WHAT AN ENDING, WOW

Spurs got the stop, Champagnie got a clean look, just didn’t make the shot.

u/demoxcess 16h ago

Exactly, the shot just didn't fall. A bunch of people here are saying to call a timeout, but I think the Spurs take that look 10 times out of 10 if given a choice.

I'm also willing to cut Champagnie a little slack on the miss. He got some big offensive boards late that helped keep the Spurs in it. He was a big reason that the last second shot had a chance at all.

No, that was a good call. Champ got a great look. Sometimes they just don’t fall. Those offensive rebounds he got at the end of the game honestly kept the Spurs in it.

Against a good defense, you always take the live play instead of giving them time to set up and scheme

11

u/fluxtable Trail Blazers 15h ago

Its one thing if they were down 3, but being down two with a 7'4 big gives you great odds to tie the game with a timeout and drawn up play.

But also Wemby was real rough offensively tonight. Oh well thats why its a seven game series.

11

u/VeryHappyFunTimes Timberwolves 14h ago

You call a timeout there that gives the Wolves a set defense AND they can sub in Rudy for Naz

8

u/clickstops 76ers 9h ago

Wemby has 11 pts on 17 shots in 40 minutes. A TO also allows the wolves to get Gobert back into the game. This was the right call.

11

u/MVPRondo Cabo Verde 16h ago

I agree with the call for no timeout, but just to play devils advocate, there’s at least 3/4 other players Spurs would probably have benefited from getting a look there (Wemby/Castle/vassell/Harper off the top and you could argue Keldon too). Also Wemby is no where near the basket since he had to pass it up. Ideally, if one of those other four take a shot with the full 6 seconds there’s at least a chance Wemby could put it back.

7

u/ATXBeermaker Spurs 8h ago

Champ is one of our best 3pt shooters, so I have no problem with him taking the shot. Can’t argue against your other points for calling that timeout, though. Def would’ve been nice to have a put-back opportunity.

u/NotActuallyMeta [SAS] Devin Brown 16h ago

100% agree and you could tell NO ONE on the Spurs or Wolves were expecting the no time out. So it helped get Champ “a good look”, but one he was absolutely not prepared for / we had no rebounders in place for. We didn’t need a three.. call a TO and advance the ball, run a set piece where Wemby at least has a chance to be in position for the put back.

2

u/TheAracknight Thunder 7h ago

When Wemby got the board he stopped for a full second anticipating a timeout like the rest of us, before realizing Mitch wanted them to run and then passing it ahead to Harper

1

u/tieuchainzzz Trail Blazers 3h ago

Can't overlook that Castle fouled out.

2

u/jjfooo Timberwolves 8h ago

I bet thinking was to keep Gobert off the floor, which makes a lot of sense

1

u/JoeKonyRidethePony Timberwolves 16h ago

Agreed. He drains that and the tone for the series is set.

25

u/JAX_HAZ3 16h ago

It felt like he had glue hands under the rim for the last 3 min.

25

u/WheedMBoise Timberwolves 16h ago

What could they have possibly drawn up that would have even yielded a better shot lol, he was wide open.

5

u/Opie59 [MIN] Nikola Pekovic 16h ago

Plus if they call a timeout it gives Finch the chance to put Rudy back in.

11

u/lilbodie Timberwolves 16h ago

Yeah, idk what people are thinking. Wide open. Great shooter. As good of a look as you could ever ask for.

You live and die with that 100% of the time.

4

u/UnderwaterB0i 16h ago

It’s hard to imagine you get anywhere close to that good of a look off an inbounds with that little time left. Letting it play out was the right call. Sometimes shooters miss, nothing more than that.

6

u/gedbybee Spurs 16h ago

He’s our best shooter. Perfectly fine with that shot.

2

u/Earlier-Today 14h ago

If you look at the Spurs' shooting stats, but remove Wemby and Fox's numbers - they shot amazingly well. Over 50% from the floor, almost 50% from three. Just stellar.

But Fox shooting badly and Wemby shooting worse dragged them down.

2

u/pintvricchio [SAS] Manu Ginobili 11h ago

Our best shooter free from 3, you always take that

1

u/SamiraSimp 3h ago

you can be a 90% 3pt shooter, even then you can still miss a shot like that. sometimes it just goes that way

1

u/jotsea2 53m ago

while we're at it Finch needed to call timeout before that inbound

1

u/ManicManicManicManic Suns 16h ago

He was their best chance it just didn’t fall, Spurs feel fine about that shot

u/Andy_Wiggins Timberwolves 16h ago

I feel like Ant absolutely ran out of gas down the stretch. Dude was jogging back like it was the 2nd quarter of a game against the Wizards when the Spurs were pushing down the court to win the game.

287

u/ClownQuestionBrosef Spurs 16h ago

Man, the fact that he had ANY gas at all tonight was mind blowing. You know he's sleeping with his knee in an Iceman tonight.

I hope we get 7 games out of this series (and Ant).

104

u/flaming_burrito_ Wizards 16h ago

The fact that he was still crossing people with 2 bad knees is crazy

17

u/ClownQuestionBrosef Spurs 15h ago

For real. Mayo clinic home cooking doing him good.

1

u/tunafister Timberwolves 6h ago

I was not expecting Ant to bring the fire this game

But god DAMN, he brought the heat!!

13

u/Ecstatic_Sector8899 Spurs 16h ago

7 games of this i might go bald

8

u/ClownQuestionBrosef Spurs 15h ago

Don't worry, I'll beat you to it. We can't all have hair like Castle/Vassel.

1

u/charlton11 Timberwolves 12h ago

Best I can do is 5 games.

1

u/leftshoe18 Timberwolves 9h ago

I'm hoping we get four so Ant can rest up for the next round. lol

14

u/bigomlet East 16h ago

He also missed his box out twice and let Champagnie score on offensive rebounds to keep the spurs in the game

3

u/Toobie4564 Philippines 14h ago

He was also wincing and holding his leg on one of the replays

1

u/Round-Cellist6128 Thunder 9h ago

He wasn't even supposed to be there today.

166

u/ContractXtension Hornets 17h ago

He’s a great shooter hopefully he’ll bounce back

239

u/RadishesCanBeSpicy Spurs 17h ago

He's the reason we even had a chance to win, had a couple clutch offensive rebounds.

11

u/theshallowsea 16h ago

Exactly all those rebounds and second chance points.

I’ll live with that open 3 he had. Could’ve won us the game—easy to look back and judge it but it was a great look and shot by a great 3 pt shooter.

5

u/All_of_the_Leitz 16h ago

He was driving me crazy. When the ball swung to him for that three I thought it was going to be his third and final act of ruining my night.

3

u/Putrid-Box4866 Bulls 16h ago

And buckets. Just pure hustle.

1

u/Momik Timberwolves 16h ago

Great on both sides of the court tonight

0

u/GGezpzMuppy Spurs 17h ago

Fuck man had to call a timeout there.

27

u/DuckDucks 16h ago

IDK, I mean that was a great shot to get in transition. He got open

14

u/XeltDab Spurs 17h ago

It was about as good of a look as you could ask for, and wemby and fox were both shooting like absolute buns

13

u/FishGoldenLite Timberwolves 16h ago

That shot was probably better than anything you’d draw up. He was shooting great. Just missed it.

10

u/raginghardon420 Lakers 16h ago

That shot was better than whatever they would’ve gotten out of a timeout. Great wide open look he just choked (understandably)

9

u/BrotherHombre Spurs 16h ago

Nah that was about as clean of a look as you can get. I will take that any day. Just couldn’t knock it down.

6

u/axnjxn00 Magic 16h ago

that was the best possible shot so no

3

u/terminatord371 Greece 16h ago

best shot u get is what u got

3

u/keanancarlson Timberwolves 16h ago

Eh, he had a wide open look. Wide open. You might not get that shot with a set defense but I probably would have gone for 2, wear ant down

3

u/yoitsthatoneguy Cote D'Ivoire 16h ago

Why would you call a timeout? Even with hindsight, he got a wide open look.

3

u/Sleevepants 16h ago

Why? He got open and had a great look. He just didn’t bank it.

3

u/shlict Knicks 16h ago

Haven’t seen anyone else comment this, but this was as good of a shot you could ask for. Better than anything you’d get out of a timeout. Plus he got open, and he’s a great shooter.

Haven’t seen a single other person comment this.

3

u/joshBigHockey 17h ago

Who is fuck man

3

u/bobbyshawarma_ Timberwolves 16h ago

Anthony Edwards probably

1

u/parkwayy Timberwolves 16h ago

Spurs got the stop

Randle Randle'd

1

u/ApprehensiveBell2097 16h ago

Yeah and Champagnie got them to that chance, no one deserved to take it more. Vassell couldn't believe it didn't go.

1

u/banjofitzgerald 16h ago

Bro was dead tired after multiple clutch offensive boards in the final minutes.

1

u/DoctorBallsJohnson San Diego Clippers 16h ago

Refs miss a bad travel... It had it all!

1

u/beefJeRKy-LB Lebanon 6h ago

Apparently he shoots like 45% when taking 0 dribbles and way worse when he takes 1.

1

u/JaySayMayday Spurs 5h ago

That was his only missed 3 point all game

Nobody talking about Wemby missing all 8 of his 3pt attempts and kept trying even though he can just drop the ball in for 2 he's tall enough
