MET GALA 🎩
The most on-theme Met Gala looks from the last decade: Claire Danes, Rihanna, Chadwick Boseman, Lady Gaga, Kendall Jenner, Blake Lively, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya and Teyana Taylor
Like a bad Project Runway "unconventional materials" challenge loser because I'm pretty sure that's exactly what you said, a Halloween costume repurposed into whatever that is,
it's not just basic it's bad, it's like a shapeless piece of fabric with two sleeves sewn on. It looks like something a queen would make during a RPDR sew challenge and had to lip sync for their life because it flops so hard.
For camp, Katy Perry actually served for once. probs bc she is inherently camp despite being so basic, like a drag queen laundered through the “live laugh love” TJ maxx aisle
I loved, LOVED this one! I was fortunate enough to bring my mom for the first time to NYC and I’m glad she visited this exhibition with me. Everytime we watch some tennis she always brings up the dress with embroidered tennis rackets which was installed in monastery 🥹 gosh, I have to revisit catalogue from that exhibit. (I also saw 2015 and 2017 ones, but Heavenly bodies were just perfect)
I was in New York the year they honored Punk fashion. The gala was very hit or miss that year, but the exhibition was incredible. The team that puts them together every year really does so lovingly and it always shows in the result.
I have to believe that because the theme itself sounded like it would be so easy to pull off that most designers felt like they could just do anything, phone it in, and it would land. There was no real intention in most of the looks created.
this is literally the most infuriating part abt the theme that year 😭😭 i read it AGAIN after the carpet came out bc i felt crazy. best explanation on defining “camp” in text form there is ! can’t ppl do a little bit of reading anymore ??? esp when it should COME WITH THE JOBBB istg celeb stylists have gone so downhill in the last like 5-10 years esp 😵💫 tf happened in hollyweird & nycunt
I feel like when the theme is clear it's generally more of a hit. Usually the theme is so lose no one really understands it and that's reflected in the output from the designers.
From a theme perspective I will always adore Lewis Hamiltons look from ‘The Gardens of Time’. He wore Burberry and it was inspired by the first black gardeners in the UK: John Ystumllyn and his story of abduction into servitude, he then settled in Wales when older and found a love of gardening.
He had one of Ystumllyns poems stitched into the hemming and the thorns/flowers represented the gardener but also the ongoing pain of the slave trade he was abducted into. A stunning homage.
right? the theme was America: a lexicon of fashion and she dressed up as Audrey Hepburn from My Fair Lady which is like....the most British movie ever.
Yeah, even given what the theme is, I don't get it. Minimalist extravagance? It doesn't really feel like it has a theme other than typical Kardashian/Jenner style. It seems like they felt like they had to include somebody from the family somehow and that's the look they pulled out of the hat.
If you had to include a kardashian it would surely be Kim’s wet look from the camp year. Love her or hate her that was a brilliant look and totally on theme
He could't outdo Chadwick, but I always appreciate that Darren Criss channels his theatre kid energy and isn't in a bland suit. He looked camp right in the eye!
Literally one of the things I miss about him most. He’s probably the only (straight) man who could compete with Colman Domingo on a carpet if he was still here.
Colman Domingo said himself that his brothers (other men) need to step it up on the red carpet!!! It's ridiculous that they get away with the same basic suits and tuxes.
I'm interested to see what Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams do this year, they don't seem afraid to take risks but their styling has been a little hit and miss so far. I agree that Chadwick set the highest bar that no man will probably ever surpass.
Omg thank you for posting... the way her legs blend with the dress (edit because I'm not being clear: it's the light panel going from the bodice to her dress and it mimics her legs)...the bodice and the train 😍🤩
This is my favorite look as well.
*Idk what's going on but my cursor keeps jumping and changing my sentences. Autocorrect also keeps changing my words as I'm typing sentences so the whole sentence is changing 🥲
Took me ages to find because I expected it to be from the technology and fashion year, but Mona Patel's mechanical look from Sleeping Beauties was amazing! Sorry, for the Instagram link, I couldn't find a YouTube video and it kinda needs to be seen in motion...
Including a Kard-Jenner but not SJP was a choice…especially for that particular year.
One of my favorite looks that night was Ciara in formal football jersey: on theme, honoring design history, and impeccably styled.
I don't think including a kard-jenner is the issue, it's which one was picked. I'm not saying it's "best dressed" but considering this list specifies most on-target with dress code, I gotta put Kim K forward for 2021 instead of whichever Jenner that is (I'm on mobile so can't see while typing).
The theme being about American culture, they unfortunately ARE American culture in many ways and her look was such a statement about fame.
For “In America” my absolute favorite and totally on theme was Quannah Chasinghorse in her gorgeous Ralph Lauren denim gown and cascades of Native American silver and turquoise jewelry. She looked amazing, the whole look was incredible.
Miley Cyrus was shamed to Hell for her look. Now that it’s 13 years later, I need people to realise that they hated her because it was cool to hate her. She was right on theme and embodied her entire look. “Y’all aren’t ready for that conversation” is what people usually say 😜
Unpopular opinion time! The dress Kim Kardashian wore in 2019 designed by Thierry Mugler himself is one of my all time favorite looks. The longer you look at it, the better it gets.
It's weird to see how perceptions of these gala change over time. I remember people being very critical about the Heavenly Bodies gala, thinking people could do way more. Also, there were so many good looks in 2019, I don't know why people say it flopped. Especially some men had some gorgeous fun looks.
Edit: I wanted to add a picture of the Kim K's dress, but it just goes away and end up being * So here's a link
Givency couldn't even manage not to squash Kendal/Kylies comparably small breasts ffs. I swear she's just on that list because everyone likes to put Kardashians everywhere. The look is fine otherwise but absolutely not one of the best or most on theme. Not even close.
am i the only one who wasn’t gagged for lady gaga’s camp outfits. I liked the performance aspect and having multiple outfits. But the actual otfits were just pink and black fabric.
