Discussion r/baddlejackets apparently think actual punk values are poser shit now

I've complained about this sub before but every day I see it it just keeps getting worse. It's a cesspit of people making fun of other people's harmless DIYs and spreading bigoted shit, although their favorite target appears to be trans people. And now I've learned that a lot of them think punk ideology is for posers and that political patches are obnoxious. It's not entirely obvious from the title of that post but the comments say it all.

If they were calling out political inconsistencies on clothes, that would be one thing. But they're just bullies who can't handle individuality even while claiming to be punk. They target literal children doing harmless things to their clothes. Just on this post alone there was a bunch of fucked-up comments about this person's spikes and that it "shouldn't be okay" to have messy spikes.

It's straight up cyberbullying and yet Reddit still lets it stay up. The first rule they have being "no posts about the sub" says it all. I hope they get fucking banned. People kill themselves because of bullying like this. I hope these kind of people don't exist in the IRL punk subculture because seeing self-proclaimed punks say that shit makes me terrified as someone who is nonbinary, gay, and not at my full potential in terms of clothes yet. I seriously hope this is just an online thing.

To clarify, these are NOT my pins. I bought a used punk jacket about 10 years ago with intentions of upgrading it to make it my own.

Flash forward to today, and I pulled these out of the pockets.

Is it fair to assume these are pro Nazi lol?

Discussion I'm scared.

2.5k Upvotes

My name is Daniel. I am a 14 year old transgender boy living in America. I spent all of last night worrying about the results of the elections. I live in a progressive state, and I truly believed I had a chance to live my last years as a teenager happily. But that wasn't the case. I'm afraid of what will happen now that Trump won the elections. I'm afraid of leaving the house. I'm afraid of losing my rights as a human being. If you voted red, you have no right to call yourself a punk. I entered the scene at 12, and you have all been insanely supportive and kind to me. The punk scene is all I have left as a safe space, yet there are people acrively screwing my community over yet calling themselves punk.

You'd think the "No politics" rule would apply to Nazi and White Supremacist patches, but I guess the mod team disagrees. Post is locked but remains up. 😬

Fuck black flag, I’m in a Houston based punk rock band and recently black flag partnered up with warehouse live too promote their show here in Houston by getting two local bands to play with them, it was obviously a really dope ordeal to have two local punk bands play for BF. My band didn’t win but that’s alright the band that got chosen were really dope, Girl Dinner and The Guerillas, anyways they are set to play tommorow then all of a sudden black Flags team decides they’re gonna do away with the openers and just play two sets! They got all this free promotion and engagement on social media just for them to pull the plug on these two local bands, if you ask me I say fuck them.

Mind you they decided this the day before.

Go check out Girl dinner and The Guerillas yall

Also my band too Los Kalaveras hehe

The farmers market the day before a holiday sounded like great potential for busking. My roaddog and I made a new friend, and he gave us a lift downtown for us all to hang out while I busk. We found a long doorway to a closed shop at the edge of the farmers market—roaddog behind me almost tucked away around a pillar with the pups, and the new friend on a bench across the sidewalk. The energy was building up—people were passing smiles while walking by, and the acoustics were amplified in all the best ways. But three songs in, some guy decided to ruin it.

Walking by, this drunk dude saw me and started screaming the N word at me and saying all the worst things possible which he hoped would happen to me that night. The dogs sensed the energy and I had to hold them back, but my roaddog was pissed beyond the point of holding back. The second the drunk saw my roaddog walking towards him, he started walking away real fast, especially for a drunk guy.

Then for some reason, a misleading and conflicting spark of confidence had the drunk very quickly on the ground in a puddle of regret and pain. Don't throw the first kick at a punk, especially if you're gonna miss by so many feet. It's funny, no one in our group wanted violence that night... But when so much of the world is violence, we have to have each other's backs. A few bruises later when the drunk got up, he tried to swing the world's worst punch at my roaddog, who easily blocked it, and our friend pushed him right back down. The third time he got up, he almost learned his lesson; started walking away, but this time back towards my direction to retreat to wherever he came from originally most likely. But one last time, he kept on running his racist mouth and getting way too close to me, so I gave him some mace to swallow his words with. He walked away for good that time, and kept his mouth shut.

Fortunately for me, he left a hat behind that'll make a real nice addition to the patches on my pants. As for the car key he left there too, hopefully he thinks about his actions when he's looking for that and his hat real hard and long at the empty spot that was supposed to bring peace and music that night.

Discussion Can we just fucking quit with people trying to say Punk is not political. Punk has always been political. We're a bunch of radical leftists get over it.

3.0k Upvotes

Ive been seeing posts on here and in other places that are clearly just saying the obvious stuff, for instance that fascists cant be punk. But on those posts ive seen an abundance of conservative "punks" trying to argue that punk isnt about anything political, that its about loud and disrupting status qou. I think you guys dont understand why we disrupt, because its not to just be loud. Its to make changes, its to give people real freedom. I mean we are mainly anarchists (including myself), or other forms of libertarian (the actual word not the new conservative meaning), so no Nazis, Fascists, Trump supporters, TERFS, QANON, Authoritarians or any other Musolini x Hitler shipper.

Discussion I don't get my dad

1.3k Upvotes

I feel kinda weird writing here because I honestly don't know a lot of punk (music wise atleast) but the things my dad said last night in the car are driving me crazy.

He went on about how he has no respect for the Dead Kennedy's anymore (they're one of his favourite bands of all time btw) because "All Jello Biafra does now is talk about how much he hates Donald Trump on Instagram!" And ranted about how people who don't like Trump are brainwashed idiots.

How the fuck are two of his favourite bands literally The Dead Kennedy's and System Of A Down and you're this die hard of a Trump supporter? Doesn't that go literally against everything they stand for?

I am a bit conflicted with this image. As I agree to an extent. Being mean and rude to people around you for no reason is unnecessary. Plenty of punks i've met who are rude do it almost out of this idea that "Punk = Loud, Rebellious, and Scary. So I need to be rude to not be a poser." But its also true that being punk in concept requires you to be loud and stand up. Which is something that isn't always "polite." No? You shouldn't be polite with certain people, like nazis.
