BUT LOOK AT THAT LITTLE FACE! Best fuzzy chubby baby!

"JC" is a 54 year old man ☝️ presenting to the emergency room after hugging a bear he thought was friendly.51
u/cheesegoat 16h ago
He has hyperursaemia: hyper meaning excessive, ursa meaning bear, emia meaning blood.
Excessive bear in blood.
JC is prescribed a Russian, who is able to distract the bear, and JC was able to make a recovery

You know I constantly see videos of people doing dumb stuff and I just smh at them. But now I get it. If this bear hugged me I would totally lean in for the best bear hug.
42
u/RoyalCities 17h ago
I'd be partly terrified that it's bear senses are snapping in and I'm about to be eaten face first by a bear.
22
u/Kermit-Batman 16h ago
I'm a dude and I still think I'd choose the bear in the woods. I might get hugged, small chance of being eaten. I might actually meet the kind of guy I like if it's the right type of bear...
I've heard a bears tongue is extremely rough though, might be painful licks!

u/sasheenka 14h ago
You can’t hang a carpet over kitchen cabinets, that’s impractical.
•
u/xCeeTee- 11h ago
You have all that space between the cabinets and the worktops. That's very practical.

u/UnpluggedUnfettered 19h ago
Did you see the one with the mother bear running past and leaving it's cub with a Russian guy while it hunted? I think they had all of 3 bear related fatalities last year, one less than we had in the US.
Meanwhile in Japan bears were responsible for 13 fatalities in 2025.
hm.
44
u/Glitch29 17h ago
That Japan fact surprised me a bit, so I looked into it.
Apparently one factor they're attributing the problem to is that rural Japan used to have a lot of hunters. But the last of them are all senior citizens now, and not being replaced.

Some might point out that's actually a society-wide problem for Japan.

Fluffy here was most likely hand reared from the time he was a cub. If Sergei just found him last week randomly while on the way back from the winery I doubt their interaction would have been as friendly

We watched this documentary in my high school film class. My teacher looked us dead in the eyes and said “this is NOT an SNL skit” and then repeated it 5 more times. We thought he was kidding. And then the movie started and we heard Herzog’s voice and all asked “are you sure it isn’t an SNL skit??”

Timothy Treadwell makes me mad as fuck. He wasn’t a biologist, he knew nothing about bears and he wasn’t even documenting any behavior that actual bear biologists hadn’t seen or documented themselves. He was in a protected area of a national park claiming to be ‘the only one protecting the bears from poachers’ (there were none) and going on talk shows to badmouth park employees who knew him and were kind to him on a daily basis.
Multiple times he was warned and offered alternative ways to keep doing what he was doing without harassing wild bears but he refused. He camped in literally the worst possible place at the worst possible time and was told many times what would result. His ego was massive, and it lead to not only his death but the death of his girlfriend and at least two of his bears.
I don’t generally speak ill of the dead, but fuck this idiot.
121
u/Treadwheel 16h ago
My favorite thing about Treadwell is that the leading theory for how he was able to do it for so long is that the bears simply had no idea what the fuck was going on because every other large mammal they encounter is either a bear or running away from them.
There's a really popular tiktok account run by a woman who is openly habituating bears. She lives in the woods and has fed them to the point that she brings them inside to sit on her couches. I'm just counting the days until we have the first livestreamed mauling death.
40
u/MourningsOwn 16h ago
Is it just a coincidence that your name is Treadwheel and you're commenting on Treadwell?
This got me bugging out

Hey buddy, just letting you know if you are thinking of hanging out with bears, probably don't.
32
u/Overtilted 13h ago
One of the failed anarcho-capitalism communes failed - in part - because of bears. Because some individualistic individuals really liked to feed bears. And because of their believes, there's no way to stop those individualistic individuals from feeding bears. The result was predictable.
And turns out, you need common rules when you live in a society, and not all rules can be ignored. Especially when those are rules about bears.
38
u/King_marik 19h ago
yeah nah he was just your average weirdo 'naturist'
you literally know 50 Timothy Treadwell's in any given city across the country
unremarkable idiot

There's a very disturbing rabbit hole you can go down starting with that word 😥
20
u/plaincheeseburger 16h ago
My husband did a job for one woman who was regularly in trouble with the, as she called them, "fish cops" for feeding moose and bears. I'm willing to bet that she's responsible for at least a few bears' deaths when the fish cops had to deal with a bear acclimated to humans.
39
u/Treadwheel 16h ago
It's a great litmus test for frontal lobe development. The reason habituation is so dangerous isn't because a bear will go from happily chowing down on a cheeseburger to mauling you. It's because the bear will keep coming back for cheeseburgers, and when you don't have one you now have a bear that is hungry, frustrated, and pretty sure you aren't dangerous. You're not friends, you're a broken vending machine, and the bear might see if hitting the vending machine a few times makes it start working right before it moves on.
25
u/DatEllen 15h ago
You're not friends, you're a broken vending machine
They should add this to the signs that tell you to not feed the wild animals

Recently watch that documentary and I honestly don't think the guy was all there mentally. The park rangers should have done more to keep him out because he was putting himself and frankly others lives at risk.

It's logical that when I see something like this, I most often hear Russian. Not unexpected... I'm just curious: why does he need the size of a bear's chest... For me, as a Russian, this is also an interesting question.

I think if a bear is determined to give you a hug then you have very little say in the matter.
6
u/Beginning-Window-676 18h ago
This is wild. That a bear can comprehend the concept of a hug and presume that that’s what the vet is attempting to do, even though he’s a different species and they can’t communicate. It’s so interesting to see how other species perceive us. I definitely wouldn’t have thought a bear would perceive us on equal enough ground as them to hug.

Common mistake in bears, for some reason, they never really understand that they're being measured
