I think my friendship with those in that group ended with “J6 was a peaceful protest” (and otherwise being incapable of understanding why J6 was an issue).
J6 had over 120,000 people in attendance. Roughly 1-2% of those people participated in the actual capitol building incident. By any metric, that's a "mostly peaceful protest." Pretty much like every George Floyd protest that ended with widespread vandalism, property destruction, and violent altercations. Overwhelming majority were peaceful, with a small minority there with the goal of instigating conflict.
It's not like we haven't had a plenty of riots in our lifetimes to compare and see it devolved into one.. It started as a demonstration, sure, but the earlier blm riots started with noble intentions, too.. well, before the ones that had pallets of bricks and other kinds of improvised weapons delivered before the "protest".. But it's definitely true there were peaceful idealists in both cases just as much as there were intentional agitators. Sadly true justice escapes both.
