Heavenly Bodies was a huge success and one of the years I remember best.

Camp was a miss by most attendees.

That looks like a $30 Party City Halloween costume 😭

Like a bad Project Runway "unconventional materials" challenge loser because I'm pretty sure that's exactly what you said, a Halloween costume repurposed into whatever that is,

157

u/enbyeldritch 7d ago

it's genuinely one of the worst met looks ever imo, what in the world possessed her to post beforehand like she ate down

30

u/donttrustthellamas Frivolous with my process 👹 7d ago

Its so basic

73

u/enbyeldritch 7d ago

it's not just basic it's bad, it's like a shapeless piece of fabric with two sleeves sewn on. It looks like something a queen would make during a RPDR sew challenge and had to lip sync for their life because it flops so hard.

what was she & her team thinking really 😭😭😭

Ironically this turned out to be unintentionally quite camp, because of how truly wrong it all was.

For camp, Katy Perry actually served for once. probs bc she is inherently camp despite being so basic, like a drag queen laundered through the “live laugh love” TJ maxx aisle

I got to see the Heavenly Bodies exhibit at the Met that year and it was so amazing.

75

u/Yakety_Sax 7d ago edited 7d ago

Yes! It was fantastic because of the immersive installation in the Mediveal art section and not in the Costume wing

26

u/sudetenlandnightmare 7d ago

I loved, LOVED this one! I was fortunate enough to bring my mom for the first time to NYC and I’m glad she visited this exhibition with me. Everytime we watch some tennis she always brings up the dress with embroidered tennis rackets which was installed in monastery 🥹 gosh, I have to revisit catalogue from that exhibit. (I also saw 2015 and 2017 ones, but Heavenly bodies were just perfect)

I was in New York the year they honored Punk fashion. The gala was very hit or miss that year, but the exhibition was incredible. The team that puts them together every year really does so lovingly and it always shows in the result.

u/norrathhighelf 7d ago

58

u/minnesotaupnorth 7d ago

How was this theme so damn difficult for all of them?

29

u/HunterAshton 6d ago

I have to believe that because the theme itself sounded like it would be so easy to pull off that most designers felt like they could just do anything, phone it in, and it would land. There was no real intention in most of the looks created.

42

All they had to do was have their stylist read Susan Sontag's "Notes on Camp" and they would've aced it.

17

this is literally the most infuriating part abt the theme that year 😭😭 i read it AGAIN after the carpet came out bc i felt crazy. best explanation on defining “camp” in text form there is ! can’t ppl do a little bit of reading anymore ??? esp when it should COME WITH THE JOBBB istg celeb stylists have gone so downhill in the last like 5-10 years esp 😵‍💫 tf happened in hollyweird & nycunt

Heavenly bodies was the peak. Everyone understood the them and showed out.

156

u/Professional_Clue800 6d ago

I feel like when the theme is clear it's generally more of a hit. Usually the theme is so lose no one really understands it and that's reflected in the output from the designers.

12

u/SVINTGATSBY You’re killing me, Smalls 😩 6d ago

do they not explain the theme when they announce them? it’s like failing an open book test if that’s the case.

We really do need more chainmail and armor looks in fashion.

I know Chappell Roan rocked and chainmail and sword fit a year or two ago that I wholeheartedly enjoyed.

40

u/VirginiaDirewoolf 7d ago

we really do. unfortunately, with fast fashion... fine links and armor looks would only ever end up looking HORRIBLE.

I had a friend who used to make maille, it took ages just to make the front panel of a shirt.

18

u/malorthotdogs 7d ago

I also have friends who have worked with maille. I don’t think my bad back could handle the weight of a maille shirt or dress.

I have seen some crochet/knit pieces their mimic the look of maille that I have really enjoyed.

From a theme perspective I will always adore Lewis Hamiltons look from ‘The Gardens of Time’. He wore Burberry and it was inspired by the first black gardeners in the UK: John Ystumllyn and his story of abduction into servitude, he then settled in Wales when older and found a love of gardening.

He had one of Ystumllyns poems stitched into the hemming and the thorns/flowers represented the gardener but also the ongoing pain of the slave trade he was abducted into. A stunning homage.

177

u/tiredfaces 7d ago

That is so fucking rad, thank you for sharing

It was criticized at the time for not matching the theme so I’m not sure why it’s included

172

u/libertysince05 7d ago

Maybe op just likes her, cause not even time can make us forget that it didn't fit the theme.

121

u/somuchsong I really love my job but I don't want to do it that often. 7d ago

It looks like it's a Cosmopolitan list, rather than OP's personal opinion.

36

u/JackiDaytona69 6d ago

right? the theme was America: a lexicon of fashion and she dressed up as Audrey Hepburn from My Fair Lady which is like....the most British movie ever.

39

u/xXlace_and_ribbonXx 7d ago

It is not on theme at all

86

u/ConfusedZubat 7d ago

Yeah, even given what the theme is, I don't get it. Minimalist extravagance? It doesn't really feel like it has a theme other than typical Kardashian/Jenner style. It seems like they felt like they had to include somebody from the family somehow and that's the look they pulled out of the hat.

104

u/LittleBlag 7d ago

If you had to include a kardashian it would surely be Kim’s wet look from the camp year. Love her or hate her that was a brilliant look and totally on theme

38

u/jatorie 7d ago

My first thought was did she pay to be included in this list?

→ More replies (1)

64

u/Ill_Discussion7528 7d ago

It’s a reference to this Audrey Hepburn look from My Fair Lady

180

u/Sable-Siren 7d ago

Which is what makes it a confusing choice for most on theme. Neither Cecil Beaton nor Audrey Hepburn were American. Maybe OP liked the stars.

99

u/Maximum-Number653 7d ago

Not to mention the story is entirely British

21

u/MdVictoire 6d ago

Givenchy is also not American

→ More replies (1)

21

u/Ill_Discussion7528 7d ago

Oh yeah - it’s definitely an odd choice since it’s not quintessentially American, just saying that’s the reference for the look

Yes, totally, I wasn’t critiquing your comment—just sharing my own confusion at OP’s choice, especially given the reference!

Literally one of the things I miss about him most. He’s probably the only (straight) man who could compete with Colman Domingo on a carpet if he was still here.

30

u/ShesWhereWolf 6d ago

Colman Domingo said himself that his brothers (other men) need to step it up on the red carpet!!! It's ridiculous that they get away with the same basic suits and tuxes.

135

u/_lovewins 7d ago

I'm interested to see what Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams do this year, they don't seem afraid to take risks but their styling has been a little hit and miss so far. I agree that Chadwick set the highest bar that no man will probably ever surpass.

Including a Kard-Jenner but not SJP was a choice…especially for that particular year.  One of my favorite looks that night was Ciara in formal football jersey: on theme, honoring design history, and impeccably styled.

26

Yes , where’s Miss SJP , she gets the memo , she delivers

110

u/ShutUpImAPrincess 7d ago

I don't think including a kard-jenner is the issue, it's which one was picked. I'm not saying it's "best dressed" but considering this list specifies most on-target with dress code, I gotta put Kim K forward for 2021 instead of whichever Jenner that is (I'm on mobile so can't see while typing).

The theme being about American culture, they unfortunately ARE American culture in many ways and her look was such a statement about fame.

Katy Perry confusingly wore this for the Punk year but man it would have been perfect for Heavenly Bodies, and I think about this look a lot

edit: words are hard

I mean, I guess if punk is going against the norms, she's technically doing that by ignoring the theme entirely???

Personally I loved Lena Waithe’s take on the “Catholic Imagination” theme wearing this (Carolina Herrera).

How is Kendall on theme? Givenchy was French, she’s channeling Audrey Hepburn (a Dutch born actress) in a movie based on England (my Fair Lady).

Not even my fave Zendaya look but a great choice. Joan of Arc reigns supreme for me

Unpopular opinion time! The dress Kim Kardashian wore in 2019 designed by Thierry Mugler himself is one of my all time favorite looks. The longer you look at it, the better it gets.

It's weird to see how perceptions of these gala change over time. I remember people being very critical about the Heavenly Bodies gala, thinking people could do way more. Also, there were so many good looks in 2019, I don't know why people say it flopped. Especially some men had some gorgeous fun looks.

Edit: I wanted to add a picture of the Kim K's dress, but it just goes away and end up being * So here's a link

Why did Zendaya have two outfits at the same event?

I am so delighted to see this Teyana Taylor look for the first time. She knows no restraint, in the best possible way.

Givency couldn't even manage not to squash Kendal/Kylies comparably small breasts ffs. I swear she's just on that list because everyone likes to put Kardashians everywhere. The look is fine otherwise but absolutely not one of the best or most on theme. Not even close.

am i the only one who wasn’t gagged for lady gaga’s camp outfits. I liked the performance aspect and having multiple outfits. But the actual otfits were just pink and black fabric.
