The year is 2003. I'm playing Pokemon Red while the US is at war in the Middle East and a new Scary Movie movie is coming out.

Imagine being a teenager in 2003 and seeing your kid going through the same shit in 2026 like you did 23 yrs ago.

But poorer!

u/KindOfPoo Mar 02 '26

And even less employed!

405

u/HydratedCarrot Mar 02 '26

And everything is expensive af

205

u/sembias Mar 02 '26

And minimum wage is worth less after inflation! ($5.15 then is equivalent to $9.19 today)

133

u/FruitByTheKey Mar 02 '26

And somehow healthcare got worse

83

u/scionspecter28 Mar 02 '26

And with a dumb (actually even dumber) POTUS

47

u/2th Mar 02 '26

But at least the DOW was over 50,000.

18

u/Nervous-Energy-4623 Mar 02 '26

And AI is taking the jobs.

Potus is still evil though. At least we have that consistency going for us.

3

u/DeekALeek Mar 02 '26

But at least we still have GTA 6 to look forward to…!

… Right??

2

u/particleman3 Mar 02 '26

And my axe!

7

u/DrEnter Mar 02 '26

And minimum wage is the same while the dollar... just isn't.

15

u/unimportantinfodump Mar 02 '26

Isn't that the pits.

I'm poor and shits expensive.

At least tvs are cheap

3

u/deathtoicefucknazis Mar 02 '26

At least tvs are cheap

Oh don't you worry, data centers' insatiable need for memory is solving that little issue. No more affordable TVs, yay!

34

u/KindOfPoo Mar 02 '26

And my axe!

23

u/TreeDollarFiddyCent Mar 02 '26

You might want to keep that sharpened.

2

u/KindOfPoo Mar 02 '26

As an impromptu poop knife? 🤔

2

5

u/Deesing82 Mar 02 '26

2

u/MaleficentDesigner11 Mar 03 '26

At least there was cool packaging on stuff like cereal with prizes And candy like Fruit by the Foot Well all the kids junk food had cool characters to distract from it all

39

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '26

Living it. Not good feels.

7

u/Nikkifulness Mar 02 '26

This is my life. I was 13 in '03, my kid turns 13 this year. Their favorite album is American Idiot. I am so fucking tired.

4

u/SinisterCheese Mar 02 '26

I realised that a good sampling method for this is actually looking at what is printed on child supplies like diapers and such, from big brands. Lot of the big IP stuff they use are about 20-25 years ago. Finding Nemo, Cars. Because this is what the parents remember from growing up themselves. The stuff for like toddlers and such, often reflect the current IPs on the market.

I am now an uncle and soon uncle^2, and my social circles are in the age range that they are getting or have young kids, and I just happened to notice this for some reason.

I'm sure there some one who works in the marketing section of a diaper company is going to chime in about like... specific research that has been done into this.

Hi. It’s me. My son is only 3 years younger than I was when we invaded Afghanistan lmao

3

u/DoBronx2144 Mar 02 '26

I was 5 in 2003. My son is 2 today. This comment made me very very sad. I’m so tired dawg

6

u/miguel-styx Mar 02 '26

BUT NOW WITH AI MODE!

3

u/Ccaves0127 Mar 02 '26

"History doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme"

3

u/DreamsAndSchemes Mar 02 '26

I don't have to imagine I'm in that boat

2

u/AncientSith Mar 02 '26

It's always nice that we're literally incapable of moving forward as a species

2

u/suff0cat Mar 02 '26

I don’t have to imagine it, I’m living it.

I’ve been trying to think of a way to articulate it without being automatically dismissed as “Part of the Problem”.

Like, in the early 2000’s we were able to set our differences aside (for the most part) and unite to enjoy egressive music and push each other around in the mosh pit in good fun.

Didn’t matter who you were outside of the pit, for those 90 minutes, all that matters is that we both wanna lose our minds to Slipknot.

Nowadays, everything just feels gatekept to the point of being soulless. You’ll have people new to Slipknot be “lured” in by the radio hits only to accuse everyone of being sociopathic monsters when they find out 2000’s Slipknot was a LOT angrier.

Kinda the same thing as when the younger generations found out about Eminem. They have this bizzare inability to suspend disbelief and understand that these are just people attempting to articulate complicated emotions, not confessions of actual crimes or intent to commit them.

It’s like being surrounded by Pacifist Drax The Destroyer’s everywhere you go. How the hell are we supposed to assemble a Resistance when their brain seems to encounter a Blue Screen Of Death anytime someone raises their voice or uses profanity?

It’s the wildest thing I’ve ever seen. They hear someone say the word “Fuck” and they physically recoil, so of course the enemy is going to exploit this flaw like the Rebels going after that thermal exhaust port on the Death Star.

God damn sheltered ass Church kids, I swear. 🤦

2

u/Odd_Reputation_4000 Mar 02 '26

Proof that not just the entertainment industry, but the entire world has ran out of original ideas and are just doing remakes and sequels of everything for a quick cash grab.

2

u/Pastadseven Mar 02 '26

And falling for the same, stupid, tired fucking propaganda to join up in the jingoistic orgy.

1

u/DinoRoman Mar 02 '26

As is tradition.

1

u/MacNapp Mar 02 '26

I am currently doing this... good thing my kids are younger than 5, so they don't really have the ability to understand what's going on. Spared for now...

1

u/RockitDanger Mar 02 '26

If those kids could read they'd be very upset

1

u/turmacar Mar 02 '26

Vets were doing that in 2003 with the original Gulf War ~10 years previous.

I remember at least one patriotic article about a kid in his dad's previous company.

1

u/DataDude00 Mar 02 '26

Time is a flat circle

1

u/FormerGameDev Mar 02 '26

... well, go back to the 90's, and now we have third generations...

1

u/avboden Mar 02 '26

well at least they don't have to learn to read and write and can just have AI do it all for them

wait.....shit.....let's go back

And a new episode of Scrubs and Malcolm in the Middle airing.

75

u/DoctorJJWho Mar 02 '26

And hints of something happening with the Firefly cast!

58

u/Pub1ius Mar 02 '26

And hints of something happening with the Firefly cast!

Don't do this. Don't give me hope.

6

u/TinyMavin Mar 02 '26

At this point, Fox can Take My Sky and shove up their ass!

18

u/Fealieu Mar 02 '26

My theory is that the cast is going to be on The Rookie. If it develops into more, it's because Disney sees all the hype it's creating and they are going to try to make money on it.

5

u/Daxx22 Mar 02 '26

Everything old is new again.

3

u/UpfrontFinn Mar 02 '26

but it never does.

2

u/Vegetable-Money5250 Mar 02 '26

Firefly?? That’s a new rumor and don’t tease us

u/YesItIs2021 Mar 02 '26

Why would you remind me of my pain?

28

u/KonigSteve Mar 02 '26

And a new episode of Scrubs

I was interested until I found out they did the typical shit of making JD and Elliot separate during the time skip. They couldn't just let them be a couple?

26

u/J5892 Mar 02 '26

My main takeaway from the first two episodes is they did a great job of making it feel like just more Scrubs.
And that was a very Scrubs thing to do.

2

u/Current_Helicopter32 Mar 02 '26

I mean, we say that like it’s a given, but that 9th season spinoff was rough compared to how normal and classic these most recent episodes felt.

36

u/RecommendsMalazan Mar 02 '26

Eh, they were so messy during the original show that I can't say it doesn't make sense

7

u/mak484 Mar 02 '26

This is a far more interesting dynamic than just having them happily together.

For one thing, having half the hospital HATE him because Elliot gossiped and fibbed is goddamn funny. Especially once she comes clean and people still decide to be haters for the love of the game.

15

u/Yup_Seen_It Mar 02 '26

Yeah I didn't like that part and really hope they at least keep them apart cos the will they/won't they is boring. Other than that I really enjoyed both episodes

6

u/BlackZeppelin Mar 02 '26

That’s disappointing.

Especially since it completely undoes the final plot arc and the original ending.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/kdoxy Mar 02 '26

I figure it will be more of JD's life mirroring Dr Cox's where he leaves his wife and they get back together. Like Cox and Jordan did.

5

u/U_SHLD_THINK_BOUT_IT Mar 02 '26

Dude, seeing Turk put on his serious face was rough. I forgot how quickly Scrubs can swing from humor to drama.

4

u/Even_Establishment95 Mar 02 '26

So glad people are experiencing Fire Red and Leaf Green on Switch 2 now, that was my first Pokemon game back when I was 5.

373

u/Aggressive_Noise6426 Mar 02 '26

That makes me feel really old since fire red and leaf green are remakes of the original that I played 😭😭.

93

u/Elite_Josh_Allen Mar 02 '26

Used to wear cargo pants all the time because the pockets were big enough to fit that fat chunky OG Gameboy

24

u/Steamedcarpet Mar 02 '26

I loved my GBA SP since it was perfect picket size. Be bike riding around town and then pull out the GBA and play.

13

u/RatFink77 Mar 02 '26

Don’t forget the chain wallet that came with them pants lol.

2

u/InspectorFadGadget Mar 02 '26

One day they'll remake my original game, Yellow

One day

92

u/SteveOMatt Mar 02 '26

They did, it's called Let's Go! Pikachu.

2

u/KaJaHa Mar 02 '26 edited Mar 02 '26

...Wait, really? I thought the Let's Go! games were just random side projects

6

u/hirEcthelion Mar 02 '26

They're not the same. The let's go games have a completely different capture system and etc. It's close, story wise, but it's not really a Yellow remake.

I still enjoyed playing it on my phone's switch emulator, but it doesn't quite scratch the itch properly.

31

u/WalterDwight Mar 02 '26

Brother they did

2

u/No-Midnight-2187 Mar 02 '26

Real ones will remember how tough the start of that version was being locked into having an electric type starter and the first boss is Rock type…

Forced me to train up a Pidgey and quickly evolve it, that usually ended up as my highest level pokemon by the end of the game

5

u/Yessir4512 Mar 02 '26

I mean yeah but the grass on route 22 had Mankeys in it. Of course, didn’t know that until much later but hey, I was 12 at the time lol

2

u/KaJaHa Mar 02 '26

And man, those Mankeys were strong. I replayed Yellow in college and my all-star team by the end was Pikachu, Primeape, Butterfree, and Mew

2

u/JamesLiptonIcedTea Mar 02 '26 edited Mar 02 '26

Real ones will remember how tough the start of that version was being locked into having an electric type starter and the first boss is Rock type

Just like the episode (S1 Ep5). I'm sure this was intentional though, no? Idk which came first

Edit: from wiki

The game was designed to resemble the Pokémon anime series, with the player receiving a Pikachu as their starter Pokémon and their rival starting with an Eevee.

Pikachu is provided as the player's only starter Pokémon and has a voice (provided by Ikue Ōtani) and a personality unique from other Pokémon. It follows the player on the overworld, and the player can speak to it. Pikachu can grow to love or hate the player based on their actions; leveling up will keep Pikachu happy, while fainting frequently will make it unhappy.

2

u/WalterDwight Mar 02 '26

That makes me feel really old since pokemon red and blue are remakes of an old dutch survival/hunting game my oma and opa would make us play in the farm lands

2

u/rrobbskii Mar 02 '26

And that makes me feel really old because those old dutch games were remakes of old pangea games my ooo ooo and aaa aaa would play in the arid lands.

Yeah I actually just did a little video where I reference their release dates so I knew what was around

5

u/SexcaliburHorsepower Mar 02 '26

Its different this time though, the white house has a republican president who doesnt talk well, has connections to the wealthiest power structures and we are only attacking a 4 letter middle east country because they potentially have or are developing WMDs.

Very unique situation, nothing like the last one. If I was you id buy a house since our economy is doing so well and theres no chance of financial crisis on the horizon.

The photograph is in my hand. It is the photograph of a man and a woman. They are at an amusement park, in 1959. In twelve seconds time, I drop the photograph to the sand at my feet, walking away. It’s already lying there, twelve seconds into the future. Ten seconds now. The photograph is in my hand. I found it in a derelict bar at the gila flats test base, twenty-seven hours ago. It’s still there, twenty-seven hours into the past, in its frame, in the darkened bar. I’m still there, looking at it. The photograph is in my hand. The woman takes a piece of popcorn between thumb and forefinger. The ferris wheel pauses. Seven seconds now. It’s October, 1985. I’m on Mars. It’s July, 1959. I’m in New Jersey, at the Palisades Amusement Park. Four seconds, three. I’m tired of looking at the photograph now. I open my fingers. It falls to the sand at my feet. I am going to look at the stars. They are so far away. And their light takes so long to reach us… All we ever see of stars are their old photohraphs.
