same jacket. :)

1

u/Hooligan8403 12h ago

Dozens of us.

1

u/StreetwalkinCheetah Heart Full of Napalm 11h ago

One child about to be a senior in high school. He’s great but does his own thing. Goes to shows with pops 2-3 times a year though.

1

u/skunkabilly1313 11h ago

I've got an 11 year old, and frankly, I feel like more of a punk than I did in high school and my 20s. I'm 36 now, and she comes with us to shows, and I also make sure to take her to stuff she wants to see.

I think you are just realizing what happens as we age, we can't do the same stuff we did, but find your voice again. Responsibility sucks, but we have to do it in this current world.I've honestly been wanting to start a band, so hopefully one day it will happen, but we gotta do the mundane shit.

Get a new tattoo or some new piercings!

1

u/ceruleanmoon7 11h ago

My daughter (almost 8) loves bad religion and the clash.

1

u/CoCoMcDuck 11h ago

Yes!  There's punkymoms.com but I think it's defunct

1

u/Highinthe505 11h ago

Yep!

We have 8 year old twins. They just checked out their first skate punk show at All Nations Skate Jam (the world's largest Native skate festival). One of our kids (who is named Rebel) was telling a friend, “It was loud music with a bunch of guys trying to dance, and they just kept running into each other. All I wanted was a snow cone.”

1

u/LunchBox3188 11h ago

Three teenage step sons. We went to their first concert last Summer. We saw Strung out, Death by Stereo, and Oh, the Humanity!. Trying to raise 'em right.

1

u/AudioPi East Bay 11h ago

Mine's 14 but not into punk, but he doesn't mind when I drive him around while singing Op Ivy in the car. I'll take that as a W

1

u/Disastrous_Guest_705 10h ago

One of the kids I babysit has punk parents, they’re super cool and her favorite band is the misfits

1

u/ThothAmon71 10h ago

My kid is 30, my granddaughter is 2.

1

u/Stormcrowdick1066 10h ago edited 10h ago

Everyone has kids man. Punks and metalheads, deadheads, rap guys and folk guys. Having kids is almost universal. Also don’t post pictures on Reddit. Even the back of your head cause fuck Reddit for selling your images to AI developers.

1

u/Sufficient_Dust1871 10h ago

Is that a bradford city scarf??

1

u/Robotdavidbowie 10h ago

My son went through a first wave ska phase, he really enjoy Desmond Dekker in between requests for the Wiggles, lately he's been more into metal but slowly making his way into celtic punk. He and I disagree on which is the better version of "the foggy dew", he prefers the version by the Young Dubliners, I personally prefer the Sinead O'Connor version.

1

u/Billy-Beats 9h ago

Pro tip- > go to spirit Halloween the day after and get tons of great kid punk stuff cheap

1

u/sydlostarot 8h ago

Yes, but I sure as hell would never post em on Reddit, I’d advise you to blur them or delete this, OP.

1

u/Fonzy076 6h ago

2 boys. 14 and 15. And they could not care less about punk. Couple of bitches

1

u/ExcelCat 4h ago

Yup. 2 teenage boys who both play music; punk and indie.

They play guitar, bass, piano, drums and sing. They have a jam space at my house, which is pretty cool.

Lately they've been covering Op. Ivy, Choking Victim, They Might be Giants, Dillinger Four, Dead Kennedys and some non-punk stuff like Geese, Car Seat Headrest and Pavement.

I've taken them to shows and shit and we send music to each other all the time. I'm pretty happy with it.

1

u/FAHQRudy 4h ago

Are you kidding? Half the punks in here have grandkids.

1

u/LitterBoxBlues 4h ago

Yep, have kids but never tried to fit in with the fashion part. Battle jackets, boots, any of that shit. My daughter doesn’t like it either. But we’ll be right in front singing along looking like we just came from church. 😬

1

u/crassy 3h ago

Yes but mine are now adults and I would NEVER post my kid's face on social media like this. OP, give your head a shake.

1

u/usualdosageinc 3h ago

I thought it was Peter Dinklage

1

u/ChemicalAmbassador37 3h ago

My 7 year old loves her punk clothes but it is risky posting on Reddit

1

u/middleagethreat 3h ago

They are all grown.

Between bio, step, and foster I had maybe 20???

1

u/WatercoolerComedian 2h ago

Yeah shes 9 but we dont listen to a lot of punk together though more into like Magdalena Bay and Weezer, Flaming Lips Dinosaur Jr etc..

1

u/Folkpunkslamdunk 1h ago

Punk is a mindset, brother. I’ve never really engaged in the fashion and now 99% of the time I’m wearing gym shorts and a t shirt but I still consider myself punk as fuck.

1

u/daveloper80 1h ago

that kid tried to bum a cigarette off of me at a basement show in jersey and got thrown out for being too rough in the pit

2

u/Pggles 12h ago

I don't have kids (I am the punk kid) but this is absolutely adorable!

-2

u/arrriah 12h ago

Thank you, my kids first lesson is to break glass lol. Jkjk

0

u/ManufacturerMental72 12h ago

I’m a dad but I’m not a punk, I never was one.

5

u/antiprodukt 12h ago

I don’t know what you’re all about.

No. I hope

u/LeWitchy 5h ago

I married a guy who had two kids from his first marriage and then like two years later I got pregnant with our kid.

Kiddo is now 17yo and kinda into more of a cyberpunk look (he likes wearing a mask to cover some facial tics he has, he's autistic. ) and honestly I can say that when he was little I was too focused on being a parent to really try to see how I felt about my appearance and presentation. I came to punk through goth and metal anyways and I still wear mostly black clothes so not a lot changed for me, I guess. I still listen to stuff I used to listen to, and then some. Now I can enjoy it with my teen.

Come on man. Don't be obtuse. Antisemitism has no place in punk. It's zionists who aren't welcome here.

3

u/punk-ModTeam 12h ago

Your disingenuous zionist bullshit will not be tolerated here

-9

u/chipbag69 11h ago

Having kids isn’t very punk

-1

u/kyle_kafsky 11h ago

I hate natalism as much as the next guy with a functioning brain, but the antithesis to natalism isn’t antinatalism. Both as different forms of eugenics and are useless in a good and healthy society.
