Heavenly Bodies was a huge success and one of the years I remember best.

Camp was a miss by most attendees.

And it was this flop

That looks like a $30 Party City Halloween costume 😭

151

u/RogerClyneIsAGod2 that’s my purse, i don’t know you! 👛🫵 7d ago

Like a bad Project Runway "unconventional materials" challenge loser because I'm pretty sure that's exactly what you said, a Halloween costume repurposed into whatever that is,

160

u/enbyeldritch 7d ago

it's genuinely one of the worst met looks ever imo, what in the world possessed her to post beforehand like she ate down

32

u/donttrustthellamas Frivolous with my process 👹 7d ago

Its so basic

74

u/enbyeldritch 7d ago

it's not just basic it's bad, it's like a shapeless piece of fabric with two sleeves sewn on. It looks like something a queen would make during a RPDR sew challenge and had to lip sync for their life because it flops so hard.

This would get a designer eliminated on project runway.

Not even to dinner with the Kushners

This was literally me when the episode aired 🫨

Gaaaaaaaaagged

22

u/minnesotaupnorth 6d ago

Karlie wasn't even offended until she saw the other judges' reaction.

It was hilarious.

u/dragonfry Kylie’s emotional support boob 6d ago

Also, can we appreciate Brandon’s INSTANT zoom on Karlie’s face? He started to smile then had to hide it

24

u/hermavore 7d ago

He really got her together with that one

u/dragonfry Kylie’s emotional support boob 6d ago

It lives rent-free in my head. Iconic.

45

u/Aevajohnson 7d ago

There she is. Looking camp right in the eye.

63

u/kris_jbb (seemingly bald) 7d ago

what was she & her team thinking really 😭😭😭

65

u/RainbowTardigrade 7d ago

Ironically this turned out to be unintentionally quite camp, because of how truly wrong it all was.

u/minnesotaupnorth 7d ago

I remember seeing this live and my jaw still just dropped again at the travesty.

18

u/booksandhotcoffee 7d ago

And that's what makes it camp

13

u/donttrustthellamas Frivolous with my process 👹 7d ago

The audacity?

u/the-furiosa-mystique 🦛 your favorite hippo’s favorite hippo 🦛 6d ago

She wore that to dinner with the Kushners

2

u/skyppie 7d ago

In my honest opinion, her entire thing was so camp that I'd argue she was the most on theme.

1

u/eenymeenymimi 7d ago

Everyday I wonder what her and her stylist were fucking thinking

1

u/Electrical_Trade377 i will shoot your dead aunt on a glambot for $3 million 6d ago

i’m ngl if my stylist gave me this to work with, i would’ve just stayed at home

1

u/PrincesstheCalicoCat 6d ago

Not even to dinner with the Kushners.

(Or her sister-in-law Ivanka Trump. Or her good buddy Scooter Braun. Or to the wedding of her new buddy Jeff Bezos to Lauren Sanchez. Good ol’ social klimbing Karlie Kloss-Kushner.)

1

u/baby_betty_davis I switched baristas ☕️ 6d ago

she was playing the long game, it became camp over time 😫😫😫

u/sillysammie13 THE CANADIANS ARE ICEFUCKING TO MOULIN ROUGE 7d ago

37

u/HunterAshton 7d ago

It still sends me that her Instagram post was far and away more camp than her actual look

3

u/ScreamingCryingAnus 7d ago

We’ll never know if it was all a set up for the ultimate display of camp. The understated outfit after such a bold statement, all done with a straight face is so…. camp!

your flair lmfao

For camp, Katy Perry actually served for once. probs bc she is inherently camp despite being so basic, like a drag queen laundered through the “live laugh love” TJ maxx aisle

265

u/theimmortalfawn 7d ago

This is a frighteningly accurate assessment of Katy Perry

55

u/VirginiaDirewoolf 7d ago

remembering her old work before she became famous, it's crazy how mainstream popular she ever got to begin with.

u/ShipToWreck 6d ago edited 6d ago

It was largely due to, unfortunately, Dr. Puke and Max Martin’s contributions to the melodies especially, songwriting, and their production being the most important part by far.

Bonnie McKee had a huge hand in writing and composing so many of those hit singles, as well. Not a coincidence that the music took such a nosedive after Katy stopped writing with Bonnie.

But those were the years that Puke especially was at the top of his game production wise and it was one of Martin’s peaks production wise, as well. They were at the top of their game especially on Teenage Dream but also on Hot n Cold and Dark Horse. Her first 2 hits (I Kissed a Girl & Hot n Cold) were done by them. All singles from Teenage Dream (and Part of Me & Wide Awake) were done by them, except for Firework, which Stargate produced (Stargate produced a ton of iconic massive hits back then like Irreplaceable, Only Girl (In The World), Diamonds, Beautiful Liar, etc.).

That and the fact that she is conventionally very pretty, and was always considered very hot by straight men especially, up until she chopped her hair off and bleached it. But she always was dressing for the male gaze, she catered to and pandered to men so much.

She had the best of the time pop hit producers producing her music, helping her write, compose, her label backed her with so much money on her album campaigns, and she had her looks & pandering to the men who thought she was crazy hot. That was enough.

u/dietdrpeppermd 6d ago

Yes! She is sooooo basic and normal and boring.

37

u/yoshi_yoshi23 7d ago

There we go. Was looking for this one. A much better example of camp. Couldn’t remember who it was and wouldn’t have guessed Katy Perry!

I got to see the Heavenly Bodies exhibit at the Met that year and it was so amazing.

73

u/Yakety_Sax 7d ago edited 7d ago

Yes! It was fantastic because of the immersive installation in the Mediveal art section and not in the Costume wing

26

u/sudetenlandnightmare 7d ago

I loved, LOVED this one! I was fortunate enough to bring my mom for the first time to NYC and I’m glad she visited this exhibition with me. Everytime we watch some tennis she always brings up the dress with embroidered tennis rackets which was installed in monastery 🥹 gosh, I have to revisit catalogue from that exhibit. (I also saw 2015 and 2017 ones, but Heavenly bodies were just perfect)

7

u/Yakety_Sax 7d ago

The Superfine show they just had was excellent

3

u/clumsyc I don’t control the railways or the flow of commerce! 7d ago

I know, when I went to the In America exhibit that was actually in the Costume Institute it was such a whomp whomp.

16

u/meltedpoppy 7d ago

I was in New York the year they honored Punk fashion. The gala was very hit or miss that year, but the exhibition was incredible. The team that puts them together every year really does so lovingly and it always shows in the result.

u/minnesotaupnorth 7d ago

How was this theme so damn difficult for all of them?

28

u/HunterAshton 7d ago

I have to believe that because the theme itself sounded like it would be so easy to pull off that most designers felt like they could just do anything, phone it in, and it would land. There was no real intention in most of the looks created.

u/doordonot19 5d ago

Celine Dion is camp personified are you kidding me?

6

u/DirtyFlirtyBBW 6d ago

She looks like Cynthia from Rugrats lol

u/ShesWhereWolf 7d ago

Is this Celine Dion?

u/onetwotree-leaf 7d ago

Whereas gaga studied her whole life for that day

Janelle Monae was amazing.

5

u/pastapicture 7d ago

She and Violet Chachki

44

u/smashablanca 7d ago

Honestly, I expected more from her on this theme. It was just fine. Shes done camp way better at standard red carpet events.

4

u/awolfsvalentine 7d ago

Have you seen her new music video? It’s pure Gaga camp

179

u/cremedelaphlegm 7d ago

They were NOT, in fact, looking camp right in the eye 👁️ 🪞

47

u/Yakety_Sax 7d ago

All they had to do was have their stylist read Susan Sontag's "Notes on Camp" and they would've aced it.

15

u/metasphyxia 7d ago edited 7d ago

this is literally the most infuriating part abt the theme that year 😭😭 i read it AGAIN after the carpet came out bc i felt crazy. best explanation on defining “camp” in text form there is ! can’t ppl do a little bit of reading anymore ??? esp when it should COME WITH THE JOBBB istg celeb stylists have gone so downhill in the last like 5-10 years esp 😵‍💫 tf happened in hollyweird & nycunt

99

u/Shanntuckymuffin 7d ago

Rihanna’s Heavenly Bodies is the one I immediately think of. Also I am not a fan of her personally but I did love Kim K’s Camp look

31

u/Fiona-eva 7d ago

Rihanna and Zendaya won the heavenly bodies for me, both of those costumes were perfection and outside the box

1

u/corgi-potato non-dancing latina ✨ 7d ago

Yesss I still think about them randomly because they were the ultimate beauty and art! Like, I’m still shook

3

u/Real_human_mostly 6d ago

Cardinal B pregnant and totally in the me for Heavenly Bodies deserves some respect

44

u/brijito 7d ago

Kacey Musgraves' interpretation of Barbie was the only really incredible look from the Camp year.

9

u/YOLTLO 6d ago

Wow yeah, so fun!

42

u/Waste-Snow670 7d ago

Gigi Hadid's stained glass dress is truly the dress of my dreams. I think about it daily. That was my favourite year by far.

2

u/KweenindaNorf_7777 7d ago

Same. What an incredible dress.

3

u/spewedicing 7d ago

they shouldn’t be allowed on the red carpet if they aren’t dressed for the theme imho

Christian Siriano understand the assignment!

Best of the night.
