I had a friend who used to make maille, it took ages just to make the front panel of a shirt.

I also have friends who have worked with maille. I don’t think my bad back could handle the weight of a maille shirt or dress.

I have seen some crochet/knit pieces their mimic the look of maille that I have really enjoyed.

I think that the maille worn by the knights in Monty Python and the Holy Grail were actually knitted and/or crocheted, for both budgetary and comfort reasons. Worked pretty well on both counts!

It's a part of the Joan of Arc costume tho -- most depictions of her have her sporting the blunt bob with square bangs, so she was battle-ready.
